Do you think they should just make Scotty English?

Britain is a tiny island anyway so there isn't much of a difference.

Actually theres a huge difference and never let the Scotts especially hear you say that theres no difference between them and the English (or that it doesnt matter)

Britain might be 'tiny' but theres a huge variation of accents within England, Scotland, Wales & Ireland themselves which is generally ignored by American cinema (probably due to the idea that you might not ID a Scouse or Yorkshire accent as English but would the uppercrust posh school one)

Keep Scotty Scottish, they wouldnt have picked Pegg if he couldnt pull off a convincing accent when Paul McGillion didnt get the part and we have seen can do one (and looks more like the old Scotty)

Scotty cannot be English because I've owned an MGB.

Scottsmen are engineers. Englishmen are not.

Joe, sold

How about they add a layer of complexity to Scotty and make him Scot-Irish? Of course, they'd have to change the accent for that too.

The original intent of making him Scottish was that the Scots were once well-famed for their quality shipyards and GR was trying to encompass that to a degree.

True, but it went even further. In an interview with Jimmy Doohan, he stated that HE suggested making the character a Scotsman because of their history of producing the best engineers. Roddenberry left it open for him.

JD would roll over if this were to be changed. It's a silly idea. I can hear it now. Engy "Oh, well, any decent brand of Gin (Gordon's) will do that!"

Hey! I'll have you know that we.....

but with the.....
and of course, our.....

Ummm.....

*coff*

:D

(BTW - The Pegg? Awesome. Keep Scotty Scottish!)

If you say so....I think the many English engineering firms would disagree with you but never mind, personally I think history has shown that Britain as a whole have had some of the finest engineers in history, especially in terms of shipbuilding (which has included both English & Scottish yards for commercial and Navy contracts)

...Superman -- he's not white Euro-American, he's a friggin alien for crying out loud. Any casting of that character could easily fit into the "he's adopted" part of the story.

:brickwall:

Actually, Superman has a certain look which must always be held to, BECAUSE HE'S SUPERMAN.

Superman is white and has raven black hair.

He also has a RED, yellow, and blue costume.

(Are you listening, Brian Singer?)

You change how the character looks, and you've changed him into a different character.

You want someone else? Fine. Go create a new character.

I know what Superman looks like.

We now return you to the Trek BBS.

Actually, neither one of those would bother me a bit. Particularly Superman -- he's not white Euro-American, he's a friggin alien for crying out loud. Any casting -- any casting of that character could easily fit into the "he's adopted" part of the story.

But that is not how he is originally intended to be, plus he is an American icon. Unlike Starbuck in new BSG, everyone practically knows of Superman by birth...

Actually, Superman WAS originally presented as an alien, last survivor from the planet Krypton.

An earlier "superman" that Siegel and Shuster toyed with in a story was a bald Earthman with telepathic powers who took over the world. A villain.

From the very first story, Superman was an alien, with the look we know him to have.

Since this movie is NOT a comedy, why not just make Scotty English? Britain is a tiny island anyway so there isn't much of a difference.
You've clearly been to neither Scotland nor England -- you're still alive.
Scotty is only his nickname because his name is Charles Montgomory SCOTT. I mean, if they changed Kirk's home state from Iowa to somewhere else nobody would care.
You've clearly never been to the TOS Forum -- your ass isn't charcoal.

The original intent of making him Scottish was that the Scots were once well-famed for their quality shipyards and GR was trying to encompass that to a degree.

Welshie failed when he didn't pay up on a bet.

Oh wait...that was WELCHIE. My bad. :D
No, that "joke"... your bad. Again. :p

Well....that strikes me as verging on fetishizing superficial characteristics over content, but we'll just have to agree to disagree. :)

Shatner spoke with a Canadian lilt in TOS and I'm sure Chris Pine won't speak like that (I HOPE NOT ANYWAY.) I think we should be flexible and prepared for accent changes.

First off, Scotty not Scottish?....Um, no. And secondly if not more importantly; If you think they could change Kirk's home state from Iowa and nobody would care, this site would explode in a firey ball of spent bandwidth before I could even type: I told you so.

:rommie:

I hope your on a wind up mate.

For the Brits on here can you imagine MadBaggins being thrown in a room with a Geordie, A Scouser, Someone from Bristol and someone from Glasgow and trying to make head or tail of wait they are saying?

Dean Cain is part Japanese. Birth name: Dean Tanaka.

And you're claiming he looks Asian?

You must have missed this post gastrof. Or you just didn't care, which I just refuse to believe:
You know this would be a fascinating topic, in another forum. ;)
Feel free to start a new topic in the General Sci-Fi forum on Superman.

Also gastrof you need to stop double and triple posting. This has become a habit with you. We have a new multi quote feature, which I have just used, that makes responding to multiple people in one post quite easy. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. :)
