What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

I’m trying to help you.

But you have to want to help yourself first.

;)
Star Trek The Motion Picture is a better movie than at least half of the Trek films... including at least one other TOS movie, at least three of the four TNG movies (if not all four), and at least two of the Kelvin Trek movies. A smarter and more engaging movie than all those films.

Minimum of 7th place out of thirteen films ain't exactly great, but it ain't at all bad.

I think what makes the episode great is the brilliant way the Clown was played. (At least, I thought it was). It's one of those figures I'd really not want to meet in a nightmare.

Michael McKean is brilliant at slightly unsettling yet somehow still happy-looking characters. The guy imbues both silliness and menace at the same time.

I rank TMP dead last. A dreary, dismal, boring effort.

YMMV
Dreary, dismal and boring all describe Star Trek Nemesis much better than TMP. Not to mention lifeless and tone-deaf.

(Right, there's no colon in ST Nemesis? Ooh look! He's not just a nemesis, he's a Star Trek Nemesis! Ooooooooooh!)

Having said that, I love all the rest of TOS movies (2-6). They all bring me joy in their own way.

So in my book, TOS is 5-1, movie-wise.

In fact I like the last five movies as a whole better than the TV series.

So there’s that.

My ranking (the ones in the middle may vary depending on mood, and I at least like all but the bottom three):
Wrath of Khan
Voyage Home
First Contact
Undiscovered Country
Galaxy Quest if you include that
Beyond
Search for Spock
Motion Picture
Final Frontier
2009
Generations (I don't hate it because I read the Shatnerverse novels and don't consider this Kirks death)
Insurrection
Into Darkness
Nemesis

So 7th of the official Trek movies for me (at least these days): quite respectable.

TFF isn't great but it's a Helluva lot better than its reputation portrays it. It's escapism with a heavy message but sloppy execution.

Shatner, Harve Bennett and David Loughery at least tried to do something big. I can't say that about a couple of the other movies.

I don't think the Borg Queen was a bad addition to the Borg, at least in First Contact and even mostly throughout Voyager, having a particular antagonist was probably necessary.

Seven of Nine advanced into humanity/individuality in Voyager Season 4 just a bit too quickly and easily and most of that was the writing but part of it was Jeri Ryan, she was a fine actress but I think not a great one (she did get better over time though the writing pretty much remained the same or got just a bit better).

I think "Justice" and "Angel One" are OK, don't see what's so bad about them.

I think the Borg Queen was a terrible addition. It destroyed the very concept of the hive mind or made it moot at any rate. The pseudo erotism between Data and the BG was not erotic at all, it wasn't anti-erotic either, just ridiculous or embarrassing if you will. Seriously who could be turned on by a being who doesn't have a body? She's just a head and a spine, most of which is in metal!!! Anyway, bad idea, very bad idea!!!

I actually like Justice. It reminds me of a run-of-the-mill TOS episode....which is a compliment in my neighborhood.

Angel One I can’t agree with, though. It’s a low-point of S1. Mainly, it’s just boring and mundane while also being laughably ridiculous .
