What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

Archer growling at Sim that he'll kill him to save Trip and wouldn't hesitate to do so was both one of Archer's greatest moments and one of his worst. Xindi Mission Archer could be an incredible asshole but he had reasons for his awful behavior.

In the end Sim gave his life, Tuvix was begging for mercy right to the bitter end. I see your point though.

Actually, Tuvix calmed down, resigned himself to his fate, and even forgave Janeway and the crew for their betrayal. Whether you consider it death, cessation of existence, or just transitioning to a different form of life, he met it with dignity.

I wish they could have brought Tuvix back, maybe in an AU episode where Janeway made different choices. Janeway could reveal that a part of her regretted her decision, and Tuvix could reassure her that he understood, and his counterpart would have as well. Would have been a nice bit of closure.

It would've been worth it just to have a scene with Janeway, Tuvok, Neelix and Tuvix in it at the same time. Actually it would've been worth it just to have more Tuvix on screen, the guy was great.

I haven't seen Tuvix since about 2008, but you guys are making me want to watch it. I actually really like Voyager as a dip in and out show.

Maybe controversial is that Voyager is maybe my preferred Trek for a lazy afternoon. I'm very familiar with TNG and TOS which I've rewatched a lot, but there's very few episodes that I've watched twice.

Recently though I've just been sort of watching an episode (still on Netflix here!) as it comes up in discussion here and finding really fun. Put your feet up Trek. No consequences Trek. Sometimes there's nothing wrong with that and I like the characters. Overall I prefer them to their counterparts from TNG. TNG had a Klingon. Voyager had a Borg. :D

Tuvok is always worth the money. Likewise Robert Picardo, plus the electrifying because of real tension Jeri Ryan/Seven and Kate Mulgrew/Janeway dynamic...

Comfort Trek. Wish it'd get a remaster. Controversial opinion: Ahead of Deep Space Nine

Yeah I like to put on an episode of Voyager to help pass the time while I'm cleaning the house or something.

I've been spot-rewatching it and it's really quite entertaining from a "comfort food" perspective. I think (controversial opinion perhaps??) VOY would have played much better with fans if TNG and DS9 had never happened, because evaluating it on its own...it's a nice little sci-fi show.

I agree. It's a fun show to just "watch." It's not overly engaging or anything I particularly care passionately about...but it's also just "fun" and comforting to get lost in for 45 min.

It's basically how I feel about The Orville and Lower Decks (although I like VOY better than either of them).

Especially the early episodes... while most of the characters didn't evolve all that much, the early seasons had a few extra things going for them:
The Doc is a little more a computer program, rather than just a rather temperamental human who just happened to be made of photons.
Kes is still around, wearing modest clothing. While I like Seven as well, I find the over-sexualization of her character to be irritating.
There's still hints of romantic tension between Janeway and Chakotay. I thought they were a cute couple.
And Harry's rank still makes sense.

I'm hoping that this is not viewed insensitively, but other than the form-fitting (admittedly ridiculous) outfit that Jeri Ryan wore, I never really found the character to be "over-sexualized." In fact, she seems to be rather the opposite (meaning, she gets a ton of development, lines, arcs, etc that have absolutely nothing to do with sexualization or the fact that the actress is considered attractive). I actually think Troi was much more sexualized than Seven.

My big complaint about Seven is that the show seemed to focus TOO heavily on her as a character after her introduction at the expense of the other characters. But, I never felt she was out there just as eye candy (despite her outfit). She is one of the more fascinating and fully-developed characters on the show.

In fact, in my head canon, I always figured that her tighter-fitting attire is due to her years and years of being in those Borg outfits that were rather restrictive.

The fact that VOY brought Janeway, Seven, and the Doctor to the front of the bus (while shoving Kes off it, Chakotay to the back of it, and Harry under it) was nothing new. TOS and TNG also tightened focus on some characters and neglected others. But those form fitting jumpsuits Seven had on could be hard to ignore. And after Troi, Crusher, Dax, Kira, Janeway, and Torres were seen in standard uniform, it felt like a step backward.

Kira’s was pretty darn form fitting. Not as much as her MU counterpart, but still very form fitting.
Her initial two-piece uniform at the beginning of the series wasn't so form-fitting, but the one-piece jumpsuit that replaced it was more so.

Yeah, I'm not saying it was ideal. I'm just saying I would hesitate to classify the treatment of the character as "overly-sexualized" when I don't think, from a relative stand point, that is necessarily true.

This might be controversial. DS9 Season 3 and ENT Season 3 are the best Season 3s of all the Trek series thus far.

DS9 Season 3 gave us "Past Tense, Parts I and II." That alone makes me forgive it for "Meridian" and then some.

Hmmm....that's a tough one for me.

I do like both of those seasons...BUT....

  • I have a personal (controversial some might even say) affinity for TOS S3. I even like it more than S2.
  • I think TNG S3 is pretty masterful, and may be the best season of the entire series run.

My controversial S3 ranking:
  1. Next Generation
  2. Deep Space Nine
  3. Discovery
  4. Enterprise
  5. Voyager
  6. Original Series
TNG, DS9 and Voyager are all inconsistent with real highlights, but Voyager has fewer of them. Disco is more consistent but less impressive. Enterprise alternates between stretches of dull episodes and decent ones. The Original Series' third season is... what it is.

And even TOS Season 3 has "The Enterprise Incident," "The Tholian Web" and "Requiem for Methuselah." There is some real outstanding writing in the final year even if we had to put up with dreck like "And the Children Shall Lead" and "The Mark of Gideon."

It's very much the whiplash season. A few episodes can hold their metaphorical heads high, but there's an awful lot of dross, and surprisingly little middle ground.
