Nero wins by a landslide. He managed to not only enact his revenge against Vulcan, but have two Spocks watch it. It wasn't his complete plan, but pretty sure no other Romulan had anywhere near his level of success.

Valid points. Too bad he lost everything in the first place--his planet, his family, his universe, his hair, his dignity, his marbles...

However he also unwittingly may just have saved Romulans in the Kelvinverse by announcing the nova of Romulus' star in a century or so. Plenty of time to relocate the population. Prime Spock probably got the ball rolling on that one despite his grief.

Depends on if the Nova was a natural phenomenon or not.

...Obviously it was ignited by Prime Spock, who at the conclusion of "Unification II" had realized that diplomacy would never unify the two Vulcanoid peoples. "Unification III" merely demonstrates what unqualified success his next move was.

The problem here is ‘iconic’ AND ‘villain’. I’m not sure even Khan fits the bill (as a human villain). Nero is a candidate, but is he an iconic character? Not outside the fandom he’s not.

And a matter of scope. "Outside the fandom", few would recognize the concept of "Romulan" to begin with...

Two of my choices were in the Other category, even though I just realized Vreenek is dead. Maybe Koval from Inter Arma Enim Silit Leges.

My other choices were the Romulan Commander from The Enterprise Incident and Tomalak.

Can you name any characters listed that do not appear in "Star Trek?"

I’m asking if we’re looking for characters who are iconic in the strongest possible sense of the word, so ideally not just within the core Star Trek fandom. “I’m more of a sci-fi fan in general, but sure, I know who the Romulans are, and there was that Romulan commander portrayed by the actor who also plays Spock’s father. Oh, yes, and Tasha’s daughter on The Next Generation.” If we expand the scope to the world, then most people won’t even know about Romulans.

It's based on your own judgement. Nero may be "iconic" to some and not to others.

Ok, then I don’t think Star Trek has any iconic Romulan villains unless we narrow down the scope to sci-fi fandom, in which case you’d have (in order of decreasing villainy) Nero, Sela… and I guess that guy from Star Trek VI, whatshisname (solution: Nanclus).

Unnamed Romulan Commander in TOS, Tomalak and Sela are the most iconic to me.

Unnamed Romulan commander introduced everyone to Romulans.

Sela is memorable due to the ties to Tasha Yar and to the House of Duras

Tomalak is shown to be Picard’s equal and could get one over him without firing a shot.

As for the others...

Nero I don’t really consider a villain. Antagonist yes, villain, no.

Valdore is not iconic and should not be considered so, until we see more of him during the Earth-Romulan War. Within ENT, Talok was the more iconic Romulan in the series simply due the reveal at the end of the Vulcan arc.

Nanclus despite being a part of the conspiracy in TUC, is also the most forgettable conspirator.

Narissa felt more of an iconic villain to me than Narek and Oh within PIC.

Trelane, honestly, I can’t take a list seriously that includes Nanclus yet doesn’t the Commander from “The Enterprise Incident.” NO ONE cares about the non-entity that was Nanclus.

She (Charvanak), Toreth, Vreenak, Koval, Pardek, Narissa, no doubt others, are far better foils than Nanclus and the Other category.

Take some user feedback and tweak the list. It’s the, uh, “mature” thing to do…Trelane.

Or don’t and endure a subpar thread. No doubt someone will start another one later that will inspire more ardent consideration and be remembered more fondly.

Jolan tru.

Nero? Not a villain? We misunderstood him, you think?

You overreact. I can see this is really important to you though, so I went ahead and added unnamed Romulan commander (from the Enterprise incident).

If you feel it is necessary to create a new poll minus Nanclus, by all means create a dueling thread. It's the "mature" thing to do?

I ca..

Nope, not even I can care about him. If it were not deleted scenes his presence could be hardly felt.

You overact.
It's a damn shame when a good thread goes bad.

Not this day, Squire. Honestly, though, the issue isn't Nanclus so much -- conspiring to assassinate a head of state or two is sufficiently villainous -- but that his part in the movie is so minor that he's a glorified extra. It's more that so many other far more delicious baddies weren't included.

And let's be real, most all Romulans are baddies of one form or another. Cretak nearly staged the Romulan invasion of Bajor if not for Ross. Let the pointed ears be plentiful and the vote be a good one.

For my money, Vreenak, Toreth, and maybe Mendak were better baddies. Charvanak, with her miniskirt and doomed from the start temptress schtick, though interesting, isn't as baddass. And so my vote remains Romulan Commander from BoT, Tomalak, and Other.
