Star Trek: Short Treks

I forgot to cancel my subscription, so it looks like I'm the guy who paid for all these shorts. You're welcome.

Maybe that's what CBS intends this to be - a "thank you" to the people who couldn't be arsed to cancel.

Because doing this in hopes that people will sign up in October, rather than January (or February if DIS is pushed back, which seems likely IMHO if the last Short Trek is in early January) is ludicrous - even with the understanding that each of these probably only cost a fraction of a normal DIS episode to make.

They really should release them on Youtube or something though right before the season premier to try and entice people to sign back up for Season 2.

I would imagine that Netflix will probably get them once all four have aired and then show them as one package.

Not many people have lost money by overestimating the obsessiveness of Star Trek fans.

Short Treks won't be shown on Netflix outside the US and Canada as Discovery is. Not happy.

Does not bode well for The Picard Show, Starfleet Academy or the new animated series should they materialise. Very not happy.

buck up.

even if the short treks don't make it, there's no way CBS wouldn't ensure future full series like the picard show are available in international markets. there's probably very little at stake financially with the shorts, but they wouldn't produce these very expensive shows if they were restricted to showing in the US.

I'm not inclined to believe that any new shows will be withheld. Netflix basically paid for DSC straight up in exchange for global rights to the whole tv franchise.

But I am extremely irritated that they would pull this ridiculous distinction to withhold any content at all. I was assuming these were part of the show, and therefore would be distributed on Netflix at the same time as on CBSAA.

I mean for gods sake, why wouldn't you? CBSAA isn't anywhere near ready to even think about moving overseas. Foreign netflix isn't a competitor, it's a partner, and the more people have to enjoy there the more likely Netflix is to be open to continuing to pay and help offset the cost of new content...

Can't see that this affects that - these are what in the old days we called webisodes. It was pretty standard that these were hard to see outside the US domestic market when they were all the rage. I'd definitely just assumed Netflix would carry the Short Treks but the fact that they aren't doesn't mean they won't carry Star Trek Picard or anything else they make as a full series.

"Short Treks" is technically a separate series, isn't it? No guarantee that it would be on Netflix/Crave, same as with any other future Star Trek shows.

Not gonna lie, I never cancelled my All Access subscription after season 1 ended. I’ve been rewatching an episode here and there (out of order) whenever I feel like it trying to find details I missed. Some episodes are worse than I remember and others better.

And yea it’s 6 bucks a month. Doesn’t seem like a lot when I’ll spend that much on a coke, a taco and some skittles without thinking about it, but that’s just me.

As someone who enjoyed Discovery quite a bit, I had zero interest in this. I need at least an hour of content to sit through if it's Trek. But now I see that it's 4 episodes of 15 minutes so... even though they are unrelated Treks, I guess this ultimately may count as a single broadcast-length or longer episode?

A lot of people I know that like(d) Star Trek are barely aware of Discovery's existence. I often come to this forum myself to make sure it still exists.

That's great. I agree that the show is full of details that are there to be soaked up and enjoyed. Surely a rewatch is in order before Season 2 lands.

I think I'll resub a week before the new season starts, and watch all four in one go that Sunday night, as a sort of season 2, episode 0.

I believe it was said Discovery spinoffs are by default Netflix distributed. Perhaps they'll edit them all together for Netflix release.

I fully expect the Picard series to launch CBS All Access in the UK.

Agreed! Well, at least they can't complain about piracy if they're not going to show it/make a point of advising non US citizens on how to legally watch it. SIgh. Not a lot of marketing/sales sense going on here.
I reckon they're trying to get more money out of Netflix, who likely think their asking price is too high for what they would be getting.

I never got around to cancelling my subscription, even though I said I would when the DVD set was announced. And I'm glad I kept it: I've been watching TNG and other Trek series on CBSAA, because the autostart thing on Netflix was really starting to irritate me when flipping through choices.

I was initially unimpressed with the image quality of the other Trek shows on CBSAA, but it appears they now have the HD version of TNG up and/or made other improvements, because the image really pops now.

But anyway as to the short Treks, I'm very happy that we will have something toi tide us over and argue about until season two drops. Very interested in the Chabon episode and the Saru episode.
