George Lucas Felt Betrayed By Direction Taken In Episode 7

I’m not really seeing it. What I am seeing is a lot of people getting tired of being told they’re wrong for liking something, and that if only they’d watch these YouTube videos they’d agree that TLJ is a cinematic failure and that women and minorities are killing Star Wars.

I hate to keep re-litigating this, but this is how I see it. If it was left at "I don't like this movie because A, B and C," and we all politely discussed our reasons why or why we didn't like it, cool.

But, that's not at all what has happened. It honestly gets tiring. And its been going on for two years.

And then they think their argument has more weight because the guy who made "The Phantom Menace" wasn't happy with the new direction. :wtf:

It's a shame that people can't be critical of something without being put into these categories.

They can. I've seen valid criticisms of the sequel trilogy and I will debate the individuals who have said opinions politely. But sadly, more often than not, some voices come into the debate who derail the conversation discussing SJW agendas, Mary Sues, virtue signalling and that anyone who thinks the sequels are decent are simply NPCs.

After the release of TRoS, I would honestly love to have a debate about the merits of the Skywalker Saga as a whole without that kind of hate coming into this conversation. In this day and age, I'm not sure that its likely.

I agree. For me it's important that people understand why I dislike/like something,
but they don't have to agree with me.

You and I had some discussions about EP 7 and 8, I understand why you like the movies and I believe you understand why I dislike them, for me that's enough.

My wife will go to EP9 and you know what, I still love her and we don't discuss the movie everyday :)

I don’t think I’ve ever had an issue with your opinions about these movies. You’re clear where you stand but respectful and I’m cool with that. You don’t throw out ridiculous claims. You don’t claim to speak for all of fandom. You have your feelings and that’s it.

In other words: We cool.

I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to imply that you were doing that yourself, it’s just the general trend that I’ve noticed.

Ep. 7 on should have been about the struggles of creating a new republic from the ashes of the Empire and the threats to it from the remnants of the Empire. Instead we get the First Order, the Empire reconstituted, and a replay of ANH, with a new death star, starkiller base. Boring.

I would've focused the entire sequel trilogy around Han Solo's son turning to the dark side and rallying the fragmented remnants of the Empire under one banner again. No Snokes, no Palpatines, just a gruop of really intimidating imperial admirals at his side (Serkis in the flesh, Richard E. Grant)...

Episode VII would have ended with him launching an invasion against the core systems. No planet-killing superweapons or anything. The story would be character based, with a major focus on Luke and Rey's relationship. The Reylo Force Skype thing was IMO excellent and would be a major plot point.

But that's just me.

That would have worked if they were picking up right after Return of the Jedi, but it would have been a bit hard to buy that all of that was still going on 30+ years later.

Lucas has betrayed us all since the Special Editions in 1997. Maybe since 1982. Return of The Jedi could have been another Empire Strikes Back had he agreed to stick to the original outline he and Gary Kurtz wrote.

I don’t like most of the changes made in the special edition either but the idea that Lucas “betrayed” any fan because of this is a little over the top.

Yes it's hyperbole. He clearly lost his artistic judgement. More than any other filmaker I can think of.

There is certainly a fine line between art and commerce and it’s one that is hard to navigate. How do you make your living at the same time creating a product that your audience will enjoy? Where is that line? How far is too far? I think that’s different for everyone both as an artist and as a consumer. The best way to vote on it is with your wallet. Simply don’t support the series or filmmakers you don’t enjoy.

There were lots of directions episode 7 could have taken, and only 1 of them was sure to get people excited, and that's the one they took - bring the old actors together and have them do similar things to what they did the first time around. And I have to say it was done well! I came out of episode 7 smiling, but also hoping that now that the reintroduction was out of the way, they could do something new. And they did! Episode 8 was supposed to set up an interesting episode 9 that took us somewhere entirely different... And then episode 9 happened and it really wasn't too different after all...

At this point though, we've reached pretty much the same situation the universe was in after ROTJ, so now they can go somewhere new with it at last.... but more likely we'll just get gap filling prequels for the foreseeable future.

Because, at the end, it is a fairy story. Fairy stories don't go many new places. I think Episode 9 was new enough to be entertaining, while owning a lot of concepts from the rest of the Saga.

However, it definitely left me wishing that we had more with Rey, Finn and Poe together.
