"the cage"

In "such sweet sorrow" there's a whole sequence of sollicite dialogue about the crystal's "cage." Probably an Easter egg.

I'll look out for it when I do my re-re-watch of the second season. I'm working my way through the seventh season of Orange Is the New Black at the moment.

I never made that association. Shows like DSC should stay away from simplistic, in-your-face easter eggs (“A cage! ‘The Cage’, get it?”) in favor of those showing someone did their research, like using star- or planet maps from existing sources.

yeah it's slow season in trek land, so I'm probably grasping at wisps.

You should never feel a slow season with so much else going on in 2019: forget about watching Trek until 2020, don’t give into pre-release hype and allow yourself to be distracted by the myriad other franchises out there.

Dude, it's the first of September, there's not much else going on at the moment, Star Trek or otherwise. We've got a bit of a lull at the moment. We're still a few months away from any major movie releases, the only genre TV on at the moment is Fear the Walking Dead, and that will remain so for a few weeks yet. While I'm not bored enough to start thinking someone saying "the cage" is a reference to the episode The Cage, there's not much else going to distract anyone. Even I've gotten bored enough to hit the porn sites hard. My right arm definitely appreciates the work-out, if nothing else.

Well, alright, I've got a new Star Wars novel I really should start reading.

But right now there is The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and the remainder of the limited Dark Crystal franchise. (Years ago I hadn’t even finished the original film, but the series looks great.) And besides, why limit oneself to a current show? Nobody could’ve already seen all the best content from over a century of filmed material (and then there are all the other media). Off the top of my head I need to see all of The Outer Limits, and both seasons have been remastered for Blu-ray. As far as I’m concerned, PIC and the rest of DSC can pop up whenever.

Okay, I do see your point there, and indeed over the course of the summer I've been reading for the first time (and enjoying, mostly) Tom Clancy novels. However, this is a Star Trek forum, and indeed this particular section of the forum is dedicated to Star Trek discussion exclusively. Since we are in a lull in Star Trek activity at the moment, we need to be discussing something. And while I may not agree with the idea that a reference to "the cage" is a reference to the episode of the same name, it is a Star Trek-related topic of discussion, and is therefore a legitimate topic for a thread in the Star Trek section of Trek BBS.

No one should become a couch potato. And the end of the day, it's a passive and sedentary activity. Having said that, I watch all kinds of things. But I'm not going to talk about them in this forum unless I can find a way to tie them to Discovery.

And now watch me as I turn around and switch to Off-Topic. :p

The original Dark Crystal film is great. Even though I haven't seen it in a long time, I recommend it to anyone. Especially if, like me, you're Generation X.

It’s not about becoming a couch potato or going off-topic, but specifically that there is no need to feel a dearth of Star Trek at this point in 2019. That suggests one is thinking about and looking for more Star Trek, rather than put it in sleep mode in favor of so much else (which wouldn’t be talked about here in detail, of course, but neither would DSC if there is not much to say).

There is no need for any entertainment, Star Trek included.

But, if I'm going to spend what limited time I do on entertainment it will be around things I enjoy. Star Trek happens to be one of them. Dark Crystal, Twilight Zone or the Outer Limits not so much.

I only watched the first episode of the new The Twilight Zone. There's nothing wrong with it. It's a good, solid series. But something I got hooked on like Discovery? Not a chance. I'll find out about Dark Crystal soon enough. But even if it becomes My Next Big Thing, I'm dead sure it won't carve out the same niche as Discovery.

I'm really interested in what Season 3 is going to do because this dwarfs all previous Star Trek series re-tooling. DSC Season 2 looked back at Star Trek's very beginnings, namely "The Cage", and now it's snapped all the way passed everything else.

This is how I equate what Discovery has done: The producers called DSC a bullet but I call it an arrow. It started off with the TOS Era but it had to back up a bit (by 10 years), so they could get the arrow into position in the slingshot. Then the arrow was fired and Disco bolted all the way across to where it's going to be in Season 3.
