Tilly is still an Ensign she is not a Commander. Don't confuse her bridge position with her rank.

this isn't the first time in Ensign has been given command of a starship in Star Trek either. So yeah when they give her her own ship then you can tell me they've jumped to the end of her arc.

she's not an actual captain yet and she's got a few more years to go before that happens.

Which is one of my main issues here. If you're going to make her Acting XO, at least promote her to full Lieutenant. WTH, Saru?!

Well, that was fine. Which is how I've felt about every other episode this season. Kinda feels like they jumped to this new time period to free the writing and then didn't really know what to do with the new setting. Show is just spinning its wheels.

May Wiseman put in an excellent performance, but I still don't get why she's the anti-Harry Kim. A newly commissioned Ensign made acting 2nd in command of what may be the most important ship in the galaxy - and then the position reaffirmed by having her in the centre seat in this kind of emergency situation, with so many other more experienced and trained officers just seems... Negligent. I'm not gonna get bogged down in the arguements being posted here though. It is what it is. Kurtzman helped set the precedent himself in '09. Just really seems like a nonsensical decision regardless of what happened in the episode:shrug:

Making the burn be caused by the Kelpian being upset is.... Weird. Maybe if they had established that Kelpians develop telekinetic abilities after they lose their ganglia and live long enough it would have made a bit more sense? And also given Saru something to look forward to since he's like the oldest Kelpian alive in his time.

Anyway, I'm betting it was his mom dying that caused the burn, and the mystery room is her grave or the holodeck controls.

Glad Doug Jones got a few days break from the make up! Although why he could feel his heels on the floor when it's just a holographic overlay and he wasn't actually transformed into a human is weird.

Weird is Star Trek at times... Still don't know what to think about the episode.

There's weird because it's a great big galaxy with God knows what out there and weird that is what a weird choice by the writers, this doesn't make any sense:shrug:

Indeed yes. And, honestly, she was on the command track with the Academy already, been through situations that other cadets likely had not been, and had unique experiences. Saru decided she had the experience and training to step up. Whether that works or not doesn't change the fact that he lawfully put her in to that position,so she is the XO.

The rest is red tape.

7. I'm not feeling this one. So, we're in the 32nd century with a brand new universe to explore and a mystery to solve. And we beam into a holodeck episode, which were overdone back in TNG! Plus, the Burn was somehow triggered by a child Kelpien?! I'm sure there's a bit more to the mystery, but I'm suspecting it won't be worth the wait given the evidence at hand. A poor, dragged out setup.

Not a fan of the Osyra taking over Discovery. Another overused SF trope. Bad guys take over the hero ship and have to win it back. You get to use all the standing sets and put the good guys in a different position. But it's also overused. I don't buy Osyra being able to both track the Discovery and getting to this nebula on time. Just bizarre.

I enjoyed the first part of the season but it's really fallen apart in the past handful of episodes. I'm still hoping they'll pull out a good finale. Fingers crossed. But I have concerns.

I agree and its one of the reasons I love Star Trek. We'll see if it makes sense in the end of S3 or not.

And no alarms of any sort go off when tons of people suddenly beam aboard your ship, and the new Starfleet protocol is to just stand around looking goofy. This wouldn't happen on The Expanse.. There'd be a brawl
This is Star Trek. They only brawl in bars.
If someone beamed in on the Expanse the characters would be dumbstruck.

Also, it's usually a bad idea to start a brawl with someone pointing a gun at your face. Just finished rewatching the episode, no one was standing around looking goofy. A few tried to resist (Rhys and Detmer) but were "discouraged".
