Voyager fans.. are you disappointed about Discovery?

So it looks like we might be getting something post-Nemesis and Voyager after all: A Next Gen reunion series starring Patrick Stewart.

In total we're hopefully getting a new series, a new mini-series and a new animated series. Rumours are flying around about Khan on Ceti Alpha V, Pike and Spock on the Enterprise and something set at Starfleet Academy.

Add to that Star Trek 4 and Quintin Tarantino's movie project from Paramount Pictures, and there's more Trek coming than ever before. It looks like we may be skipping past late-90's Trek overkill to 2018 Marvel Universe ultra overkill.

To be honest, although I liked Voyager, I'm inclined to suggest Discovery has the potential to be a better show, it's first season was stronger than TNGs, DS9s or VOYs.

Yes, every series has had a weak first season. So far Discovery seems to have had a stronger first season but we'll see how it compares to any following seasons.

I think Enterprise was about as 'retro' as they needed to go. TNG, DS 9 and Voyager were actually really embraced given each had seven seasons to back up the interest in them. TOS is old. Done to death. Discovery is trying to suck off that and it is failing.
Failing so hard that CBS has enough confidence to consider 4 new shows. Wow, what a failure.

It isn't even close to the popularity TNG had.
And? I don't operate on arbitrary standards of what was popular then as to now. I don't want DSC to emulate TNG, or any other Trek program, any more than I wanted VOY to do so. I want it to be its own thing.

More than that, I want it to do well enough that CBS will do more programming.

Well, if you like it, then good luck to you. Everybody's entitled to their own opinion.

Personally I can't stand the sight of the Turtles and I also have a feeling that it's too much of current doom-and-gloom trends in it and I can actually live without that.

Most of all I want a new series in the 24th century.

It's not a matter of me liking it. It's a matter of wanting Star Trek to succeed so people can get more of what they want, like a 24th century show. Explain to me how DSC's failure encourages CBS to make more Star Trek? That makes no sense to me.

One reason I can think about is that they will finally abandon the retro ideas and go back to 24th century actions again. Otherwise we might be stuck with constant lame attempts to remake TOS for the rest of our lives.

But I also see your point about the risk of CBS totally abandoning Star Trek if DSC fails.

If discovery fails the execs will seenit as a lack of interest in star trek and not make ANYTHING.

For me the question is what's worse, bad trek or no trek? I enjoyed Discovery but for me it was not Trek

I agree here. If I have to choose between two worst case scenarios, I would prefer bad Trek instead of no Trek.

But there is a problem here too. If bad Trek continues for too long, people might start believe that this is the way it should be and then we get stuck with bad Trek forever which would be a slow suicide.

In fact, it's bad enough as it is with the ongoing doom-and-gloom trend in SF which makes most of the current series and movies unwatchable for me.

Well "bad trek" is an opinion. Some people feel Dicovery and even the JJ movies are good trek

Life is too short to watch something I hate in the hope tptb decide to make more. I'd rather see nothing than get mired in a slew of shows im not interested in because cbs thinks that is what I want to watch but that's just me.

I'm not saying Discovery is there yet but it isn't exactly what I'm looking for though my husband loves it so I'll be watching, when I look up from my laptop.

Yeah, the only reason i watched was because my "father in law" loved it and i wanted to have a thing we could share

Exactly what scares the s**t out of me. As I wrote before, we might get stuck with similar stuff for an eternity.

There are already too many depressing things when it comes to Star Trek. In the country where I live, Star Trek is not a big issue, rather a cult phenomenon. Star Wars is the big thing here.

But in the capital, they have this SF bookshop where they sell a lot of SF stuff, DVD:s, books and a lot of SF items. Every time I visit the town I also make a visit to the shop.

Once upon a time they had a section of the shop for Star Trek things of all sorts. But recently when I was in town on business, I could hardly find anything Star Trek related. The shelfs with Star Trek items had been reduced to a small shelf in a dark corner and there was not much available there. These are bad times for a dreamer like me. :(

I remember that the only reason I had to watch "Stargate Universe" was that the show had turned into a morbid joke between a relative and me.

I did watch the first three or four episodes of that series before I got bored and quit. But then a SF-fan relative told me that he had been falling asleep on two occasions while watching it and then it turned into a joke between us so I hade to start watching it again.

Every time we met on the street or in the local shop on a Friday evening it was like: "Do you know what it is today?" "Yes, it's that day again, time for a cozy Friday and a sleepy time time with Mr xxx and the other friends!" :D

"Mr xxx" stands for our nickname on the excellent actor Robert Carlyle's character in the series since Robert Carlyle is a dead ringer to a crazy person I used to work together with in the 90:s. The fact that Robert Carlyle's character in the series, Dr, Rush was a bit weird too (and the only good character as well) gave an extra touch to our twisted humor.

They are. They are adventures in space with social commentary woven in. Obviously, mileage will vary ;)

The odds are greater that if DSC failed Star Trek would be shelved rather than a 24th century show attempted.

Like DSC or hate it, it's making CBS money. It needs to do so in the current market for Star Trek to survive. Or, we can just be content with DVDs. Either way.

Discovery is apparently the most popular streaming show in the US, UK and Sweden. No wonder they're doing 5 more series'.

I'm surprised no-one is more excited about the possibility of Voyager characters showing up. Imagine Admiral Janeway as head of Starfleet Academy in that series...

I'd love to see Janeway, promoted Admiral, starring in one of these 5 series. She could be a Fleet Admiral - like Adm. Alynna Nechayev was in DS9 - and felt obliged to mentor a newly promoted Captain*, with a fairly strong and independent character, who made her/his own way.
Like this Voyager's adventure could continue in the post DQ era with Starfleet & Federation completly turned upside and a new vessel type Intrepid, a new crew and new enemies/allies. Tuvok, Seven, Miral, the Doctor or even Harry could intervene.occasionally.
-> I didn't mention Chakotay, Paris or Torres because their performers clearly said that they were not interested anymore by Sci-Fi/ST franchise or by acting.

And like that, Voyager's fans or just those who would a post-Voyager's serie would have a bone to bite.

I highly doubt Mulgrew would return except for maybe a brief cameo as she has her own series she currently loves playing Red on Orange is the New Black. She has a passion for this character and i doubt she would give it up.
