Spielberg says Indiana Jones' future could be with female lead character

Now, I have no issues there... Infact I'm pretty sure in either the comics of the Young Indy future bits the old Indy is mentioned to have had a daughter.

This is what is completely bonkers though.

Director Steven Spielberg says casting a female to play the iconic role of Indiana Jones could actually become a reality.

"We'd have to change the name from Jones to Joan," Spielberg told The Sun in a recent interview. "And there would be nothing wrong with that."

HIS LAST NAME IS JONES. WHAT THE **** is Spielberg smoking?

Yeah, the Jones to Joan part is weird, but weirder still is how the articles I've read covering this story don't bring that up!

Yeah, everyone knows Jones should be switched to Croft.

It's probably just a forced bad dad joke: instead of Indiana Jones now it'll be Indiana Joan, yuk yuk. I pride myself on how far back I can get my nephew to roll his eyes and shake his head with a bad groaner.

Also, and this was brought up on twitter (I didn't personally research it outside of a quick google, but it seems legit), Indiana Joan is a name used in at least one old porn movie. So, you know, even if changing "Jones" made any sense, you probably wouldn't want to go with Joan

It was also the nickname of a 95 year old Australian who was accused of stealing from actual tombs.

I'm all for a female Indiana Jones if done right, but maybe just either make her the original's daughter, or just change the actual first name (Arthur) to something more appropriate and keep the last name.

Her real name should be Diana. She's always stylish and fashionable, so she's In Diana Jones.

Or she makes movies outside the studio system, and she's Indie Anna Jones.

I'm actually cool with the whole thing. Her first name could be Joan and her last name Mahoney or something.

I bring up Mahoney because in 1985-1986 there was a short-lived cop show called 'Lady Blue' in which Jamie Rose starred as Katy Mahoney, a tough female cop. It was a good show and deserved a longer run.

Some people referred to the character as 'Dirty Harriet' and others 'Skirty Harry'. I have no doubt that some people meant those to be sarcastic and derogatory, but if you get past that there is a small amount of humor in it. :)

Indiana Joan and the "Spear" of Destiny.

:p

This is from the Sun, a notoriously unreliable source, and it merely cites ‘an exclusive interview’ without identifying it.

Spielberg strikes me as an intelligent man and I assume that he knows that the name Jones is applicable to men and woman, so why would a female Indiana Jones change her surname as oppose to first name? This just sounds like the sort of click bait that the Sun specialises in.

Yes, I think this sounds like a stupid joke. Somebody probably set him up for it by asking the question, and he just quipped back.

Even if they did make it about a female, I am sure they would just set it in the Indy world rather than change the actual Indy character.

I don't know why, but for some twisted reason I didn't envision this as a daughter, but rather as some form of regeneration.

If the Fate of the Atlantis had been remade as a movie, I could totally somehow see a young female Indiana coming out as that nazi was trying to turn himself into a ’god’.

We already have a female Indiana Jones, her name is Lara Croft.

But sure, whatevs. Can't be worse than those plans for Shia LeBeouf to take the reins.

Indiana Jones should be like 007 in that he's recast every so often, when the lead playing him gets too old, like Harrison Ford's been since before Kingdom of the crystal skull even threatened to be made ...

What percentage of the movie-going public is going to know about that stuff, though? :vulcan:

Google images has the dvd covers of some of those 'parodies'. :ack:

Priot to this Spielberg was committed to making one more film with Ford. I can't think of any reason for this to change other than him jumping on the #MeToo bandwagon.

Indiana Jones sounds like a perfectly reasonable name for a dashing female anthropologist/explorer.

hey, let's argue about it for literally YEARS with the worst people on the internet!
