Nice, wasn't it ? Yes, there was welling up.

The update on who was doing what now was nice too. It would be nice to see Big Finish picking up and running with that.

Lovely. It had to be produced under very limited circumstances, but they adapted creatively -- and of course it probably wouldn't have happened at all without the need for some content to fill the void. But it's great that they got so many cast members to participate, and it was great to see them again, all grown up (I'm amazed it's been that long).

Oh...

Excuse me I have something in my eye...

That was so touching. I love Jo's explanation as to why the Doctor wouldn't be there, which was both in character for her and probably true.:wah:

I was pleasantly surprised to see Ace. Was the story she mentioned a Sarah Jane Adventures arc that never got produced? If so, someone needs to write that book.

I was starting to grow genuinely misty-eyed early on in the narrative and then had a very genuine laugh when the waiters turned out to be attacking aliens. Because, of course they were.

I love the final scene at Bannerman road and the farewell to Mr. Smith. Rani's bit with Mr Smith was magical. Closing the book of old with a promise of new adventures to come. Someday.

Jacob Dudman's performance was really something. It wasn't just the way he read it, but the way he reacted to it as he was reading it, the way he moved around the microphone to give the viewer a look.

The guest stars were a surprise, and I really started to wonder if Tom Baker himself would appear at the end. When Sophie appeared and started talking about how the Doctor missed her, and one she met Sarah she missed her, too, my eyes got all foggy, the throat constricted, and I cried for twenty minutes. The ending with Rani and Mr. Smith is exactly where I thought it would go, and even though you can wonder which Doctor it could be, in my head and heart there's no question -- it's Old Tom.

I would guess so. The TARDIS Wiki has no entry for "Diamond Wolf Clan" or for Ace and Sarah Jane meeting outside of this story. And RTD has said that he had plans for Ace that were aborted by Sladen's passing.

Whereas I was struck once again by what a terrific actor Daniel Anthony is. I always liked him as Clyde, and he's gotten even better now. I wish Clyde and Rani would get their own show.

Oh, speaking of companion pairs, I did a double take at the reference to an Australian couple named Tegan and Nyssa.

even though you can wonder which Doctor it could be, in my head there's no question -- it's Old Tom.

I prefer to imagine it was Thirteen. After all, if the show were still on, that's the Doctor who'd be showing up on it now. And while RTD's version of Sarah Jane might initially be disappointed that the Doctor isn't a bloke anymore -- and would probably be skeptical of her identity at first -- I think she'd be delighted once she got used to the idea. I mean, a female heroine palling around with a multiracial trio of companions whom she treats as a family? Kind of has a familiar ring to it.

I do recall some raised eyebrows at fans noticing that Nyssa & Tegan shared a room on the (infinitely spaced) TARDIS, something only two other pairs of companions were shown on screen as doing and both of whom were or would eventually become couples; Barbara/Ian & Amy/Rory

That seems an odd reason. Countless people have roommates of their own gender without it meaning anything. It's routine in college dorms, for one thing, and I imagine it's common for flight attendants staying at hotels between flights, so it would come naturally to Tegan. They could've chosen to room together for the company.

And I wouldn't say Ian and Barbara shared a room; back then, the TARDIS was just shown to have a sort of communal bunk setup.

Part of it is the general tendency of fandoms to having the shipping goggles on for various character dynamics and interpreting a closeness to Nyssa & Tegan that just happened to line up with the shared bedroom detail.

(Its also probably one of the few gay/lesbian relationships with recurring characters that could even be theoretically possible from Classic Who given the inconsistent amount of companions on that show)

Lovely, touching, bittersweet. Although I would still rather not have her die in the show proper, but this is still enormously sweeping in emotion and the feels. I loved it.

But I do wish the Curator had appeared at the end, telling us what really happened with Sarah Jane's last moments... a final bow by Baker, as well.

Baker's playing that part in some new Big Finishes soon-ish.
