Spoilers Crisis on Infinite Earths Discussion (CW Event Spoiler Thread)

Well, I suppose one discrepancy could be the appearance of the Daily Planet building. Presumably the interior was rebuilt after the Joker attack (I think they redressed the CatCo sets), but did the exterior, or the cityscape beyond, look anything like the one from SR? Well, any difference could be chalked up to artistic license and available digital assets.

I adored the production design of the Daily Planet in Returns, and examined it pretty closely a couple years ago as inspiration/reference for a project I did, so I was on the lookout for how this version of the bullpen would come out. I was pleasantly surprised by how many little touches the TV team put in to evoke it; I wasn't expecting anything except for the framed front pages based on the publicity shots, but they did put in a number of smaller touches, as well. The elevators had the brass doors (though was missing the elaborate inlays and reliefs) and black marble frames, and the waist-high marble trim. The general layout is also pretty similar. Personally, I'd head-canon that they moved to a different floor than the office in the movie after the Joker's attack, one that had been through one of those awful remodels where they cover up all the period detailing with plain white drywall and cheap fixtures. The next tenant is probably going to take up the linoleum and find beautiful marble floor tiles, just like all those stories of people ripping up shag carpets from the '70s and finding hardwood that would cost a fortune to put in today.

The city was totally different, more modern-looking glass and metal than the brownish Australian backdrops of the film, and was an entirely CG field of instanced generic skyscrapers. The building itself was similar to the film (looked like vintage '30s, and terraced up to a point), but smaller than in the movie, maybe half the size (it was represented by a model in the film; based on the way we mostly see the whole building from one angle, I suspect the main street-level shot was a paint-over of a photo of a real building, with the full building model seen in the distance not being made to close-up standards. The distant building was also slightly cockeyed from the street grid, for some reason). The globe was pretty different as well but, then, the globe was destroyed in the film, so maybe they just got an uglier replacement.

All in all, I expected something really generic considering how little we'd see of this version of the Planet and how much else would be going on in the crossover; the redress of the elevators, while not a major effort, does let me know that they popped in the DVD and looked through the archives to see how much they could recreate with what they had on-hand.

(It's funny, I was just talking a few days ago about official projects using cutting corners and stealing fan-art, but, honestly, if someone had told me we'd be getting a Superman Returns continuation that could've used it, I absolutely would've done a 3D set and exterior recreation after the head-start I got with the other project I mentioned, and left it where it'd be easily googleable under a CC0 to help out the shows. I still might, they'll have to build a Daily Planet for the new Superman show.)

Also, having pulled up the episode and the movie and scrubbing through them, it's probably that it's just because there are only so many ways to film a man flying at speed, but the shot of SR-Superman initially charging reminds me of him rushing to catch the crashing plane in the movie, and SG-Superman in charging back reminded me of the first flight scene from Man of Steel. But, like I said, it's a pretty obvious angle, combined with the 180° rule and the fact that the two movie shots I mentioned were pretty prominent in the advertising, so they'd stick in my head.

Or Kevin Conroy, for that matter -- counting video games, this is approximately the 15th distinct version of Batman he's played. (The others are... Gotham Knight...)

Where, to add an extra dash of confusion, Conroy was playing Christian Bale's Batman.

Mar Novu absolutely knew that Lex was going to do exactly what he did here, which is brilliant writing.

And Cryer is a perfect Lex (noting that his presence here is actually my first exposure to his take on the character because I haven't yet seen Supergirl Season 4) who should add an interesting layer to saving the Multiverse.

His appearances on Supergirl last season were amazing, especially the "House of L" episode. The writers really seem to up their game where his character's concerned, and Cryer makes the absolute most of everything they give him.

In its own, kind of opposite way, it reminded me of a favorite moment from the comic...when Superboy-Prime shows up and Peacemaker, from an Earth with no Superman, says something like, "What, another one of him?"

Did they confirm that Batman Forever and Batman and Robin, are in separate universes from Batman and Batman Returns? If the regular shows didn't, it's what Kevin Smith believes from what he said in the quiz during the first after show.

He thinks that Arnie's Mr Freeze is from Earth 97, not Earth 89.

He was answering a hypothetical question, not actually saying they were different earths. I may have misheard but earlier in the same show it was stated that the Bat-nipples were now a part of canon.

I’m sorry but I just see Kevin. He’s already a prophet.

Kevin Tran as Ryan Choi! :) He didn't have much of a role to play for now, but I liked Osric Chau on Supernatural.

