Netflix's new Lost in Space dropped a couple of weeks ago. And now it's the 60's again, Star Trek vs. Lost in Space! Except now we're battling very different modern interpretations of each. I also threw The Orville in there.

Personally I enjoyed Lost in Space quite a bit. I'd say it had a far stronger finale than Discovery S1, but I didn't enjoy the beginning or middle bits as much as I did the opening mystery or MU arc of Discovery. Orville is fun, familiar comfort food for this 90's Trek kid, but it hadn't wowed me yet.

Vote for all you like, and we'll see which one(s) fall behind...

I went with Discovery. I've only seen 4 episodes of The Orville and it was fun and I liked the characters but until i see more episodes I can't really judge it. Lost in Space did not do it for me at all and I was really looking forward to it. The first couple of episodes were alright but it was pretty laboured in the middle and I tuned out. With the exception of The Robot, Will and the Outstanding Parker Posey, I found the characters bland or annoying or somewhere in between. I'll probably give it another shot when i'm out of stuff to binge watch.

I loved Lost in Space - it's a slow burn - but it's actually more scientific and proactive/positive in attitude to problem solving than DSC.

My feelings about The Orville are that episodes like "About a Girl" do what Star Trek did better than Star Trek is currently doing it - it was a heartfelt message about being comfortable with your identity in a society that disapproves of your existence.

Loved Lost in Space. It delivered the mix of adventure, character work and, well, discovery I wanted from Discovery. Told a complete story while setting up all sorts of interesting storylines going forward. Will watch again, which I don't often do with serialized shows.

Orville is OK. Fine as pastiche. I can take it or leave it.

Did not care for Discovery. Its juvenile attempts to be more "adult" look worse now that LiS is here, IMO.

I can't get into The Orville. It find it more awkward than funny, but then I've never really been a fan of MacFarlane's comedy.

I'm two episodes into Lost in Space, nothing ground breaking, but it's pretty solid so far and a nice new take on old mateiral. Star Trek: Discovery has had ups and downs, but I think it has a lot of potential to grow into a better show. I voted for both.

Indeed! Lost in Space had a lot of technical problems, mostly in writing and the sripts. "Netflix bloat" comes to mind - a lot of the early episodes are unnecessarily long, and a lot of drama early on depended on characters not sharing their information with each other (which is usually lame drama).

But overall: That show had heart. Those mistakes are easily forgiven, because it's obvious the creators cared for it. And everything it created was amazing, way more than the sum of it's part.

Discovery by far.

I get a kick out of The Orville, though, which surprises me because Seth MacFarlane's stuff isn't my normal type of thing. But that's as far as it really goes.

I haven't seen the new Lost In Space and I barely watched any of the original version when they were showing reruns on the Sci-Fi Channel in the '90s. I did see the movie in the theater when it came out in 1998. I liked it, but haven't re-watched it in 20 years. I'm sure the new Lost In Space is great but (in general) I've never been into the concept of Swiss Family Robinson in Space. That's really more a comment about me than it is about the actual show itself.

Plus, I mean, most of the people here who love the new Lost In Space are people I usually disagree with. So that's not giving me a lot of incentive to go check it out anyway. If someone who knows my tastes thinks I'd like it, then I'd give it a look.

Orville is meh, and its fans are regularly insufferable to the point of turning me off from giving it another shot. I'm hoping the same won't happen with Lost in Space before I can give it a watch.

So, Discovery, by a mile.

Discovery by a mile...flaws and all.

The Orville is certainly not bad or offensive, it's just banal, derivative and awkward. I have watched every episode and will do so next season as well...but not with any level of anticipation or enthusiasm. It's a curiosity. Nothing more, nothing less.

I have never seen a single episode of LiS. I don't have any intention of watching the Netflix series either.

The best thing about Lost in Space is it didn't jump on board the grimdark train just because of Game of the Thrones and Walking Dead like Discovery did. Lost in Space had just the right tone for a space adventure. Discovery producers, take note.

The Orville makes me actively angry to watch it's so juvenile and low brow.

I don't know. Maybe an old bias. I just have no interest. So...I have no really good answer to that question.

Are you thinking I should check it out??

If you watched the first two episodes, and the opening of the third, I think you'd know if it's for you. The first ep, IMO, is the weakest of the whole run, but it's still pretty good.
