Aaron Sorkin would bring back "The West Wing" with Sterling K. Brown as president

During a larger interview about Molly's Game, Aaron Sorkin said that if he brings back The West Wing, he would cast Sterling K. Brown as the president.

There's also a standing offer from the same network to reboot The West Wing, which Sorkin considers on occasion. When asked if he'd introduce a Trump-like figure in his fictional White House, he winces, arguing that the current president holds no appeal for him, fictional or otherwise. "Trump is exactly what he looks like: a really dumb guy with an observable psychiatric disorder," he says. Sorkin's preferred scenario, he tells me, would involve "Sterling K. Brown as the president, and there's some kind of jam, an emergency, a very delicate situation involving the threat of war or something, and [President] Bartlet [played by Martin Sheen], long since retired, is consulted in the way that Bill Clinton used to consult with Nixon." How he brings Allison Janney's C.J. Cregg or Bradley Whitford's Josh Lyman into the new scenario is where Sorkin gets stuck. So, for the time being, fans will have to settle for reruns.

I love this idea and it needs to happen. Now. I don't even necessarily need C.J. or Josh (or any of the other cast members) to return, although tying in Congressman Charlie Young into the story would be fun.

    Give it to me NOW!

The West Wing is my all time favourite show and would love to see it return.

Ah, but would they be able to "catch lightning in a bottle" a second time?

While nothing close to my favorite show, I generally liked The West Wing, absolutely couldn't stand Josh Lyman though.

Who knows. But I hope they could.

I liked Josh. I didn't like Toby towards the end though. Got too self-righteous and annoying.

Don't worry, Toby didn't like Toby by the end. But that was a completely different show runner.

Also I question how well Sorkin can write a show sober. However Allison Janney is busy with Mom, and Josh isn't needed either. Sterling K. Brown can be a Republican and have completely new people. You can have guest stars just pop up.

Sign me up:) I'd love a continuation though if any of the originals popped up, I'd probably prefer it as one-off advisors after all this time.

It would be hard to have the same amazing chemistry as the original cast and Sorkin either leaves a show early or it gets cancelled but dam I still want it to return.

Count me in. Doesn’t need to feature any of the original cast beyond the odd cameo, as far as I’m concerned. After all, it’s not like the Obama White House had too many ex-Clinton WH employees or the current Trump WH is packed with ex-Bush staffers.

Agreed, which is why I think Charlie (or Will) as a congressman would be interesting to see occasionally. My longtime preference (which I got from a friend) has been for a Congressman Charlie Young show, but I'd gladly settle for this idea with Charlie in a reoccurring capacity.

I like the idea but i would also hope they would also use what I am guessing is maybe 2 other presidents that would be in-between Bartlett and Brown. We know Jimmy Smiths would be one so maybe Gary Cole or Alan Alda as the other. C;J Craig could have a tv show on CNN and maybe Josh is Brown's Chief of Staff.

Santos's two terms would be up, and Josh has aged so much if they want to use him it will need to be 2-3 presidents after Barlett.

    Ah.

Well... I'd think better than others out there. Seen my share of bad shows.

Dang it. Uh no. It would have to take place in a different era of Republicans. Given how they are these days, we're already in a real reality show. Don't need to see another one on screen.

So the WW timeline had Santos elected in 2006 (took office in 2007) so if he served two terms then 2015 would see his replacement and lets say it was a Republican. The show could pickup in 2019 with a Democratic President once again ;)

It would be interesting because Democrats have changed as well. You could get 2 seasons out of exploring the conflict between Bernie Sanders liberals and Hillary Clinton Supporters.

It might risk feeling like an alternate universe where everything hasn't gone completely insane, but I guess that also might be comforting. Problem is the way the internet is I'm not sure the cultural homeostasis will be restored to the executive branch anytime soon even with a democratic president. He'd have to do something like have the president be a democratic celebrity not considered terribly qualified who ran a nasty social media campaign to get elected. Maybe a Kanye West type? Best democratic analogy to Trump I can think of.

Otherwise it'd be hard to make the conflicts of the show feel analogous to real political conflicts the way they did with a democratic president during the Bush era.

Obligatory Ridiculous Question: why not "President Charles Young"?

    Too soon for that?

If the same amount of time has passed through their universe as ours, then yes, far too soon.

Besides, I would like to see something different. A familiar character in a different setting would fit that need.

Not only is youth a question but I think the bigger issue is I think he would have more confidence in Sterling-K-Brown to carry a show in terms of acting ability. Brown is a rising star who and this show could be another step in his career advancement.

It's a small victory that I'm thankful that you didn't call Mrs. Clinton a liberal.

Yes the real USA is a shit hole that democracy has died in, so we need West Wing even more before we all die at 45 from not having food, shelter or health care.