It was good to finally see J. Wesley Shipp in his classic role as Barry Allen of Earth-90. I remember watching the series on CBS as a teen. It was unfortunate he had to make the ultimate sacrifice. A Flash did die in the Crisis, though it wasn't what Barry-1 had expected.

I don't watch Lucifer, though I was made aware sometime this year that he's a DC character. How much of a stretch would it be to include Gotham and Lois & Clark in this crossover?

Despite the massive hype, the Supergirl Crisis episode was only watched by 1.67 million, down from 2.17 million for Elseworlds and 2.71 for Crisis on Earth X. The Batwoman episode was watched by 1.71 million - second highest of that show's history.

It’s been stated by TPTB in a recent interview (saw it on Reddit, can’t find it just now) that they’re filming pickups over the break to be incorporated into the final segments; and that additional unannounced cameos could / would / should be filmed as well.

So what other new cameos do we have in part 3?

- Huntress and Oracle (voice only) from Birds of Prey
- Lucifer (yaaaaasss!)
- Jim Corrigan / Spectre from Constantine

And I totally think that many of these cameo characters also filmed “bookend” scenes when they filmed the segments we’ve already seen, such that when (nearly?) everyone is restored to their Earths, we’ll see them as proof that it’s happened.

Let's REALLY confuse people and bring back Rachel Skarsten as Black Canary.

(I know she's playing the baddie on Batwoman. ;) )

I think Lucifer was my favorite part of this whole thing and was also surprised how much I enjoyed seeing Routh's Clark Kent perhaps even more than Superman.

I also liked hearing my co-worker tell me of the reaction of her husband who only likes and watches Supergirl and Batwoman. "What is this? Why are all these people from those other shows on here?" lol.

She, on the other hand, watches Flash, Legends and as a distant third BL so I was trying to explain to her which episodes she needed to watch if she did want to see this. I wonder how many casual watchers get confused by this. I think it would be easier if it was truly treated and titled like a mini-series instead of taking episode slots out of the various series (I get that there are probably logistical reasons they do this).

Entertainment Tonight has an interview with Tom Ellis about this appearance. He says that, chronologically, they played it as if these events happened before the start of the Lucifer series (I don't watch personally watch Lucifer so others will need to figure out if that works out).

I was very annoyed that Lex Luthor replaced Routh's Superman. I loved seeing him back and looked forward to having a bigger role with a reduced cast. Despite Kevin Smith keep saying Cryor's Luthor is the best ever, I'm kinda lukewarm on it.

I was wondering if this should have been something to start the new year with while people were waiting for the shows to come back. So basically you have the midseason finales, and then the first full week of the new year, they dedicate an entire week to this crossover and air it kind of like how Torchwood did Children of Earth. Then in the second hour you could do Kevin Smith's show or maybe a better behind the scenes of what we just watched. Make it a week long celebration and then the shows come back a week later in their original time. Also, I agree, they should have labeled this as "Crisis on Infinite Earths" rather than labeling it as each individual show.

Everything I complained about today (The lack of urgency, Using Arrow and Flash to set up Crisis only to be welcomed with an episode that was action followed by a fan-wank, not addressing what we saw this season), they addressed in this episode. The Earth 2 destruction, Pheriah being explained better, and then those multiple cliffhangers to tide us over until it returns. I think the only thing I didn't like was Oliver's story, probably because I was confused by it. So basically Oliver's body was on Earth 1, his soul was on earth 666 (I see what they did there), and now his eyes turn green? I think that whole story could have been an episode on it's own because they rushed it.

I don't watch Batwomen or Supergirl, but I do really like the relationship between the two. Also, Brandon Routh really was wronged with Superman Returns. I really do like his Superman and wish they had given him another movie.

Overall, I liked the story we have so far. It's exciting and while I'm not as familiar with all the cameos, I am seeing this for what it is, a celebration of the CW Arrowverse. I do wish they had left some of the earths in tact and maybe the Wave-Rider crew alive mainly because I thought killing them off made the cliffhanger lose some impact, but it was exciting and I'm looking forward to the final night.

I saw the Smallville bit on YouTube. Really enjoyed it. I could totally see Smallville's Clark giving up his powers (pretty sure it happened 2 or 3 times on the show) but there'd always be some crisis necessitating him getting them back. And it goes against all that stuff in the final seasons about Supes being a beacon for all that's good. But he's happy so I'm happy.
