TUC is my favorite, followed by ST 09, ID, TVH and TWOK. TWOK is overrated in my opinion as well.

The TNG Films are not worth a rewatch, for me.

I have zero problem with folks ranking the Trek films anyway their heart desires except when one tries to frame it as "objective." If TUC is your fav then awesome. People ask me what is my favorite Godfather movie and I have to say 1 AND 2 because to me they are one movie (3 is crap). I view the TOS films similarly and through the lens of Mr. Spock's character arc and see it as one grand epic (with TFF clearly being the worst). As for TNG, I liked First Contact (the rest were crap!). I loved the first Abrams' Trek movie in '09 (#2 and #3 sadly were uninspired clones of the 1st).

Having said that, if someone wants to proclaim TFF and NEM as their top two favorites then great … just don't claim it is anything other than subjective.

Which makes now different from any other point in history how? People, by and large, are always pining for "the good old days".

Not me. I'm a science fiction fan, not a when I was young fan. Always have been, always will be.

Absolutely its subjective. Someone here tried to tell me that ranking is a completely objective task and that my 10/10 had to be the same as their 10/10. Well, it doesn't work that way. We all have our different experiences that lead us to enjoying something or not. Different things bring us to Star Trek. I've given my rankings several times on this board and its probably been different because of where I am in life. It varies from day to day and my opinions have changed over time. I used to not find TWOK overrated. Now I do. But I make no pretenses that that is nothing more than my opinion. Because Star Trek is, at the end of the day, art. And our experience with all art is certainly subjective.

… More frustratingly is the long shadow TWOK cast over the franchise.

I sooo freakin' agree! I love the TWoK (I go back and forth between it and TVH as my ultimate fav), however, I hate Paramount's using it as a crutch. NEM and ST: ID were terrible. The strength of Star Trek whether on TV or in the theter was Roddenberry built something that could tell a variety of stories in a variety of ways. Sadly the Paramount suits have chosen to hobble it by making sure it tells only one type of story one way. And that way has been TWoK. It serves to diminish the original as well as the franchise. CBS with Disc and Picard are the ones that have kept Trek alive and vibrant.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Trek Into Darkness are the longest Star Trek films and are therefore objectively the best.

I treat Picard Season 1 like a Prime Timeline version of a 10-hour Star Trek XI.

Anything about the other films, I've said elsewhere on the board at one point or another over the last 21 years. So feel free to browse around while I talk about the actual topic of this thread instead. :p

I think PIC looks and feels more like a movie than the actual TNG Movies.

Not me. I'm a science fiction fan, not a when I was young fan. Always have been, always will be.

I’m a science fiction fan, largely due to the original Star Trek. I have no issues revisiting the good old days and still liking new work.

A more recent production date doesn’t make something superior.

Huh? You were always a science-fiction fan but not when you were young? Sounds very Doctor Who-ish.

I like that interpretation, as even when I was in my twenties a friend of mine called me an old hippy. But I recognize that the science fiction that was available to watch during my formative years was mostly not very good, so I don't put it on a pedestal just because it was there when I was a kid.

Star Trek was my first scifi series, quickly followed by Space 1999, Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers. But to be honest, my dad's science fiction book collection stirred my imagination a whole lot more as it wasn't limited like media SF is.

TMP is my favorite. Frankly, I think the "big ones," TWOK, TVH and FC are overrated.

TVH and FC definitely...

To perfectly prove your point, I love TFF and NEM both. In fact, I like them more than most of the fan-favorites.

She's also playing Soji.
I have a feeling the rest of Isa Briones apparances will be as Soji. The only way we'll see her as Dahj again is if there are flashbacks.

My top picks for the movies are The Wrath of Khan, The Voyage Home, The Undiscovered Country, First Contact, Insurrection, and all 3 Kelvinverse movies, with Beyond my #1 of those 3. I was a little surprised how many people hate Beyond, I absolutely loved it.

Any Star Trek experience that lets us enjoy seeing Captain Picard lose his shit has been worth the price of admission. First Contact, therefore, cannot be underrated.

Don't get me wrong. I really like FC. I just don't think it's the classic many fans prop it up to be.

Considering most of the TNG films came across like two part TV episodes overall (and except for ST:FC poor to mediocre ones at that...) :shifty:

FC comes across like more of an episode than Nemesis. That doesn't mean anything for quality or script....but Nemesis is far more cinematic than First Contact.

How is it objectively true? The Motion Picture (adjusted for inflation) was one of the most profitable and out performed many of the Star Trek features. At worst I'd say one could put it in the middle of the pack. It was certainly superior to TFF, GEN, INS, NEM, Into Darkness, and BEY. It would rank below: TWoK, TVH, TUC, TSFS, FC, and Star Trek (2009).

Btw, Box Office Mojo got shit tanked when Amazon/IMDB bought it. They stripped away much of its functionality. I don't know … maybe you have to subscribe to IMDB Pro. :wah:

*sigh* I'm not talking about box office. I'm talking about overall popularity in the here and now and I'm not sure why you want to harp on this one thing and try to turn it into a debate. I said TMP is not as popular as other Trek films and it isn't. The fact that you rank it in the middle of the pack proves my point. I never said it was the worst Trek film. I never even said it was the least popular. I said that, on the whole, it is not as popular as other films in the franchise. Because it's not.

It's okay to like a less popular movie. Hell, I absolutely love Generations and most people think that movie is terrible.
