George Lucas Felt Betrayed By Direction Taken In Episode 7

Oh, poor Billionaire George Lucas . He shat out the prequels and was nothing but a problem for the franchise after the OT, who cares what he wanted? The only good thing he did post ROTJ was generally let the old EU exist (which lead to the best stuff in the franchise), but even that he screwed with (forcing them to kill Anakin Solo, banning Wookie jedi because he's a moron, etc), and he destroyed it even before the Disney sale (TCW ruining the mandalorians and removing so much great stuff from canon).

Its like how Gene Roddenberry was essential for TOS, but absolutely shit afterwards. So, much like I have nothing but disdain for "Gene's vision" in Star Trek conversations, I don't give a shit what Lucas wants/wanted. As far as I'm concerned, the farther from his "future ideas" Disney can go, the better.

Yeah, this is why it is becoming increasingly difficult to take fandom seriously. The level of wishy-washy opinion changing is getting to the point of absurdity. The PT was torn to pieces by fans.

It was by some fans while others loved it and many thought it was OK. However, it is pretty amusing and appropriate that those who hated it, who thought anyone other than Lucas could have made a great set of movies, if only he had just been willing to let more talented people make them, see that other writers/directors can and have also made SW films they consider awful, it's not so easy or obvious to make great SW films as they thought it was.

There was. Gungi. Yoda said it was rare for their to be a Wookiee Jedi. He was in the fifth season of TCW and seen in one of Yoda's visions in the Sixth "Lost" Season. He's even in the last TV episode "The Wrong Jedi".

I like how the worm turns: during the Prequel years, Lucas "raped" our childhoods, but, now, because some people because Star Wars has suddenly become terrible, all is forgiven and we should listen to Lucas's ideas about midiclorians.

I wish Star Wars fans would pick a lane regarding who we are supposed to hate. I feel like I'm in a car driven by a drunk.

Yeah, I love how people who trash Lucas now all of a sudden want him to be involved in the new movies. I seem to recall Simon Pegg of all people who seemed to suggest this during The Last Jedi. Sorry, bashers, you don't get that right.

Speaking of Wookies, did anyone else hear back when ROTJ was released that Lucas' plan was to have the Wookies become the bulk of the new Jedi order? That would have been interesting.

Lucas needs to understand that he’s now Gene Roddenberry. In fact, he’s LESS than Roddenberry as he isn’t even a “creative consultant “ or developing the next generation of the creation he sold off.

I think they actually did bring him on as a consultant...

I think it's the same with Star Trek. I remember how vocal people were about their hate for Voyager, Enterprise, Berman and Braga. Now those same fans carry on like Voyager and Enterprise were the pinnacle of Trek achievement because they don't like the new kid in school, Discovery. It just comes down to people hating change, gatekeeping and generally over-identifying with a fictional universe. I don't particularly like the new SW films but I just don't see the point in pitchforking and feetstamping.

Science-fiction fandoms can be the worst.

Also, if Lucas hates what is being done to his former property, he probably shouldn't have sold it off.

edit: hit reply too early.

Pretty much this. Made all the worse by YT videos which pretty much come across as the "final word" on why something is terrible. We now have echo chambers that reinforce how bad something apparently is.

Roddenberry was also dead.

Whenever I hear that Lucas felt betrayed or hated this or that, I generally take such reports with a grain of salt. Lucas sold off Star Wars to Disney because he was getting older, got a new wife, and wanted to enjoy life and do other things instead of worrying about "the franchise" and its legion of fans. Sure, there are definitely some things with Episodes VII and onward that he would have done differently--and that's to be expected as the creator of the saga--but I think such reports tend to be blown out of proportion, IMO. It makes for excellent headlines and message board chatter though.

But I believe that if Lucas was offered a chance to do another Star Wars movie, he would say "Hell to the no."

Late to the party... but who cares? If he wanted things done a certain way, he shouldn't have sold the franchise to begin with.

Underrated point. *If* Lucas really wanted it done his way, nothing was stopping him from finishing 7, 8 and 9 himself. I think he passed the buck to Disney because Lucas is done with fan backlash. That's the impression I get from his recent interviews.

The difference being that Roddenbery's death allowed his creation to really take off and soar (Late TNG and DS9). What we have here is another situation entirely, The Creator still lives! With the timing of Roddenbery' passing, DS9 and the shows that followed were no longer beholden to the desires of The Creator. These points are well established in the HBO doc "Chaos on the Bridge."

Repeating myself here, but I feel it's important to re-iterate that "betrayed" is Bob Iger's word going into Lucas's mouth. Lucas may feel betrayed, but he didn't say it.
