MacFarlane should be fucking running Star Trek.
While he would undeniably do a better job, I think it's best he sticks with The Orville where he's able to make it the show he wants it do be, rather than being expected to mold it to the standards of a guy who's been dead for nearly thirty years.
If McFarlane is willing to kill his darlings then OK. But I think he is too close to Star Trek as a fan to take it in a new direction.
MacFarlane can do serious drama. Orville has shown that.

Absolutely. I was first reluctant to watch The Orville because I thought ist was a cheap comedy/parody, but in the end I found myself enjoying it twice as much as Discovery and Picard combined. It felt like Star Trek ... for the first time in many, many years. Seth MacFarlane seems to be the one who truly understands the nature of Star Trek, so I'd be more than happy if he became the Kevin Feige of Trek.
It's shown he can do nostalgia. Orvile is 90's style Trek with a few dick jokes.
You're mistaken.
It's vastly better conceived and written than most of modern, post-TOS Trek.
They’ve done serious drama too
Watched a couple of episodes of it but never got into it. Watched every episode of Discovery though despite not really liking it. Hopefully it'll improve in season 3.
There is good drama occasionally as well.
My concern with McFarland is that he is too close to the material. He will fall in to the nostalgia trap even harder and not want to change Trek much.
