Star Wars Always -That '70s Show star Topher Grace's trailer for all of the live action movies

That '70s Show and Blakklansman star, and Star Wars superfan Topher Grace and trailer editor Jeff Yorkes have put together a new trailer that combines footage from all of the live action movies. I thought it was pretty good, have a look and see for yourselves.

 

Holeeeeee crap! That's gotta be one of the coolest things I've seen in a long time. I've watched three times today since I first found it. It's obvious that these guys have true respect and affection for the SW movies. I've heard Topher Grace also did an edit of the prequels, and now I'd really like to see that.

 

Pretty slick.

 

I loved how they edited some of the stuff together, like flashing back to the Kessel Run from Solo when Han talks about it in A New Hope, and Anakin and Obi-Wan's fight when Obi-Wan is talking to Luke. I guess they are kind of obvious, but I thought it was still really well done. Combing Obi-Wan and Luke's deaths the way they did was an interesting touch.

 

I like it. The use of deleted footage and dialog is outstanding.

 

That's really, really good.

 

Doing a "hatchet job" on a trilogy of films for no other reason than that you didn't like how they turned out is the complete opposite of respect... which is why I'm extremely skeptical as to the merits of this "trailer".

 

Great, except that's not why he did it. By all accounts, it was to see if it could be done as an editing exercise and a storytelling challenge. To take the footage of three movies and make a single (more or less) coherent story out of it is not about lopping out things you don't like.

But sure, if you want to go making assumptions from a position of ignorance, be my guest.

 

Where did Leia's "You two space jockeys" line come from? I've never heard that before.

It's a fleshed out part of Luke's recovery on Hoth that thankfully got dropped:

 

Needs more Leia—the real badass of Star Wars and the only Skywalker to not be tempted by the Dark Side.

 

I have an immediate aversion to "fan edits" because it's been my experience that they're usually done by people who wanted to arrogantly "fix" something - or multiple things - that they didn't like about a movie or set of movies.

If he likes the Prequels as they are and simply did an edit of them because he wanted to see if it were possible to tell the story in a single film, kudos to him, but I don't think I'm out of line to be skeptical of his motivations given my experience with "fan edits" in general.

 

The trailer is just a nice little overview of the series, there isn't any kind of commentary on them or anything coming from any kind lack of respect.

 

So what you're saying is that you're prejudiced against fans make tributes and super trailers because a handful came off a little arrogant? Gotcha.

 

^ No; I'm wary of amd skeptical about this particular trailer because of my dislike of - and skepticism towards the motivations behind - fan edits (in general and not just for Star Wars).

 

It's just a goddamn fan trailer, dude. It don't mean nothin'!

 

I put my cynicism and negativity aside and watched the trailer, and will freely admit that my fears were unfounded.

This was extremely well-edited and tastefully presented without being critical or agenda-driven in any way, and actually makes me want to see more stuff in the same vein from these two people.

 

This is why you shouldn't pre-judge something you've never seen.

 

Seeing that trailer again... I get a (slight) bitter taste in my mouth near the end, as the focus transitions to Rey. Her handing "Your father's lightsaber" to Luke, the awesome "No, there is another" moment, "It calls to you!" and "You cannot escape your destiny." All spine-chilling moments that start tears in even hardened, cynical fans' eyes... yet she's not Luke's daughter, she's not a Skywalker, she came out of (pretty much) nowhere. Yet everything in the four 1/2 minutes preceding seem to demand that connection, insisting that she fit that role. Don't get me wrong, I love Rey to death (I actually do enjoy both sequels so far, despite their clear flaws), it just doesn't... feel right... as we head into the final chapter. I really, really hope there's a swerve coming there.

 

Yeah, I had the exact opposite reaction, and I hope to hell that, if Rey's family history is ever clarified further, she does not turn out to be a Skywalker or otherwise related to Luke.

If anything, I rather like the notion (non-canonical though it might be) that Yoda's reference to another hope in TESB was not to Leia but rather to a completely different family line and/or person-yet-to-be that Yoda might hope for.
