2019 Releases

I hope this :vulcan:news is true I really we'll get new Trek books from all the different series to come out again next year.:bolian::beer:

Plus didn’t Therin have a similar ‘unnamable sources say we are close to an announcement’ moment a few weeks ago?

From what he said afterward, I'm pretty sure he was talking about CLB and Dayton mentioning unannounced tie-in projects they were contracted for recently. I feel like Kremlinology is kind of rude to do to someone's face (which is probably also why Therin didn't want to cite an author specifically, even about public posts on their blogs), so I haven't wanted to contribute potential interpretations but, well, since there's another rumor, and STLV is only a week and a half away, I was a little interested by Dayton's last monthly writing progress report mentioning two unannounced tie-in projects, specifying that they weren't Trek novels, and then mentioning a third tie-in that's being done on a crash-schedule after a terribly long delay in its commissioning, which fits with what the authors have talked about with how long the pipeline is from manuscript to publication if S&S wants to hit, say, early next year for the resumption of the line. This could also just be an artifact of the way he updates the same blog post every month, so the "It's not Trek" disclaimer might equally apply to tie-in number three (and four) in the list, but he just didn't move it when he added them to the post. Or it could be a subtle clue. Maybe if we ask nicely he'll switch from blogging to vlogging and we can watch to see if he blinks ROMULUS SUPERNOVA MINISERIES FEB TO JULY 2019 in morse code or something.

Of course, we've also got David Mack out here just saying it's solved, and official word is coming, but he's generally a little bolder on social media (I remember he tweeted out right after he wrote a big death in "Cold Equations." It was, of course, almost a year before I finally found out who. Well, I suppose there are still a couple candidates, but I'm pretty sure he was talking about about Choudhury, specifically). He only vaguely alludes to stuff we really aren't supposed to know about. In hindsight, I'm pretty sure there were a couple of tweets about Discovery before we even knew there really was going to be another TV show and it wasn't just a bunch of go-nowhere rumors.

My TV doesn’t support 4K. But at 40-inches I don’t think I would get the benefit of 4K——100 inches probably. However, as far as I can tell, neither does CraveTV.

Discovery was not streamed in 4K. It was streamed in 1080p. But on Netflix, it was streamed in HDR meaning better color. I don't know of any 1080p TVs that support HDR. But, most 4K TVs do.

I read on a Facebook Trek books group that an unnamed but "reliable" source says Trek novels will resume next year, with the currently contracted authors.

It was on Facebook, so it's gotta be true.

Does this mean January 2019 or some other time in 2019 (providing that this is true)?

The only thing it's promising is 2019. They can wait until December 2019 and still keep the promise.

Personally, I doubt we're getting anything in January and wouldn't be surprised if things didn't get going until at least the spring.

Don’t forget, but as different authors have pointed out, the publishing year goes from February to January. So January 2020 would still be considered 2019.

Assuming this is true, and I have no idea if it is or not, my gut feeling is that early 2020 is more likely for a relaunch of the novel line given the time needed for pitches, outlines, approvals, writing, more approvals, and book production.

The one caveat to this is if there are more Discovery novels, as CBS would, I think, want those sooner than, for instance, a new Enterprise novel, to reinforce the series in the minds of consumers, so it's possible, even likely, that Discovery novels would be on a "crunch" schedule.

Season 2 of Disco premiering in January, though no specific date has been announced yet. Assuming it premieres the first Sunday of the month, thirteen episodes will mean a finale on March 31st, or sometimes in April if it premieres on another Sunday in January. So, that being the case, I suspect there could be a Disco tie-in novel possibly sometime in March. Just personal speculation, and should be treated accordingly.

Or maybe a TOS novel that tie's into Discovery. As I recall, some of the authors have pointed out that in terms of the books, TOS still manages to be the "BIG" line in terms of sales.

It's true, TOS 5YM novels are the big sellers, but given that Disco is the series that is currently in production, its tie-in material is going to be getting priority. Indeed, this was already the case back in 2016, where someone, Dayton Ward maybe, commented on how anything not Disco-related was getting shoved aside by CBS's approval people.

Though any TOS-marketed Discovery tie in (meaning a TOS novel featuring or crossing over with Discovery) would almost certainly cause a timeline tangle. They wouldn’t want to introduce an element that the show is going to just outright contradict shortly thereafter.

Especially with the trailer that they showed at SDCC, it seems likely that they’d just straight up put a Discovery branding on, say, a novel of Pike in command of the Enterprise, instead of putting it under the TOS banner.

The Discovery novels so far actually fit better with the continuity than the show so it wouldn't be so hard to do.

I've not read it yet but I'm pretty sure the second Disco novel is a Shenzhou/TOS crossover with Pike and Georgiou and Michael and Spock teaming up.

As if we haven’t seen that situation before. Look at Federation/First Contact, 2 years.

That's the first Disco novel - David Mack's Desperate Hours.
The actual second novel is Georgiou and Prime Lorca at Tarsus IV. That almost sounds like a Tamarian metaphor.
