Well, it was better than the last two episodes. Pinning the burn on some kid freaking out is a let down; kid goes nuts and millions of people die for that?

I loved the friction between Tilly and Auntie O. As ridiculous as it was promoting Tilly to First Officer, she did have her moments this week. It made the Killy moments almost worth it. On a related note, I'm glad they backed off on the heavy liquid liner on Mary's eyes. With her pale complexion it looked terrible on her lately.

I must say that this episode had some of the most awesome visuals I've ever seen in Trek. The production designer wins three Internets. :techman:

And I hope nobody actually tells Su'Kal that he's responsible for the Burn. The shock might very well kill him.

I do have one question, though: Su'Kal is obviously ignorant of any kind of world outside the Khi'eth. Surely the holograms would have taught him about it from day one?

but it seemed like Kirk always had armed red shirts/security guards standing on either side of the turbo lift doors. So there was some attempt to keep the bridge secure.
I remember someone back in the TOS era complaining about that. (David Gerrold, maybe?) Too much like the old RN practice of having Marines to keep the crew in line. That subtext became text in "Turnabout Intruder," but that was the end of TOS anyway.

Agreed about the visuals.Amazing.

Kinda makes me sad that previous crews didn’t benefit from modern storytelling aids.Imagine what the Horta could have been.

A minor quibble: Shouldn't Su'Kal have gone through Vahar'ai by now? Clearly he hasn't, because he was terrified at various points in this episode. But that implies the "first phase" of Kelpien life goes on for like 150 years?

Yes, I recall the episode Die Trying suggested that Kelpiens no longer go through this. But that would seemingly mean that Su'Kal wouldn't be predisposed to fear.

Maybe Su'Kal's connection to the dilithium planet (and the radiation surrounding it) which contributed to the Burn, also prevented him from undergoing vahar'ai.

Still not the "untrained science track ensign" you claimed above. She's been on the command track for a year under some petty harsh conditions.
Less then a year actually, and all of that was spent doing science stuff because of the Red Angle thing.

Meaning her training at this point amounts to "read a couple books".

Well his development seems stunted, so perhaps that applies to Vahar'ai.

I see a lot of negative reactions but I loved this episode, gave it a 9.

It was a weird episode but in a good way. And I usually like weird episodes. I even liked TNG’s “Masks” which was hated by the online community at the time it aired.

The source of the Burn was interesting too. I am glad it was not some new big bad wanting to destroy the Federation.

seems like we are getting a 3 part season finale. Can’t wait to see the rest.

Vance and Grudge are my favorite new characters. They better not make either a bad guy.

To support their friends and collogues. Funerals and memorial services are not for the dead. They are for those left behind. It's the same reason why people send sympathy cards even though they didn't know the person who died.

These bullet points are sort of a stream of consciousness as I watch (and pause) the episode upon first viewing. They don't necessarily stand up to scrutiny, even my own scrutiny, on repeat viewings and often provide no more insight than one can expect from someone with very little sleep about to go to a grueling day of work on Christmas Eve.

Of course it makes sense for Tal to be there. It wouldn't make sense to hear Tal make remarks about Georgiou as if the two were well acquainted, but that didn't happen, thankfully.

They are in cahoots. Grudge is the mastermind and Vance is the muscle.

I enjoyed that. It was essentially a set of Trek tropes, but a well-executed one for the most part - especially Jones' performance. He is such a gift to the franchise.

The Burn's explanation was something of a damp squib but hopefully there will be a bit more to it.

I'm assuming Zora will be the one to save the day.
