Should a Pike show take the Orville approach?

I think Pike knowing how he is going to end up would lead to a healthy dose of fatalism..something that would be interesting to explore because up until now only Klingons have accepted their death and are fairly reckless in battle on that account.

Of course not counting the Jem Hadar

 

I think it'd be fun if they played with that. Pike, knowing he won't die gets more and more reckless (like a reverse Final Destination) which eventually leads to him being grounded and made an academy instructor... which is what leads to his accident.

 

I made note of the fact that the Klingons flared up into war stance in TOS conveniently right after Pike was crippled and disappeared. Pike, as a survivor of Boreth and arguably the public face on the end of the Federation-Klingon War, might be viewed with a high amount of respect and (reverence?) by the Klingon people at large.

 

In TOS he actually gets promoted to Fleet Captain, which is usually a staff position on an Admiral's staff.

Maybe commandant of Starfleet Academy?

 

I would very much like the Pike show to be episodic without any big season-long story arc. But I would like the characters to be able to have their own personal story arcs -- not a complete reset every episode.

In a way, I want them to pretend it's 1965 and treat the show as if it had been picked up by NBC based on the first pilot. But I don't think you could do that literally without it coming out as a TOS parody. There would have to be a balance between retro storytelling and modern sensibilities.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
Star Trek: Five Year Mission

 

Well if the show were to do that you'd need a TV in Pikes quarters

 

To me, more episodic television has better re-watch value than highly serialized shows. I can sit down and watch a standalone episode with a satisfying narrative, and not feel compelled to plow through the rest of the season to go through the rest of a longer narrative wherein each episode simply serves the purpose of leading into the next one and not telling a solid story in and of itself.

Anthology shows are back in style, largely thanks to Black Mirror. About a dozen of them have popped over the last few years, or are in active development.

I'd love it if they did a show where they solicited scripts from prominent science fiction writers, in lieu with of having a writers room.

It's wishful thinking. The show is likelier to involve a shadowy conspiracy in Starfleet and a universe-ending future that must be averted.

 

Honestly to a point I'd rather the Pike series be something more like four 90 minute mini movies than 45 minute episodes.

 

Agree 100% althought there are shows that are episodic and still interesting to watch. It's all about how you balance the different things (comedic situation, new aliens, drama, plot...)

 

Anson Mount (Pike) and Ethan Peck (Spock) said they won't do a series unless it's standalone. I don't have a problem with this.

Well, I wouldn't mind a Sherlock way of release for a Pike series..
have 3 90 minute movies, each a different arc, with a somewhat over arc.. I would love a series, but i know Anson doens't want to live up in Toronto away from his kids for long, so maybe spend a few months up there a year, do a few years/seasons.. that would be nice

OR.. box up the enterprise set and move it down to LA.. doubt that will happen though..

 

Yes, please. Solicit stories from professional sci-fi writers as in the 60s, not just a room of people who must churn out a product every week. Have the stories be moral/ethical dilemmas, or good what-ifs. The stakes don't have to be THE GALAXY or THE UNIVERSE every episode. I'm thinking of the DS9 ep with Kira and one farmer on Bajor. It mattered b/c we cared about him and his little-guy concerns. I could take small arcs. That way if one is stupid, the whole season isn't blown.

I read an essay awhile back about the value of tv I grew up on . We got a rerun channel for awhile a couple years back (ME or Antenna) and I called it "stupid TV." No insult intended: I was tired after school, could kick back and watch an entertaining, undemanding half hour of Adam 12 or Good Times, or . . . Emergency! The characters didn't have an arc, the stories weren't all serious and/or hard to follow. It was . . . relaxing. Star Trek and the Berman shows were perfect in the sense that I knew the heroes, knew the mission, but it was also intelligent and cool. (No months-long puzzle boxes! I'm so sick of that format!) You can watch an ep or not and still enjoy the next one. I would be jubilant if I got an ep-of-the-week Pike show.

 

As suggested elsewhere, the Pike show, if it ever does happen, should take such a wildly unexpected approach that the only thing in common with fan clamor would be “Pike show”. Preferably as a result of that approach most people who keep thinking about it now would move on to a Kirk show instead.

I mean imagine what you could do with just the illusion of the week: Pike and Vina in a Western setting. Pike and Vina in the 21st century. It could be an anthology of alternating storylines as the characters refine their storytelling, which could also include the Talosians and other caged characters (or does everyone see themselves as being caged? Pike was portrayed as an exception.)

 

Star Trek should take The Orville's approach; it would become less of a somnabulent drag.

 

I like this idea as well. Pike on Talos type of show. Or combine the idea's. Pike wants to show the aliens his life on the Enterprise to help them learn about humans so you get to see some of his adventures but sometimes he breaks the 4th wall when he talks to them to sort of explain something about humans and why they do the things they do. Also maybe this happening 40 years after he came to Talos and Vina has died and he is a old man near death as well so in away he is also sort of revisiting his old life for the first time in a very long time and hoping this knowledge will help them out in some way.

The Orville isn’t a love letter, it’s a wankfest. Hence all the dick jokes. I don’t want any Star Trek to be like The Orville. But to get to your real point...

The people running all of the new Star Trek series have repeatedly made clear that they want to make shows that are distinct and different from each other, so that fans who don’t necessarily like one show’s style or subject matter will have other options. If there’s a Pike series, then, it’s reasonable to assume it will have a different tone or style from Discovery. More episodic storytelling could be a part of that. But Enterprise tried that in its first two seasons, with occasional Temporal Cold War silliness, and nobody cared.

 

Orville season 1 was very TOS-like, exploring new worlds and societal situations. The 2D universe was incredible, though how many 2D life forms the ship destroyed when traversing through it was never mentioned... Majority Rule is a Parallel Earth Development that would have worked in "Sliders" too...

Orville season 2 was very TNG-like, spending more time exploring personal emotions and relationships. Then drops the bigger arcs like hot potatoes because it has so many episodes per season to trifle about with implausible smartphone data conversion faff instead. At least the Moclan arc is not unreasonably wrapped up. The Isaac/Dr Finn saga, not so much...

Both maintained interest but season 1 was a lot more about world building and exploration, which seems closer to the meat and potatoes of good Trek but individual tastes differ. Just not like Soylent Green.

What will Orville season 3 be like? DS9? VOY? PIC? Probably not a prequel...
