I just can't imagine a situation where two works from the same franchise that are being produced at the same time wouldn't be compared to each other. I mean, if an individual has no interest in making that comparison, fine. But to think it's unreasonable for others to do it seems a little bizarre to me. That's just not how people are.
I'm just ecstatic that there are TWO+ Star Trek shows being produced at the same time again!

There was something in the last page about the possibility of forgetting that the Romulans were allies to the Federation during the end of DS9. Too many posts to bother quoting, so I won't.

In "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges", Sloan predicted that the next major rivalry in the Alpha Quadrant would be between the Federation and the Romulans. He says that the Romulans will be a very temporary ally and are only allied with the Federation to fight the Dominion and nothing else.

Exact dialogue:

Sloan: "Section 31 is extremely interested in this conference of yours. However, the Tal'Shiar will be handling the security arrangements, so we have virtually no chance of using any technical assets to gather intelligence. As a result, we'll be forced to rely on organic assets, like you. Your mission is to gather data on the Romulan leadership. In essence, we want you to take the pulse of their government. No pun intended."

Bashir: "You want me to spy on an ally."

Sloan: "To evaluate an ally. And a temporary ally at that. I say that because when the war is over, the following will happen in short order. The Dominion will be forced back to the Gamma Quadrant, the Cardassian Empire will be occupied, the Klingon Empire will spend the next ten years recovering from the war and won't pose a serious threat to anyone. That leaves two powers to vie for control of the quadrant, the Federation and the Romulans."

Bashir: "This war isn't over and you're already planning for the next."

Sloan: "Well put. I hope your report is equally succinct."

Fin.

Some stuff I dug up from Memory Alpha and elsewhere

- First time a Tellarite has appeared in TNG era apart from stock footage
- First time Andorians have appeared in the TNG era since TNG itself
- First appearance of a Bajoran since Voyager
- First appearance of an alien introduced in Discovery appearing anywhere else
- Picard's gift from Professor Galen was retrieved from Veridian III
- First time ever smooth foreheaded Romulans and bumpy headed Romulans appeared in the same episode
- Kasidy Yates is still in business
- Klingons still look like TNG era Klingons
- First time the Enterprise-E has been shown in a TV series apart from Troi's quarters in Voyager
- Fourth series to feature the Enterprise-D

There's probably more but that's just in the first episode and none of it was intrusive to the plot or characters.

I guess I'm the only person that liked that scene, especially when Picard erupted into righteous indignation after being prodded by the reporter. Nice way to combine some exposition, characterization, and conflict.

Plus, I've always been kinda curious about where the reporters were on STAR TREK. Aside from Jake Sisko, we don't often see journalists or even civilian media on STAR TREK. (I admit, I keep flirting with the idea of doing a book where a cynical, hardboiled journalist is "embedded" on the Enterprise.)

i'm looking forward to buying it - which particular enterprise?

With the plot line about the synthetic life forms, I wonder what that would mean for the Doctor from “Star Trek Voyager”? If synthetics are banned in the Federation, is the Doctor still around? Or is he deactivated somewhere?

A fair question it depends on whether or not the Federation sees a distinction between AI holograms who know what they are to Synthetic humanoids who may not and can be triggered at any time to complete nefarious tasks with no warning or danger signs whatsoever.

There's a lot of video-reviews out there, and one of them I watched today, part of it, is one of the YT reviewer guys I think I hate the most.

He doesn't entirely "hate" the episode but in his little recap he gripes a lot about Dahj, naturally she's a "Mary Sue" and, really, he just feels like a typical YT "Mennist" or other whiner and his little recap of the episode he makes several mistakes on what's going on.

I look forward to when Steve Shives and Red Letter Media do their reviews which I suspect they'll do halfway through the season or something like they've done in the past with Discovery.

That Boston nighttime shot also shows The Kings logo with crown on top--thought they'd relocate from Sactown... :p I guess a rewatch is in order tonight.

You say that but there is that story if Marina coming to work on her first day and asking where her wig and contact lenses were and they had no idea what she was talking about. Luckily she still had them from Nemesis.
You’d think they would have done some research into her character.

Here's the exact quote of the 'story':

I got the call, and then I didn’t hear anything [about Troi’s contact lenses],” Sirtis told TrekCore. “So I called and said, ‘You do know that I wore a wig and black contact lenses?’ I told them, ‘I think I stole them [from Nemesis], so I think I have them.’

“So we got the contact lenses cleaned – since they’ve been sitting in a case for like 15 years – and I have the wig, [both] that I wore in Nemesis.”

Sirtis added that Star Trek Picard staffers “wouldn’t have had time to make a $10,000 wig” and that she was unavailable for fittings and design anyway as she was in England directly before filming.

Nothing in that implies that the production team 'didn't do their research'. It implies that the contact lenses were probably a minor detail that could be sorted out closer to filming, considering how easy coloured contact lenses would be to obtain in hollywood.

So what was your point again?

Again, the only two scenes in this I didn't really like was Picard being interviewed by the nasty reporter and his whole discussion with Jurati. In both cases - particularly the latter - there was a lot of expository infodump style dialogue that really, really broke my immersion in the story. People shouldn't be telling Jean Luc things he knows already. Show, not tell, is how visual mediums are supposed to work.

Then again, expository infodumps have a long, long history in Star Trek.
I am correct in saying you have never seen an interview on a news program before?

That the writers don't care ;)

But the writers aren't in charge of makeups and wardrobe.

Heck, one of the constant challenges I have when writing novelizations is that scripts tend to be very skimpy on physical description and rarely what say the costumes and sets and props and SFX look like, except in the broadest sense.

Because that's not the writers' department.

Sorry. Should have said the production team didn't care...

Please note my post is tongue in cheek.
