Spoilers Batwoman - Season 1

It does seem a little odd that they didn't just make Sophie the new Batwoman since both character and plot-wise it appears to be the path of least resistance.

Either they don't think the actress has the chops for the lead role (I doubt it), they have some very specific plans for Sophie that are more interesting than having her be Batwoman, or they're just embracing the opportunity to do a soft reboot and redefine a lot of the show's dynamics and would rather get some distance from the Kate/Sophie relationship than double down. Of course those aren't all mutually exclusive.

The lesbians in the audience are going to be furious if Sophie goes back to her husband, just because the one woman that's catching her eye right now buggered off.

I had suggested that earlier, and (later) gave specific reasons detailing your logic, but Christopher essentially called me a racist for doing so.

Whatever the reason, Sophie--based on her character arc of agreeing with Batwoman's methods--would have been the logical choice for a replacement. Further, if Rose ever guest stars on the show going forward, Sophie as Batwoman would have generated tension with Jacob, since Kate would be frightened a the idea that he has kill orders against Batwoman.

...and that was BS in the extreme..

The more I think about it, the more it feels like they're deliberately going for a clean slate rather than build on the existing story threads more than is absolutely necessary. I'm still of the opinion that the likelihood of Rose being asked to/be willing to reprise the role at some point down the road is decidedly slim, in which case it makes sense to clear the board and effectively start over, even if it's mostly the same cast.

If they end up going in that direction I wonder what they'll end up doing with Alice? My suggestion is to put her on the Waverider.

I think Alice is an interesting enough character that they don't need the sister angle in order to keep her around as a nemesis. Mind you, only a few of the other CW/DC shows have managed to keep a villain around for more than a season or two (not counting long absences) so one way or the other she'd be gone before long anyway.

They'd already been setting Safiyah Sohail as the next Big Bad as we reached the end of the last season, so I have a feeling they probably would have been tying up the Alice storyline pretty soon even if Ruby Rose/Kate had stuck around.

Worst comes to worst, we bring back Black Canary from Birds of Prey.
I presume since there's been no news that the Canary spin-off isn't being picked up? (Unless there has and I missed it.)

Whatever the plans for Alice's arc was, I suspect the actress made enough of an impression that they might look to keep her around in some capacity. I mean isn't that pretty much why every season of 'The Flash' gets a new Wells?

I mean if nothing else, right now she's the closest thing they have to The Joker AND has the chops to actually pull it off.

There may be a misunderstanding.

Rachel Skarsten sorta played Black Canary on the 2002 Version of Birds of Prey, but Lori Loughlan definitely played Black Canary in 2002.

It's weird that Alice and "Dinah" as a grown up Black Canary didn't meet during Crisis.

Oh, that was is on Youtube. Entertainment Weekly says it's an EW exclusive.
The way the article talks about the surprising way Ryan ends up with the suit, makes me think she might accidently stumble across it somewhere, and decide to take it for herself. I had been expecting Kate or Luke or someone to decide she should take over, but it sounds like she might end up doing it all on her own after she finds the suit.

Yeah, that's kind of what I expected. After all, she's not someone Kate or Luke previously knew; Ruby Rose isn't going to be there to do any kind of handoff; and they'd presumably want to get Ryan in the costume within her first episode. So the logical conclusion is that she gets the costume first and adopts the role on her own initiative, then has to win Luke over later on.

I wonder if Mary might have some role as an intermediary, though. Ryan seems like the kind of lower-income person Mary helps through her clinic, and we've seen Mary interact with copycat Batwomen before. So she might be the first to accept the newcomer in the role, or maybe she even facilitates it in some way. Though on the other hand, her loyalty to her stepsister might make her feel the opposite, so it's hard to say.

Kate leaves a multi-million dollar Batsuit lying around?

No wonder she leaves town - forget Alice, Luke would be on her tail and so pissed :)
