So I'm hardly the teen demographic anymore (ok, I'm 33), but I've just finished Sex Education in one day and this is the show I needed when I was 16. It's still relevant to me now, and I can't remember the last time I saw something which was aimed at adolescents but dealt with things like insecurities, personal boundaries, body image and even abortion in such an entertaining but adult way which never talked down to anyone.
I welcome more shows like Sex Education, but I think we simply need more Sex Education. Literally there were 8 episodes. That shit on a stick 13 Reasons Why I'm a Dipshit gets 13 episode seasons and some of the worst tv episodes I have ever seen in my life.
I haven't seen 13 reasons why but have heard arguments for and against. Most of the time I appreciate shows with less episodes more as they have quality over quantity.
13 Reasons Why is truly horrible in every way besides the cast being super attractive. Don't ever watch. It as it's Netflix's quickest streaming show. But I really hope Sex Ed gets many more episodes and seasons. I just like shows to have 10 episode minimum, I'm weird.
I saw the trailer and wasn't that fussed, it was only when a fend recommended it to me that I gave it a go, and couldn't stop binging.
Is it violent or high on the sexual content? I know it's for mature audiences but if this is targeted towards Teens and young adults, maybe it will be a much more serious discussion rather than "over-indulging?"
Just high on the sexual content, there is violence, but nothing really worse than you'd get in the playground, certainly nothing graphic. As a series which deals with sex, naturally it does show people having it, although it's always for a reason in terms of the story and characters. It's also in a comedic way of dealing with actual sexual problems; performance anxiety, self esteem issues etc.
Yeah the show starts with a sex scene and I'm like 'Yeah this is going to be great'. If you like Sex Ed you should try 'End of the Fucking World', also like 8 episodes and on Netflix.
It was the way the sex scene ends which got me hooked. End of the Fucking World never really appealed to me to be honest.
The leads in both are very similar and I can strangely relate to them even though I have never murdered anyone and was definitely jerking off by age 15/16.
Degrassi Jr High/High was a show just like that in the 80's. It was praised at the time for broaching subjects that were hardly talked about such as aids, teen pregnancy, suicide, disability, etc, all done in a surprisingly raw manner for its time.
Just given it a quick search and it seems pretty interesting. It never made it here to the UK but it did remind of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air which often tackled teenage problems like drugs, guns, etc. And also the episode where Carlton loses his virginty springs to mind as well.
Degrassi is a show you should get behind because not only are the ones from the 80s but there have been spinoffs of them on TV/Netflix for at least the last 15-20 years. Never run out of an episode. Also Sex Ed was renewed for a second season of 8 episodes!
Well, what's remarkable about the Degrassi from the 80's is they used actual kids of the same age of the characters they were portraying. You don't see that much at all these days. There was no hollywood gloss and glamour about it, and when it tackled something, you couldn't help but sit up and take notice. And rather than being shot on a set, was actually shot in real schools. It was absolutely groundbreaking for its time. And it's perhaps one of the first shows that used story-arcs rather than having everything neatly tied up by the end of an episode. In a TV movie set after the series during summer after their last days in High School, they tackled doing drugs, drinking and drunk driving. After much drinking and partying, one of the characters got behind the wheel to go back to the store to get more beer and had a fatal collision. This was one of the main characters. In the 2000's, they decided to make a new show. It was a continuation in that at least one of the characters now going to school was one of the children of the original characters, and some of the other older characters from the original were now in teacher roles. One that was formerly a popular teacher from the original series had been upgraded to the role of principal. It was a bit more glossed up at this point, but it still tackled a new generation of issues having popped up. It even tackled school shootings when someone brought a gun to school after having felt bullied and crippling one of the characters, sending him to a wheelchair for the rest of his performance in the series. That guy who ended up in the wheelchair was none other than Drake, the man who's now famous for his rapping, but he got his start on that show and was really good in it. Some other actors later went on to the 90210 reboot (ironically) and Vampire Diaries. Here's a good article describing some of the episodes from the reboot. Watching the first episode. Fun show so far. The actress who plays Maeve, people have compared her to Margot Robbie. To me she is like a younger Emma Watson.
I watched it over the weekend and i'm very impressed. As others have said i'm also not the target demographic (I'm 40+) but it starts off as a comedy show but soon enough hits you with some real (and well done) drama. It has a good balance between comedy and personal drama/general social issues and reminded me a bit of Scrubs that had a similar good mix (although Scrubs had way more comedy than Sex Ed). I will definitely tune in for Season 2.
