Ethan Peck cast as DSC's Spock

I don't know why it matters if it is a reboot or not. It doesn't make it any more or less real than any other Trek series. As far as I'm concerned it's part of the same world as TOS, things just look different because it was produced at a different time. But I know it's a show and not an accurate depiction of a real universe and some Trek fans don't seem to feel that way for odd reasons.

I've become increasingly partial to Roddenberry's own view that Star Trek was just a dramatization of the "actual" adventures of the Enterprise crew, the closest approximation that 1960s television could achieve to depicting events centuries in the future. He didn't hesitate to change things in TMP or TNG because, in his mind, they were just better approximations that superseded the previous ones, and he didn't feel constrained by the limitations and errors in the earlier versions. (When TMP came out, he told convention audiences to pretend that Klingons had always had ridges and TOS just couldn't afford to depict them correctly.)

So there's no need to invoke alternate realities for every little inconsistency, because those inconsistencies are only between the fictionalized accounts of the events rather than in the "actual" in-universe events. We're not seeing a documentary, we're seeing a series of docudramas that interpret some details differently -- like the way that, say, various different WWII movies might contradict each other in their portrayal of historical figures or events. The "reality" of the Trek universe is the broad strokes of continuity that the different shows and films have in common, while the inconsistent details between them are merely the dramatic license or error of the various chroniclers.

I think it's hilarious that while trekkies bitch about Peck not being like Nimoy, Nimoy's actual family have given Peck their blessing and think he's a worthy successor.
Only one person could portray Spock like Nimoy, and that was Nimoy. Tim Russ and Jolene Blalock tried to do bad impersonations of Nimoy as Spock in Tuvok and T'Pol, whereas Quinto and it seems Peck are taking the better approach by having the essence of the character but not doing a Nimoy impression.

And in doing so it won the approval of Nimoy himself with Quinto and Nimoy's family in Peck.

I loved Todd Haberkorn's Spock in Star Trek Continues. His version differed from Nimoys quite a bit but he owned it.

My worst fear for Peck's Spock is that he's more of a Vorik, that he'll play it like a zombie or robot. I doubt we'll get the awesome ultrasubtle humour of Nimoy or the insecure rebellion of Quinto again. But he could bring awesome new dimensions to Spock.

I don't know, in the couple of trailers with the exchange:

Pike: Is that a smile I see, Spock?
Spock: Yes.

The look and delivery Peck had looked like a Nimoy type of subtlety.

Bruce Greenwood had absolutely NOTHING in common with Jeffrey Hunter. They don’t look alike, talk alike or act alike. Yet Greenwood’s Pike was awesome. So you don’t have to slavishly look or act like the character you’re supposed to be taking over from.

Call me pedantic, but - while I absolutely LOVED Greenwoods' performance - I would have liked it if he had played Robert T. April!

Also a canonical Captain of the Enterprise, but one we don't have many pre-conceived notions about (except for an animated appereance in TAS, which is canonically if-fy anyway), and they would have had more freedom to do with the character what they wanted. Now, this was a reboot, nobody cared, and "Pike" simply is the better known name, and - again - Greenwood was great - but yeah, I generally always prefer new or blank characters to be fleshed out, rather than completely re-vamping well-known ones.

So what? Did you expect the Nimoys to do otherwise? Though it was clearly something that CBS set up, because the 'blessing' was announced alongside the press release of Peck, to ease any fan apprehension. Looks like some brought into it, others didn't.

One, the Nimoys could have declined comment. Two, if it didn't convince everyone but some people appreciated it what's the harm?

You're definitely one of those people that believe all the world leaders are secretly lizard people aren't you?

I don't have his cynicism, but aren't they???
:wtf:
Lizards would run things better.

I’m looking forward to seeing Pike and Spock together. We’ve only seen the glimpse of them in The Cage so far. I’d like to see why Spock was so devoted to him that he’s willing to risk his life to give him a better standard of living. I do get the impression that Pike was almost a surrogate father figure to him, one he needed given how strained his relationship with Sarek was. From the trailers, Pike seemed to be very concerned for his wellbeing and in the scene of them together an almost playful tone when asking him if he was smiling.

The one weird thing about Ethan Peck's and Anson Mount's casting is IMO that Mount looks so much older than Peck. Wheras in "The Cage" bot looked to have a similar age. I always thought Pike was a "pre-Kirk" friend for Spock, more of a mentor, yes, but not necessarily a "father"-figure. More his "introductionary" friend towards humans. Not as close as Kirk, but still. One of Spocks greatest strengths as a character always was - despite his "cold" logical appereance - his absolute loyalty to his friends. He would trash his entire own career for the well-being of his friends. That is great stuff.

The whole point of franchises is to keep them going. Not stop because you need to limit how a character can be performed. Other characters aren’t limited to just one actor. We have multiple Batmen, Supermen, Tarzans, countless Heracles, and god knows how many Sherlock Holmes. Spock is no different. The character stays basically the same, but different actors can bring different things into their performance.
Whilst this is true, I think Star Trek is a bit different. 'Sherlock Holmes' id about Sherlock Holmes, so you gotta have Sherlock Holmes (though even there anyone who is not Jeremy Brett feels a bit wrong to me...) but the show is called 'Star Trek', not 'Spock', it is not (or doesn't need to be) about specific characters, it is an evolving setting with a certain theme, and I'd like it to remain that way instead of redoing old characters. Past Trek shows did their own thing, made new characters and forged their own paths.

That being said, like it or not, we now have a new Spock, and judging by the little glimpses we've seen I think Peck will be pretty good. His voice in the new episode already made him feel more Spock to me than Quinto ever did.

Agree with all this, but especially Peck's voice. Introducing his Spock as a voice recording was super smart, I thought. He sounded familiar, and that grounds his Spock in the one we know before they show him being different.
