Big Finish to release Star Trek audiobooks

Big Finish is really great about coming up with exiting projects; there's so many of them that I really had to turn away, to save my pocketbook. I would love to see them do unabridged audiobooks of the older Trek novels; they're really good about trying different stuff.

I must say, Big Finish are GREAT at info control. First time I heard this was a possibility was Monday the 2nd. And they’re released Wednesday the 4th.

Good work!

This is nice and all, but I also would like original audio dramas from Big Finish a la Doctor Who. Imagine original stories from all six series narrated by their respective stars (Shatner, Stewart, Brooks, Mulgrew, Bakula, Martin-Green). Side stories narrated by the likes of George Takei, Brent Spiner, James Cromwell, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes.

I imagine it would be more British-centric, but the UK market loves Star Trek from what I can tell.

If BF were to do original stories I think they would be enhanced audiobooks like most of their Dark Shadows range.

The logistics and costs of full cast dramas would probably be too great.

If Prometheus does well Big Finish could use it to show they have a market for Star Trek, either as drama or audiobooks, hence why they're asking fans which other stories they want to hear.

CBS seem to work with IDW for new stories mostly, in comics. The books have been halted for some reason?!

New Frontier seems to be a popular answer as well as continuing the 24th century shows, either in new stories or adapting Destiny. There's a huge call for full cast, but Im not sure Big Finish could afford huge reunions like Blake's 7?! Also adaptations of things like the DS9 books and even New Frontier require certain actors to reprise their roles, even in guest roles - but how much would an author appreciate their work being rewritten for drama? Audiobooks are fine though.

Who they'd get is another question. I'm always surprised when Trekvets these days reprise roles, but we've had Renegades [fan film then independent film], Online [game] and that exhibition thing with Wesley and Tuvok on the Titan. It's worth noting that THR and Variety believe that CBS are about to sign Sir Pat to reprise Picard for a new TV project, believed to be a miniseries.

A hot topic over the years has been whether or not Shat would return as Kirk. Itr was mooted for Enterprise and the JJ Films but never happened. With Big Finish it would be far easier - there's the Kirk Autobiography of course which is all first person, plus if BF did all-new stuff then they could revisit the Shatnerverse? Work around Nimoy, Kelley and Doohan's absences by doing a storyline surrounding Spock's disappearance at Hobus - the books were also semi autobiographical so this could continue that.

Is that what they did with Stargate for a while? I remember seeing SG stories with just one cast member listed.
That seems the most likely way to start off, just as a cheaper way to test the waters for original stories.
If they were going to do full cast audio dramas it would like probably be something with just one or two onscreen stars and a bunch of new characters.
If they're not to busy, I could probably see Johnathan Frakes and Mirina Sirtis being up for a Titan series. It could also be a good way for Micheal Dorn to get to do the Worf series he was talking about a while back.

According to Cross Cult on their Star Trek Romane Facebook Page CBS apparantly only allows audio books and doesn't allow Star Trek audio dramas at all.

They used to allow somewhat more elaborate productions in the past, but that was quite a while back. When my work involved a lot of travel, my wife got a dramatization of the videogame Borg for me. If I remember correctly, It had the main character as narrator, some incidental voices including the Collective, and (most importantly) John Delancie as Q. It was a fun hour-long (or so) little drama. I think they did something similar with the Klingon videogame, featuring Gowron. And didn't I hear something about a line of Captain Sulu adventures that were similar? Anyone have some of those?

Of course, that would have been the '90s, a lifetime ago for policies. But it would be great if they licensed a professional company with a good track record like Big Finish to test the waters with some creative drama productions.

The Captain Sulu audiobooks they did were technically not audiodramas, because while they had multiple in-character narrators, there was no dialogue between them. The stories were presented in the form of various characters' log entries, reports, broadcasts, monologues, etc., getting as close as they could to telling dramatic stories within the limits of the multiple-narrator audiobook format.

I never listened to the Klingon audiobook or played the game, but I know the Borg one was less work than it might've seemed. Everything except the main character's narration and dialog was straight from the game, which may have made it distinct enough from a full-cast audio drama that was actually intended to be an audio drama. I mean, people do that on the internet for fun nowadays, recording videogames with silent protagonists and filling in the implicit dialog of the player character themselves.
