Hello everyone. I just have finished my own Fan Edit of Star Trek: Némesis, where i rescued the "Chateau Picard" scene and the deleted violation , and removing moments like the car chasing or some silly dialogues. After finishing this one, i tought about Star Trek V and i think is time for fans to move again and ask CBS/Paramount and William Shatner to produce and release a STAR TREK V DIRECTOR´S CUT. If i am not wrong, William Shatner has always supported the idea, but this idea was oficially rejected. With Star Trek returning to the top with ST: Discovery and the 4th Kelvin movie coming and maybe more, i think is the best moment to help William Shatner to get the opportunity of releasing a Director´s Cut as Robert Wise could. I think we should make a petition in change.org or something like that. What do you guys think?

The TMP DE doesn't fix the actual problems with TMP, so I don't get what you're saying.

I agree, and am delighted to find someone else who feels the same. ;) I guess it's more about perceptions? So many people say the DE is an improvement even though personally I just can't see it myself... the theatrical cut is fine IMO. So is TFF :D

I think a STV DC could allow Shatner to remove the weak VFX scenes, and replace them by new ones (no crazy CGI, something according to 1989), to show his original vision of the film.
-The "Rock beings" he planned could be added.
-New "God" scene
-Some shots of the Bird of Prey and Enterprise A replaced by new ones using the original model.
-Frame by frame restoration of the film, that would give new life to scenes like the "Enterprise over the moon" one or Yosemite´s landscapes.
-Removal of silly moments like Uhura´s dance or "Cat-girl" in Paradise City
-Deleted scenes?

well next year is the 30th anniversary of TFF. And theres a whole bunch of new tv and film Trek coming so maybe Paramount is quietly working on a DC for TFF (and blu ray TMP: DC - as next year is 40th) for all us old trekkies

I'm not in general in favour of director's cuts, if only because they tend to become accepted as 'definitive versions' of a movie when sometimes I think the creative choices made to cut a movie for its theatrical release are actually to the benefit of the film and were done for a reason ;) Also, there's been a tendency for re-edits to become the only commercially available version, so the (sometimes actually superior) theatrical versions can become lost to history forever. But I'm not opposed to them in principal as long as the unaltered version is always preserved, even for something as polarizing as Star Trek 5. I just disagree with any assumption that a DC automatically equals a better product. :p

Nick Meyer has the most mature view, regarding TWOK and TUC: he actually says while he's happy to provide an alternative version, it shouldn't ever be to the detriment or unavailability of the theatrical cut. Neither is "better" than the other, they're just different takes on the same material, and consumers should always be able to make their own choices about which version they prefer. :)

There's also a a tendency for "director's cuts" to have alternative takes, and not necessarily better ones than what were in the theatrical version either. That can come off as (or be) just a marketing ploy to create demand for double dipping.

One movie I was thinking of in particular when I was writing my post above was Army of Darkness. I've long held that Raimi actually delivered a better movie by being told to cut it down and the ending in the theatrical cut is excellent, and I find the alternative takes in the director's edition to be worse.

Same deal with the Lord of the Rings movies. 10-15 years ago everyone was all about the multidisc DVD editions that run 48 hours longer or whatever, but I think it's refreshing to come back to a theatrical edition and actually realize how little the additional material actually helps the movies. In some cases it makes them objectively worse. What was cut often got cut for good reasons ;)

George Lucas won an award in 1977 for the job he did editing Star Wars down to the great movie we ultimately got in theatres. Ironic, really.

Star Trek 5 is flawed, but it's a perfectly complete movie. :techman: I don't feel like adding things to it or changing a few visual effects will do anything to make it something it isn't.

The problem with TFF is that there is no Director's Cut. The Shat, as most know, never made his vision of this film. He was either talked out of doing things, or the budget wouldn't accommodate certain things, OR certain aspects of the production were unsuitable, like The Rock Creature outfit that proved so embarrassing. If Bill had the money to do a DC, he couldn't do anything about the narrative of the altered story. Improved FX would, however, probably be welcome by most ...

I can guarantee you Paramount doesn't have the money for any of this, and wouldn't be supporting of any crowdfunding campaign to support it.

Shatner did ask for a million dollars to redo the special effects before the "Special Edition" DVD came out but they said no. To be honest, nowadays they probably could do it for even less. And you know what, fans actually would probably eat it up. TFF is one of those funny movies that many consider the worse of the Star Trek films (certainly of the first 6) but many still have a soft spot for it.

But the special effects are horrifically bad, unworthy of a Star Trek film. Hell, some of the effects from the original series (the 60's effects) were better. I get what people say about directors cuts and so forth. But in this case it would be to fix something that really is broken. Let's face it. There's not sugar coating it. The effects are poor. Sure, there are other elements of the movie that are cringeworthy. But this is one they CAN fix. And probably not to expensively either.

As for the DE of TMP, I'm one of those that actually likes the DE better. TMP has always been my favorite Star Trek film. Robert Wise said himself he considered the original theatrical cut to be unfinished. When he did the DE it was the intent to fix it. They updated the effects in a number of shots, sure, made some corrections on mistaken scenes, but he also did some re-edits to fix the pacing. I actually liked the improved pacing more than the effects. I thought the movie flows much better now. But of course, that's just my own take. I'd love to see a Blu-Ray release of the DE (which the creators of the DE have said they have and can be done -- all Paramount has to do is call). I wouldn't be surprised to see that actually in 2019. Paramount loves to celebrate anniversaries and that would be a great way to do it. However, that being said, I would never take the original theatrical version off the market. People should be able to pick up their favorite version, whatever it is.

SMACK!

Wrong!

Marcia Lucas shared the Oscar for editing Star Wars with Paul Hirsch and Richard Chew.

Now I've got a smack mark on my face

Is that part of the reason George was taken to the cleaners during his divorce? I'm sure I recall reading somewhere that she was entangled up in the revenues somehow...
