Star Trek: Starships Model/Magazine Subscription

Yeah it’s the one that Aristomenis (Meni) Tsirbas did for an SotL calendar back in 2014, I think. I personally really like the design, but would have preferred the TAS version if Eaglemoss was going to do a treatment for it. C’est la vie...

I really like the one from the calendar and think the artist did a great job in coming up with something inbetween TOS and ENT. I'd much rather see this one than the TAS ship.

The SotL Bonaventure is a neat design – almost a missing link between canon designs – and I'll be happy to add it to my collection ob obscure Trek ships, but I'd much rather own the original Bonaventure as seen on the animated series.

Spacedock One is kinda not as cool as I thought it would be. I love all the intricate surface detail on the movie model, but I guess it's just no possible to replicate that on such a small reproduction. It just looks so incredibly plain as it is.

Yeah. Back in the day, I recall there was someone (maybe from ILM, or possibly even FASA) who mentioned that SD-01 was "about the size of the subcontinent of India", or some-such. That statement seems absurdly apocryphal at best but, If even remotely close to being true, something that enormous would be completely devoid of all discernible detail at that scale.

Then again, the one the E-D flew into (SD-02?) during "11001001" might come close to that size.

straight on it is a little plain. you have to run your fingers over the surface or look really closely to catch all the detail. under the rim where all the blue stuff is looks great and it is pretty faithful to the studio model, so i appreciate that.

my problem is how to display the thing. i usually put the ship of the month (or week) on my desk next to my computer, but spacedock stands so tall it looks like a lamp. so it's relegated to the book shelf... where it also looks like a lamp, but out of the way. i like this model but i have a feeling it'll be up on eBay as soon as the next discovery ship arrives.

So, they have a Bonaventure coming, but not the one from "The Time Trap" (TAS). :censored:

I'm quite happy with the Ship of the Line one, which looks lovely.

I think I've mentioned before that making a 3D model of a 2D drawing is tricky, and reconciling the so-called "first starship with warp drive" with the Phoenix and the rest of established canon is even trickier.

I'm still waiting for us to get the concept Voyager up in Canada though.

If they're making models based on fan designs from calenders and unmade concept art versions of ships, the questionable "first ship with warp drive" line shouldn't be a deal-breaker.

Have they done any TAS ships? It may be a rights issue.

Scotty's exact line is: "She was the first ship to have warp drive installed."

It's actually fairly simple to say the Bonaventure from "The Time Trap" (TAS) was the first Starfleet ship to reach literally that particular milestone of her individual construction, with the first contextual caveat being implcitly understood by everyone on the Enterprise bridge without need of being verbally specified, and the second befitting of remark by a technical journal hound and professional bairn fondler like Scotty.

For comparison, observe how Archer and crew can freely speak among themselves of their "first warp five ship" without always having to tack on "from Earth" or "in Starfleet" each and every time, and Cochrane may be referred to as "the discoverer of the space warp" or "the man who invented the first warp drive" without the qualifiers "among humans" and "with the unwavering aid and support of master titanium-scrounger Lily Sloane and others" necessarily being articulated, because they're understood in context.

An additional elegance of this approach is it needn't require her to be the first such vessel to have been designed, nor had her keel laid, nor been completed, nor launched, commissioned, etc., thus leaving plenty of room for other such "firsts" to be heard of in future stories without any contradiction arising.

I absolutely love that cute little chub of a ship. My favorite TAS design, probably. I like the theory that the female human on the Elysian Council clad in something reminiscent of a Starfleet uniform was one of her crew, too. Perhaps her captain?

Well, now i want someone to actually make a desk lamp that looks like Spacedock.

Antares is essentially the cargo ship from "More Tribbles" but with an added crew area.

Well, you hang invisible fishing line off the bottom part of the upper watchumacallit and tie it to smaller Federal ships, maybe like those old Micro Machines ones. For coolness.

Just a quick heads-up: There's a 20% discount going on in the UK and German Eaglemoss shops. Just use the code SECRET20. I just ordered a bunch of models I missed buying in my local shop since they kinda stopped having the regular issues, unfortunately.

Despatch email received for issues 142 and 143, UK. In my two-ships-per-month reckoning, this then counts as the February delivery.

 For whatever reason Eaglemoss has sent me the Discoprise twice, even though I only ordered one. Has this happened to anyone else before?

I've not had that happen either. I'm still eagerly waiting for the magazine that goes for the ship, actually.
