It'll be interesting to see if Picard pulls ahead of Discovery after its second season, because they're very close right now.

The Orville by a country mile.

We can all hope the SNW includes lots of dick humor and a piss corner to compete with such superior sci-if.

Yeah you know the franchise is in trouble when it's being outperformed by Family Guy in Space

Seriously great show though, it feels like I'm watching Star Trek again.

Hey I like The Orville (extremely problematic pheromone episode aside) but its nothing but comfort food nostalgia.

Remember "The Cage"?
Remember when Data had to fight in court for his rights?
Remember when Worf would have clashes between Starfleet life and Klingon stuff?
Remember holodeck episodes?
Remember shuttle crash episodes?
Remember "Best of Both Worlds"?

It's "what Star Trek epsiode are they doing this week", where with Picard they take old characters and put them in new situations.

Is it though? 2 seasons on Fox and probably a final season on Hulu.

Do you really want to turn this into a peepee measuring contest? The Orville consistently rates higher than STD, and it's audience score on the rotten tomato website - the one set by people who watch the shows, not the paid opinion writers - is also way higher.

And tbh it's not hard to see why. The show is amazing. I'm surprised there's no forum for it here - I guess the 'other sci fic' forum is the place to go to talk about Orville?

Yeah, and you know, we've had these themes explored in TNG, in DS9, in VOY, in ENT .. each Trek series puts its own spin on the same old stories. That doesn't make them any lesser for it. There's only so many things you can do in space (apparently)

I do like how they've fixed up some of Trek's low hanging fruit - less technobabble, science that doesn't not make as much sense, wormholes that look like wormholes .. crew members needing to relieve themselves from time to time .. officers who are people, not automatons ..

Prob not a popular opinion in this place, but I heart The Orville. Trek lost its soul years ago, Seth MacFarlane found it.

If I'm ranking CBS Trek to date...

1) Lower Decks
2) Picard
3) Prodigy
4) Short Treks
5) Discovery

I think Lower Decks brought sheer fun and adventure back to Trek, and that is one of the things I've always enjoyed in the franchise. On the other end, I just don't find Discovery or its style of storytelling engaging.

Funny, because I find the Orville a poor substitute. It's characters uneven and inappropriate. Themes go deep then shallow. It feels so inconsistent.
