Sam Rami to direct Dr Strange 2

The "nobody" who directed the first one also made it the only truly visually interesting MCU movie. Does Raimi have that kind of skill?

While I am disappointed to lose Scott Derrickson, Raimi is a great choice for a replacement.

Not all that surprising given that this was meant to be the Marvel movie that lent heavily into horror (albeit PG-13, no doubt) and Rami's horror chops are above reproach. And while he didn't exactly kick off the comic book movie renaissance, he did make it a record breaking hit.

On the comics side of things...I guess it depends on just how close to Rami's comic book comfort zone the script falls. Previously, the moment he was given a character that he didn't grow up with and therefore had no connection with (Venom) it all just came apart at the seems.
Also, this is Disney/Marvel Studios, not Sony. They're very much about keeping their directors on a leash (it seems to be exactly why the last guy left) and studio overbearance was the other reason why the wheels came flying of the Rami/Spiderman wagon.

Another factor to consider: the Spider-Man movies haven't aged as well as some might think and Rami (even when making horror) has always leaned towards the VERY cheesy and the Spider-Man movies are no different. I'm not sure that tone works so well with either Dr.Strange or the MCU as a whole, which tends towards a more self aware sense of humour.

So put me down as "sceptical" on this one.

Blade was the kickoff. X-Men was a solid first down. But Spider-Man was the first touchdown pass of the 21st century!

Admittedly, the sequels could get pretty cheesy at times. But the first Spider-Man deserves its iconic status. It's broad & colorful but still takes the drama seriously. And while the stakes regarding the villains often felt kinda small, they made up for it by making you feel like the world really would end if Peter & Mary Jane didn't get together.

I'm excited, even though I think Scott Derrickson got a raw deal and Doctor Strange is one of my favorite MCU movies. (I'd say it's my favorite one that doesn't have Thor in it.)

Shit. That's really disappointing.

EDIT: Yeah, I agree that the films of Sam Raimi (and the TV series of his production partner Rob Tapert) are cheesy as hell, but in the words of a Doctor Who companion a couple weeks back they're "good cheesy".

I must've missed the news that this movie had lost its director.

If I hadn't largely given up on the MCU, Raimi's (rumored) involvement might move the meter for me, but that ship has sailed.

Here's to anybody who does still like the MCU if this happens, though.
