Things that frustrate us all

^^ that sucks. And you can't carry a cushion around with you all the time either, to protect you from rough edges. Maybe the both of you could apply for a dress allowance? IMO you should be entitled to one if you have dress-killing furniture in your office. (We have sleeve-killing door handles *sigh* and at least we could talk the bosses into providing needles and threads in different colours)

I'm sure your comment above is in response to 1001001 liking Gov Kodos' post which corresponds to your notification yesterday.

1001001 / Digits is not a mod in this forum and he's under no obligation to maintain any kind of impartiality about critical opinions here, and we (the Misc. mods) had already ruled Kodos' post non-actionable by the time he commented. He has no power or responsibility to enforce the rules in this forum either.

This is not the first time this thread has been used as a stealthy way of dropping insults against mods and other posters before, and it's going to stop or the thread will be closed.

Discofan, you've been on our radar too much lately. You get a warning for trolling. Comments to PM.

Supervisor “We have been looking at these memory leaks for weeks now, can you take a look?”
Me “Sure. Hmm, the profiler has a lot of memory usage in the logging class. Let’s see what happens if I replace these String concats with StringBuilder appends.”
(Memory usage goes down by 80% immediately)

@Discofan , a note for when you return from your temp ban.

Upon further review, it seems that you were specifically asked to stop engaging in this exact behaviour at the end of June. Since you have ignored that request and have persisted in the prohibited behaviour, your posting privileges for this thread have been revoked.
 
I'm a nice person (At least that's what i hope and want to be) who likes to make theories and tries to make interesting posts and have good conversations instead of bashing things and drag down others with negative comments.

So when i post something, why are my posts and threads so often ignored or get answers for them much later than those of others who aren't as courteous as i try to be with mine.
 
I hope you don't take this the wrong way, Unimatrix, because I mean no offense, but I'm going to merge this thread with the "Things that frustrate us all" thread, also here in Misc. You should find plenty of people to reply there too, and hopefully no smartass remarks, which I anticipate might happen here.

Perusing through your list of started threads, I don't think you're being ignored though, buddy. People have responded to your conversations earnestly and with enthusiasm. You're doing okay, and don't let the little stuff like this get you down, alright?

Just a general comment about mismatched socks: I stopped worrying about those many years ago, after one of my female cats started stealing socks as substitute kittens after two of her real kittens were given up for adoption (something I greatly regret, given what happened to them).

Lightning first started taking my dad's work socks (I found a pile of them at the top of the stairs; she'd carried them up from his room, one at a time). He took them back, so she started taking mine. For some reason she didn't take whole pairs, but rather one of each pair.

Pretty soon I found myself with one sock of each color, and didn't have a choice about going to school wearing one yellow sock and one orange sock (or some other color combination). Eventually I just switched to all-white socks so it wouldn't matter if she took any.

Fast-forward a few decades... I still only buy white socks. And I never worry about odd socks, after seeing what our current Prime Minister wears. Justin Trudeau is a Star Wars fan and once wore a pair of C-3PO/R2-D2 socks (one character on each foot) to an international diplomatic conference. He's fond of colorful, geeky socks, or ones with unusual designs or patterns. It lets him express his less serious side in an unobtrusive way.
 
My daughter wears mismatched socks, and has been since like 3rd grade(she's in high school now) She used to say "It's in style" and now it's just the norm for her.

But for me, I hate when the washing machine eats my socks as much as any man.
 
It’s never good when a little girl from the street, that you don’t know, runs in to your house to tell you that another little girl, that you also don’t know, got trapped in your shed playing hide and seek with your own kids. No harm done thank god.

I’d like to think that making the shed out of bounds will stop it happening again, but they still eat the blackberries that they know not to touch and concerned neighbours still knock on the door to tell us that they’re on the railway again.

I sometimes think my obstacles and problems are the end of the world but I need to look at them as challenges to learn from and grow... but I never do(in the moment)
 
^don't give up. It's a bit like starting a car on a steep hill: you need a lot of power to gain the necessary momentum but at a certain point you can release the handbreak and the car will go uphill without rolling back.

Unimatrix, I am certain that this is really just an unfortunate coincidence.
In my experience it helps to post a lot in the respective ranks' Lounges since those are the place where people get to know each other and make friends. If you have friends on this board, they'll automatically comment your posts and a lively discussion will result. Just give us a chance to get to know you a bit closer :beer:
And from what I've seen so far you definitely are a nice poster :techman:


My argh-of-the-day is double-fold:
1) the ventilation broke and the chemists are cooking a particularly vile sewage sample in the lab - the whole building reeks as if we had a 5 day old dead body in the basement.
2) it's a simply perfect autumn day and I have to sit indoors and compute statistics that nobody will ever read anyway. I want to go to the park, dangle my feet in the little creek, feed the ducks and enjoy the sun. And build a kite.

That decisions about information and logistics for hurricane emergencies tend to focus entirely on Florida, less on other possible targets.

Saturday--the first full day in which it was predicted that Dorian would turn north into Georgia and the Carolinas, many stores around me were already running out of bottled water. Why? The manager at Trader Jones told me that shipments were being sent to Florida.
 
^That's slighly puzzling for an outsider. Could you please explain how a hurricane in Georgia would have an effect on the water supply? It might hit one or two water supply plants and wells, but certainly not every single one in the country. And even if there is some pollution by flooding, that would only concern surface water and the topmost level of ground water. Don't you take drinking water from deep ground water? Water pipes run below ground so that they wouldn't suffer from a storm.
I can't see a reason for storing drinking water. But I am judging from the situation in my country where a damage to the drinking water supply is impossible (a local damage would almost instantly be completely buffered with water from other regions), hence I'm curious to learn what's different in yours.

When the power goes out, practically anyone on a well is boned unless they have bought a stored supply of drinking water because they need electricity for the well to function. When hurricanes are expected to hit, Florida is usually, but not always, the first state to take the brunt of it on the Atlantic side. So the shipments of drinking water get diverted to Florida to help with shortages. When a hurricane turns at the last minute and strikes Georgia and South Carolina instead, they're short on supplies because of the resources diverted to Florida. Given that power outages from hurricanes can last for weeks in some cases, it's essential to have stored drinking water, because large portions of all three of those states are rural and on wells rather than municipal supply.
 
Of course! Sorry for being so dense. I had completely forgotten about the infamous American electricity grid. That's indeed something to be worried about.:(

I just checked the forecast and atm it seems that the storm will only skim along the northern coast of Florida, then veer to the right, proceed along the coasts of Georgia, South and North Carolina and then move out to the Atlantic again, aiming directly at Newfoundland.
