Besides the Enterprise, what's your favorite movie-era starship and why?

I'm not including all the random TNG-era ships seen in the Borg battle in FC.

I am going with the Excelsior.

Reason being when I first got to see it in 1984's Search for Spock it got me hoping a "next generation" starship like the Excelsior could be the basis for getting Trek back on TV with or without (preferably with) original TOS cast members.

Getting Trek back on TV with a new ship eventually happened and I understand why Roddenberry set it years later than TOS but I still would have liked to see adventures on it or a ship of its class.

DC Comics had some TOS crew adventures on the Excelsior set before The Voyage Home.

The competition is stiff. My runners-up were the Excelsior and the Reliant...

... but I went with the K'Tinga Klingon Battlecruiser. The opening of TMP just sells it. So does the gravitas of Qo'noS One approaching the Enterprise in TUC.

In a way, the Excelsior Class did represent the next generation. It became the backbone of Starfleet in TNG and DS9. And the main starship class of choice for Admirals.

Tied between the battlecruiser and the Oberth, but the Oberth was a new design for SFF and the cruiser was just a more detailed D7.

So it actually had to appear in a movie, rather than just exist during the era?

My personal favorite would be the Constellation class, in its Stargazer incarnation. A more detailed construct than, say, the Sydney, even if not created for a silver screen appearance. In-universe, this ship is the original departure from Kirk's ship, the Excelsior actually being just the step beyond.

For a ship making an appearance, I have to say K't'inga. Although the Son'a battleship was an innovative and beautiful guest villain, too.

I love the Constellation as well! I always had this idea.... In TrekLit, in the 23rd century, SCE used some old Daedelus class starship the engineers had tinkered with to get around. I know that in the 24th century they had Sabre's, but somehow I love the idea of them using the Constellations in the 24th century.

I picked the K'Tinga as well, because it was the only design other than the Enterprise to have had a counterpart in TOS. I'm honestly very disappointed we never got to see more of that design, in the movies or in merchandising (I would LOVE to have a scale electronic I.K.S. Amar to display alongside my Diamond Select TWOK Enterprise) although I will definitely be getting that XL K'tinga from Eaglemoss when it comes out. :klingon:

Excelsior.

And it isn’t even close, I like it better than the refit.

Since I first saw it on the screen in 1984, my favorite has hands down been the Excelsior! As for Excelsior bridges, I like the TSFS one. It gave the ship a sense of modernity and size, unlike the cramped and outdated Enterprise bridge. I don't like how they turned it into a TNG-ified bridge in TUC.

It's funny how my taste has changed. I first didn't like the D7 design at all, cause the neck looks so thin and vulnerable, and you'd have to walk endlessly to get to the bridge XD
But then it grew on me more and more, and now I like it more than the Vor'cha or BoP.

Absolutely. :techman: The Excelsior Class was to the Next Gen era what the Constitution Class was in TOS. They very much supplanted that role of being the all-rounder, as opposed to the more specific mission statements of a Galaxy, Sovereign, Oberth or Miranda variant. Excelsior was evidently the sturdy workhorse of the fleet.

A good outcome, given it's function in ST3 was to be, as it were, the lumbering clunky overpowered ED-209 to the Enterprise's sleeker more basic less tooled up but more maneuverable Robocop.

I don’t know that the Defiant should be on the list? Since it was created for TV.

I have to say Excelsior. While Mr. Scott may have not taken to her, I, like Sulu, did. My quest for accurate plans and models has led to my own drawings.
