So maybe you might think that I am making a criticism of writing and directing choices? Just maybe?
Why though ??
The scene was written to precisely show Burnham's current feelings toward coming back to the ship and her reluctance to just diving back in as a crew member.

That was very much a main plot of the episode. How would having a longer "staff meeting" explained her feelings any better?

Hmmnn... how many "Ancient Races" did we see during TOS?
At least three or four?

Significantly more than during later Trek, for sure. But they still seemed rare, and generally speaking stuck to a single planet didn't they?

I mean, in a way it's similar to the RL argument about the Fermi Paradox...if technologically advanced aliens are common, why aren't they here already? A civilization which has a 100,000 year (or longer) headstart on us should have the capacity to colonize the entire galaxy. That doesn't mean every one of them would choose to do so. But all it takes is one, given the level of "deep time" in the galaxy's history, to form a galactic empire.

Well they all seem to be within hundreds of years of each other.
More like B5 where is baby Earth, centauri who been around a few hundred year's. Minbari over 1000, and vision a few million

So on this week's Discovery, Earth has Brexited from the Federation, and nobody replied to Tilly's 'cake is forever' with 'the cake is a lie'.... Lesley had a wibble at the reunion scene cos she'll be feeling like Michael when there's an SCA event, and I'll be totally Georgiou, watching from the back for a moment... And yeah, any other choice of Captain would have been wrong. Been waiting for this confirmation since the end of season 1.

Why can't I critique writing and directing choices? This seems very argumentative.
Why does asking about your reasons for making that critique seem argumentative?

Isn't having a discussion about the show and our reasons for what we think, is why some of us are here?

SO, pointing out that you may have missed the intention of a particular scene is no longer part of having a discussion.
OK..., pardon me..., I'll attempt to remember that in the future.
;)

I do wonder Why Saru didn't ask for History files for United Earth just so they can fill in the back story of whats happened in the galaxy/system.
Temporal Prime Directive in reverse? Time travel may be banned in this era, but the rules governing its existence and interaction with it are likely still in place, in case other unrestricted travelers arrive (like Discovery).

Tree hugging scene was a rather lovely ending, for a second I thought they were not going to show us Earth at all.

My one gripe is that Burnham seems like she's been gone for a lot more than a year, both in temperament and in what she has been up to. She and Book talk like it's been 5 to 10 years ("remember that time"...), not one. Given they had free reign in that, I'd have written it longer myself.

my first thought was "my god, they are literal tree huggers now. But the scene worked.

I agree. They should have went with what was clearly the writer's gut and had Burnham been away longer. There's too much "remember that time we" stuff packed into a year, and I have a feeling they will keep drawing from hammerspace to fill in Burnham's lost year.

Interesting that Terralyseum now has communications.

Yet 32nd century earth cant contact titan.....

Hell I could send a fucking radio signal to Titan right now from my backyard. Of course no one there to hear it and it would take 80 minutes.

But 32nd century earth could of sent a " You cool bro?" by simple radio.

On the one hand, I would agree. I had hoped that the montage in the previews released last year would have summarized a longer period of absence from Discovery. The character obviously changed in that year, but from our perspective, she lept forward a year.

On the other hand, let's get going on the story. The season just isn't long enough to give that year the depth that it needs.

I think this is because of Adira's age. She's only 16 years old, perhaps the symbiont can integrate itself more easily in a younger host body, Trill or not? Or Adira might have other connections with the Trill world that she is not aware of yet.

And who knows? Perhaps it'll be revealed later than the Tal symbiont is a twin or first cousin of Dax? ;)
I wonder if they kept the thing from Enterprise where the 31st century corpse that Phlox examined was "more or less human" but had ancestors from dozens of different species.

Maybe Adria is like 1/16 Trill and that's enough to keep her from getting hurt by the symbiont?

That was embarassingly bad. But then this is the universe where Earth forgot to listen in on radio waves by the 23rd century. They could have just sent a "Dear Vger, Creator is out to lunch. Will return next millenium. 73 de Carbon Unit. K"

but yeah, wish they had not picked something as close as titan. Discovery writers don't always seem to think things through. But I like the show, warts and all.
