Rage Against the Discovery...

This meme has no future.

Several people have pointed to real life examples of testbed uniforms, and the British military have used different uniforms for different branches since forever. Despite the name, uniforms are often not uniform.
Yep---when I served we were constantly phasing in or out of something thanks to the "uniform board" which we all assumed had to change shit every 24 months or so to prove that a "uniform board" was needed.........we hated them.

It's okay to mock the TMP onsie though. :nyah:
I like the TMP onsie. :(

No, seriously, I see why it gets a bad wrap, but it made some sense to me as a kind of generic body covering suitable for a future in which people were not ashamed of their bodies in the slightest. It could have been much more utilitarian while still being all that though. Did it even have pockets, or space-velcro for attaching things? I don't recall, but I don't think so.

Some variations did have pockets.

Waits for someone to kick off at the captain's non canon rank braid....

HA!! Not exactly kicking off, no -- but it struck me as a bit of a missed opportunity to make this "prime" universe version look a bit different to the "Kelvin" timeline version.

As far as I can see, the DSC "Constitution" uniform (or whatever the heck it turns out to be...) is essentially the same basic design and pattern as the other DSC-era uniforms we've seen so far in Season 1, including the asymmetric front zip and collar and the stitched/quilted details on the shoulder and the top of the sleeve; the main difference would seem to be the use of obviously TOS-style colours. In that respect, although they might be similar in overall appearance to the updated Kelvinverse uniforms from ST:B, these are clearly consistent with the established DSC design. For what it's worth, I think they'll work quite well and are more like what they *should* have used for the movies -- but anyway, I digress...

I'm really not so bothered about the "canon" aspect of this in relation to a fifty-odd year-old TV show, as I'm very much in the camp that accepts that this is, after all, just a TV show and there is a need to update the production design for for a modern audience.

The use of the JJ-style thin silver cuff bands, however, seems a little lazy and perhaps not thought through as well as it could have been, given that those insignia were from the alternate timeline:
If we quietly ignore the variations in cuff insignia from the two original pilot episodes, there's no reason why the insignia for these uniforms in DSC couldn't continue to use the established TOS pattern of a "broken" line rather than a "thin" line for the ranks of Captain, Lt. Cdr and Lt. JG. They don't necessarily need to be the woven/embroidered gold guff rings from TOS and could still be iron-on metallic stripes but the whole point of Theiss' original design was to make the Starfleet cuff insignia look clearly different from contemporary naval cuff lace. The JJ-verse insignia rather fail in that respect and just make a captain look like he's wearing Lt Cdr insignia rather than something specific and unique to Starfleet.

Like I said, a missed opportunity -- but, in the grand scheme of things, a detail that would really only be noticed by Trek fans rather than the general viewing public

Yep, fair enough -- could be.

It's the pattern of the stripes that I was mainly thinking of rather than the colour.
