DC Comics Ongoing Discussion

Didn't Rebirth just kind of make minor tweaks rather than being a full reboot like Infinite Crisis or the New 52?
The WW 80th Anniversary special could be good, I'll wait and see who is writing stories for it.

None of the rest of the solicits really interest me, especially the Black Label stuff (since Black Label Batman showed his Bat dong, I'm a bit worried about a Black Label WW book).
Historia is the one thing I'm most interested in coming up from DC. I loved KSD's first run on Captain Marvel, and I can't wait to see what she's does with Diana and the Amazons. I own but haven't read the first collections of The Pretty Deadly and Bitch Planet, so I'm not sure how her adult oriented stuff compares to her more traditional superhero stuff, but I can't see there being much of a difference in quality just because she can swear and show naked people. If anything that kind of freedom tends to make most writers better.

I am really liking the limited series format the DC has introduced. I would love to see characters like Ryan Choi's Atom or Black Lightning, or even just four to six issues of Hawkman a year--those characters who have never been able to sustain their on ongoing series for very long.

I thought Black Lightning got a miniseries some time in the last year or two?

There was a prestige series released, The Other History of the DC Universe but he was just one story I think. Not sure about anything else.

Thanks for the list. I'll probably be skipping it then, since its all writers I either just don't care for or actively can't stand. Its really weird that Gail Simone and/or Greg Rucka aren't involved, they were the names I was hoping for and probably would have sold me on the book.

I prefer writers to have limits. Gail Simone, for example, is one of my favorite comic writers, but her work goes down the drain when she doesn't have at least a Teen/PG-13 equivalent age rating on a book (with Clean Room and Crosswind specifically being absolutely horrible comics from the bits I saw). Nudity is never excusable in any form of media to me me, but especially not in comics involving characters from the big 2 companies. I accepted the brief nudity in Sandman, but it was definitely not sexual and there was no nudity involving DC heroes or villains, it was just Despair and one or two brief panels (all of which could have been edited and not effected the story at all).

As for KSD, I found her Captain Marvel run generally forgettable, so even if the comic wasn't Black Label I wouldn't be particularly interested.

Last series I see is from 2018.

Black Lightning was a prominent co-star of "Batman & the Outsiders", which ended in December. But, yeah, last solo series was in 2018, last solo issue was Other History #1.

Has anybody been following Titans Academy. I was going to start buying it back in May but by that time my comic shop was sold out.

Yes, been reading it. It's alright, has some potential in characters and concepts, but it's still young, and there are lots of characters with their own arcs to set up. The early crossover with Suicide Squad in #3 was better than I expected.

PMFJI, but I've been out of the loop for awhile and I just have one question...does DC still do those massive reality-altering crisis events like every three or four years?

I mean, call me crazy - and many have :p - but I just think it's kind of ridiculous. Crisis on Infinite Earths was great, probably my favorite comic storyline of all time, but then they started doing it ALL.THE.FUCKING.TIME. Zero Hour, Infinite Crisis, Final Crisis, 52, New 52, Convergence, Flashpoint, Rebirth...every so often they just throw up their hands and start over for no readily apparent reason.

And don't even get me started on Hypertime.

Does DC still do that? Or have they calmed down?

Let's see:
Crisis on Infinite Earths: 1985 - 1986
Zero Hour: 1994
Infinite Crisis: 2005 -2006
Final Crisis: 2008
Flashpoint: 2011
Convergence: 2015
Rebirth: 2016
Dark Nights Metal: 2017 - 2018
Doomsday Clock: 2017 - 2019
Dark Nights Death Metal: 2020 - 2021

Is Superman #32 the last one of the run, to be permanently replaced by this “Son of Kal-El” title?

"Permanently" is relative. The new series is an "ongoing" but it has already been stated that this is all part of the next multiyear arc--so expect Superman with Clark to return in a couple of years.

With a new “Issue #1” no doubt.

Doesn't DC put both a run number and a legacy number on some of their books? Or is that Marvel?

One of the things that sticks in my head is how they are going to have to deal with Darkseid. I would not risk a goddess of light/life..not on Earth Omega. Is Mr. Bones really that character? Speaking of Marvel, an outside character like Slapstick might be the ticket. The last time Darkseid was humiliated was during the Emperor Joker deal…something ridiculous…that might be best

November (and early December, I guess) solicits are out, and if you look carefully, they actually do publish a couple of books that don't feature Batman.

- Another Batman Black Label mini-series, this time written and drawn by Jock. Sounds alright, and Jock is a good artist (though I can't say I ever read something he's written), but if I get this at all, it'll be the collected edition.
- Two other new Robin-centric Bat-minis, Robins by Tim Seeley & Baldemar Rivas, and Robin & Batman by Jeff Lemire & Dustin Nguyen. Not picking up either of those.
- Aside from Bat-books, the other DC thing that actually sells are those Anniversary specials, so no wonder they are doing a Gotham City Anniversary Giant, because apparently all Bat-villains appeared the same year. Well, still gonna pick this up, if only out of curiosity over a Penguin story co-written by Danny DeVito.
- Dark Knights of Steel, new Elseworld maxi-series featuring a medieval fantasy version of the DCU, by Tom Taylor (oh, that guy) & Yasmine Putri. Sounds more interesting than the constant Evil Superman or Monster-DC-mashups of other Elseworlds of the past few years. Might actually get this. Though I'd really like a reprint/continuation of the DC Primeval tie-in comics of Funko's Barbarian Fantasy mash-up that Marv Wolfman wrote for some Walmart-exclusives a few years ago.
- Justice League Incarnate, 5-issue sequel to the Infinite Frontier mini. Yup, this is a definitive buy for me.
- Wonder Woman: Evolution, 8-issue mini by Stephanie Phillips & Mike Hawthorne sending Diana to space. Probable buy.
- The obligatory holiday anthology special. Just like last year, one story by Paul Dini is not enough for me to pay ten bucks for this.
- Batman/Superman: Authority Special, guess this is obligatory for following the current Super-books? Well, not that hurtful, at six bucks for 48 pages.
- Whole bunch of annuals remind me why I don't follow the Bat-books anymore. But there are also annuals for Wonder Woman, JL Dark (because back-up features still get their own annuals, now, not that I complain), and Superman: Son of Kal-El, which I'm all gonna get.
- Batman: Reptilian concludes with #6. Which is odd, I thought that was an eight-issue series. Batman: The Adventure Continues finishes its second season with #7, and Batman: The Detective ends with #6. Also, co-starring Batman, Checkmate ends with #6.
- FIrst season of the relaunched Static also concludes with #6, as does Wonder Woman: Black & Gold.

There are a lot of Batmen titles these days for sure!

This looks like a lot of comics for me as I will be buying a couple of annuals and the Authority special. Checkmate and Batman The Detective are both ending. That means December will be a lighter month. I made the mistake of starting to read the blurb for JL Incarnate which gives away Infiinte Frontier's ending a little bit.

There are no new series this month, limited or ongoing, that interest me so I continue to await the return of a Justice Society ongoing and the LSH.
