Unpopular Trek opinions game

Agreed. Not even within the genre. My least favorite sci-fi movie is Red Planet (2000), directed by Antony Hoffman and starring Val Kilmer. That's two hours of my life I'll never get back.

Now for the trump card (dun dun dun): Emperor Georgiou is my favorite character on Discovery.

Agree on Georgi

Unpopular opinion : City On The Edge Of Forever is a pile of shit

Care to elaborate?

I just think its overrated
I like the imagery of the Guardian, but the whole Joan Collins casting clouds my opinions
She must have been well pissed off that she didn't get to wear a shiny, sexy space costume
After all. she is an insufferable diva, who couldn't act her way out of a wet paper bag.
In my opinion the best ever TOS episodes were "Balance Of Terror", "The Enemy Within" and "Amok Time"
"City" wouldn't be in my Top 10.

Unpopular opinion: Kirk's obsession on TMP with having a Vulcan as science officer is disturbing, borderline racist in fact. What if he had said, "I want a black woman as communication officer?"

Why is it racist or speciest at all? Vulcans are knowledgeable, logical and have superior intellect. They've been around the galaxy longer and have broader bases of information. Why would you not want someone like that as your science officer?

Replace "Vulcans" by the name of an actual race, ethnic group or nationality and maybe you'll realize how inappropriate that kind of remark is.

Apples and oranges. Different ethnic groups and nationalities of the same species obviously have the same max possible capabilities, where as another species all together has a completely different baseline. They don't have comparatively similar DNA. These things can be measured and compared and quantified. Nothing improper about it.

I disagree. That kind of stuff can be used as a back door way to peddle racist theories. Just like in the thirties, forties and even the fifties, the (extraterrestrial) villains looked like Asians and even their names sounded Asian. That kind of thing is neither accidental nor innocent.

What does any of that conjecture have to do with Kirk's very non racist desire for a certain level of capability that he was used to in his science officer? In-universe, they ARE a completely different species, from a completely different planet, with completely different DNA, organs, genetics and capabilities. You can't ignore the physical strength, longevity, galactic history and familiarity, telepathic abilities and high intelligence quotient of the Vulcan race. They are not better then humans, but have different qualities that Kirk knows are valuable on his ship.

On the Orville, is it racist that Ed wanted another another Xeleyan as a security officer? We don't need Superman, that cop will do the job.

This isn't Flash Gordon.

To be the equivalent, it would be Kirk saying he wanted a Human at communications.

Kirk neither specified a gender nor a race of Vulcan, just a Vulcan.

Your point has no basis.

If Kirk had said that he wanted a Human at comm. It would have been perceived as racist. In the MU the empire only puts Humans on the bridge (for example) and they are said In-Universe to be racist.

Further controversy: Spock”s “KHAAANN!!!” has a greater in-story justification than Kirk’s in TWOK.

Oy vey.

Is it racist (in Kirk's case, asking for a Vulcan) if it's because he believes the abilities / skills / disposition of that particular race are superior to humans (because in general, they quite honestly are)?

Is it racist to say that Vulcans are different than humans, that they have general qualities as a species that can be appreciated?

Is it racist for a Captain to take advantage of Captain's prerogative and use his own judgement to select his top officers? Kirk wasn't looking to fill the position for the ship's dishwasher or linecook-he was looking for his science officer.
