News Foundation Adaptation Series Officially Ordered by Apple

Well… yeah. That’s usually what they do. :)
The emperor’s for example here
I suppose that's The Crown effect - three different actresses to play E2R at different stages in her life. As far as I can tell,
cloning in this series is limited to the Cleons.

You know that situation actually exists with trees, Pando is a small forest of trees who are all clones of each other. It's truly amazing. All clones at different stages of growth.

Is this a spoiler thread or is there going to be about one? I'm only 8 minutes into the episode and am already a little "What?" but don't want to put it here if it's the wrong placr
I am going to have to try again when I can devote 100% attention........I tried to multitask and was quickly lost. :-)

If there are enough members willing, we probably could do with a spoiler thread. However, someone more charismatic than I am would need to start it.

@wayoung: They had better not compress the timeline too much or they won't have anything left for the second season (if there's one).:D

according to the wiki entry the producers envision telling the story over 8 season of 10 episodes though accept that might not happen.

so never mind saving stuff for the 2nd what about 3 thru 8? :)

I have no problem envisioning them drawing each crises out over the course of a season or so. Which is why I was so surprised at the route they are taking. Even if Gaal is narrating from 50 or 75 years in the future, they're still compressing a 300+ year timeline into a single lifespan.

I'm not sure about there being compression if there is a way to preserve characters through cloning, suspended animation, or stasis fields. In the book series, the crises and their dates are:
  1. (Foundation)
50 FE Salvor Hardin non-violently overthrows the planetary government on Terminus and makes the nearby systems dependent on Foundation technology.
  2. (Foundation)
70 FE Salvor Hardin uses religious leverage against Anacreon to force them to back down.
  3. (Foundation)
150 FE Hober Mallow defeats Korell by economic embargo of Foundation technology.
  4. (Foundation and Empire)
200 FE General Bel Riose is defeated by him becoming too powerful for the emperor to trust.
  5. (Foundation and Empire)
300 FE War between the Foundation and the Independent Association of Traders - this does not happen due to the appearance of the Mule, which derails the Seldon plan and forces the hand of the Second Foundation.
  6. Not described. Not a Seldon crisis?
  7. Not described. Not a Seldon crisis?
  8. (Foundation's Edge)
500 FE The Second Foundation reveals it is still operating as Seldon's message, back on track, precisely describes the existing crisis regarding the proposed relocation of the Foundation to nearer the centre of the Galaxy.

Cloning doesn't impact the timeline because they've made it clear they don't transplant memories, each clone needs to be re-educated. So if the narrator is a future Gaal clone she couldn't be narrating events that "she" remembers.

I guess suspended animation is possible instead of compression, but since the cast is the same for each episode I don't believe that's happening, and it would be a weird change if Gaal is frozen and woken up for each crises. But I guess not impossible. The kids did say they saw a ghost:shrug:

We don't know yet if memory transfer technology is available to people other than the Cleons - such as robots and the Second Foundation. What was Rayth fiddling with near Hari Seldon's ear? Are Seldon's memories going to be uploaded into an alpha-level simulation of him?

Fair enough. Can't disprove it exists, but the only examples we've been shown so far don't have it.

There's a detail that kinda annoys me. It seems the writers can't count (something they have in common with the writers of Star Trek):

In episode 1 they say that the jumpless trip to Terminus (50,000 light-years) will take 888 days (more or less) but in the Asimovian universe, they only have (slow) sublight or the jump (which is instantaneous). So how the hell does it work?

Second in episode 2 Gaal says that the trip will take 4 years and 4 months!!! But then a little later in the episode Raych says that it will take 54 months!!

How about they make up their freaking mind!

A science-fiction story written by a scientist and then adapted by people who can't even count!!!

Plus traveling at sublight speed over long distances is just nonsense!

4 years, 4 months is 52 months which in't that much quicker than 54 months over 50,000 light years and 2) people talk in estimates of time taken all the time and it always varies from person to person.

and it's not sublight travel to terminus, it would be FTL but simply not as quick as the jump drive.

The vehicle doesn't appear to be travelling particularly fast in relation to other objects such as the asteroids so I chose to ignore the apparently contradictory times given and went with the flow. What I found amusing was Gaal generating primes mentally in the pool and somehow ending up with an even number, not immediately realising it wasn't prime (the only even prime number is 2), and then somehow magically knowing something was wrong with Raych and Hari.

Maybe they're traveling at different relativistic speeds and referring to the different time-dilated shipboard times that would result.

If so then 50, 000 years would have elapsed on the planets by the time they reach Terminus. The Empire would have been reborn by then (even with the 30, 000 years of barbarism)...

There's no such thing in the Asimovian universe. It's either sublight or the jump.

I've read every novel, every story, he's written.

Looks like a severe case of OCD, IMO.

I handwaved it as being different levels of hyperspace or warp versus slipstream or something. Yeah, two FTL modes are not in the original but, surprising myself, I wasn't bothered.

I believe the longest known prime has nearly 25 million digits (I might be out of date). Her list isn't exactly pushing the boat out.
