Will Sam Beckett Return Home? NBC Orders Quantum Leap Reboot Pilot

If they want to stick with the rules of this universe then they have to cast someone older. It's only possible to leap within your own lifetime so if they go with a twentysomething, then they won't be able to have any episodes set earlier than the mid-90s.
Or just change the rules, you can do that with fiction, with the exception of religious dogma. ;)

Of course Sam did travel back to the Civil War era in one episode and in the shot but unbroadcast ending to the final episode he wound up in the future,

^ I always wondered why Sam would ever leap into the future. What can he possibly do in the future that he can't do in the present?

And (I noticed this in the original article) I wish they'd stop saying that Sam leaps into other people's bodies. It seems obvious he doesn't do that. Otherwise, why could he still see when he leaped into the blind concert pianist; why could he still walk when he leaped into a guy with no legs; and how could he have fathered a daughter if it's somebody else's body? ;)

What I always wondered is how come the clothes he's wearing still fit. I'm guessing not everyone who's place he takes is the same height and build so shouldn't they get baggy or tight when Sam arrives?

Bellisario always talked about the main character in a continuation being Sam's daughter.

But yeah, I don't see how you do the series in the world we live in today. If you have the Leaper taking the place of someone of a different race, colour, gender or orientation you'll get complaints. Then again, if they only leap into people the same as them you'll get other people complaining about the lack of representation. It's a no-win situation.

Twitter will complain but I say who cares. It's not even like he leaps into the people. The leaper is always who they always are. People just see someone else. I think they should go with 2 leapers. Sam's daughter and a soldier type who is their to protect her. The Hologram is Ziggy. Who I would cast is Rhea Seehorn as Sam's daughter, Bill Burr as the soldier and Ziggy would be a different actor each week though she would have a thing for female comics.

Dramatic license.

Bill Burr as the soldier

Now THAT I'd like to see. :guffaw:

I think this could have a lot of potential.
I would hope that they will still have the Leaper jump into other sexes/races/ect. to me a big part of the show was when Sam would have to adjust to being in someone different from him. They would definitely have to handle it very carefully though.

Sam Beckett leap forward into a man that became the Starfleet captain on Earth's first deep space exploration starship with a warp five engine. It is uncertain if he ever leap out of that man, or if he did so at the foundation of the United Federation of Planets.

I suppose if Sam can leap into an ancestor, it is also possible that he can leap into a descendant.

I mean, Archer's middle name IS Beckett... :shifty:

A couple of things:
The final episode of the original ("Mirror Image") had Sam change Al's history. For all we know, this gave Al his happy ending, his family, and he never joined Project Quantum Leap. If so, that would be a nice way of explaining the absence of Stockwell - Sam remembers the events of the original show, but they now happened differently due to the lack of Al in his life.

Sammy Jo Fuller, Sam's daughter, was born in 1967, so she'd be in her mid 50s by 2022. Would NBC be willing to have the lead character be someone that age?

I've always assumed that Sam's changing of history is the difference between 1995-2000 as we saw on the show and how the real world turned out.

They renewed La Brea.

If she's not the lead, she could always be the new Al.

I was wondering about the same thing. I can kinda see them having there be a team of people they send back--maybe with Sam's middle-aged daughter as the authority figure back in the present--partly to avoid issues like that. But that would probably require targeted leaps rather than randomly leaping about like in the original show; not sure how I'd like that.

From the article:
...Quantum Leap is one of the marquee titles in the Universal TV library whose reboot has been a priority for years and has been attempted multiple times to date...

For fans of the original series who want to see a continuation, I hope they get something that they like. However, given the history of the various attempts oh, who knows if this will ever make it to a TV or or PC / phone streaming screen?

How many times have they announced an attempted reboot of Battlestar Galactica at NBC/Universal over the last decade that have ultimately stalled or hit a dead end?

Later in the article that stated that even Scott Bakula says the rights situation has been a mess, and he's not even sure whether that situation has been sorted out for this reboot attempt.

Again I really do hope Quantum Leap fans get something they like, but at this point it doesn't seem like it's a very sure thing to even get this pilot completed.

I loved Quantum Leap but its not a series i have ever really yearned for it to come back, in any way.

I felt it was wrapped up well and no further stories are needed, definitely not a reboot.

Sam remembers the events of the original show, but they now happened differently due to the lack of Al in his life.

Which would seem to be a paradox, given that so many of Sam's leaps depended directly on Al's assistance.

And besides, who's to say that Sam and Al didn't still know each other in the new timeline? Sure, Al now has the family that he never had before, but this doesn't have to mean he wasn't a part of Project Quantum Leap anyway. For all we know, Sam's leaps could have gone down very much the same, and still with Al.

Let's be honest about the "travel within his own lifetime" thing. It was only ever there to keep the show's budget under control so they were only ever doing recent period stuff, with is a lot cheaper to pull off than say, leaping into early an Byzantium scholar, or a guard in the court of Emperor Xian, or into a Cro-Magnon tribal chief.
So it'd be pretty easy to handwave it in a new show and expand the possibilities. But if one REALLY needs to be weirdly finicky about it; just use the civil war/DNA precedent, plus some 30 years of advancement in Ziggy's hardware, and say because the protagonist is Sam's descendent, they can leap into any time period where he's been before (feeding into the notion that, at least initially, it's a search and rescue mission.) Which by this point, once the anthropomorphic personification of time and justice got involved (or who/whatever that was behind the bar) probably encompasses all of human history.

Eh. Daughter. Granddaughter. Same difference from a narrative standpoint. I mean in either case she would have grown up not knowing Sam personally, so it makes little difference to any motivations she might have.
I've always assumed that Sam's changing of history is the difference between 1995-2000 as we saw on the show and how the real world turned out.
I think the JFK/Oswald episodes proved that Sam's original timeline is significantly different that ours, given that in his world, Jackie Kennedy never made it out of Dealey Plaza alive.
