News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

You know, I don't think I've rated one 5 out of 5 yet -- they're all quite marvelous, but I'm saving that one. :D

It was inconsistent writing for a relatively inconsistent episode.

Sorry...it made complete sense as a story and in terms of character.

I'm sure the guy who "saved" her - and then held her prisoner under lock and key - thought he was a really nice guy. Major creeper, to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I'm not really seeing any inconsistency either. She has a gun, she uses it to defend herself. When she has the technology to defend herself, she uses less inhumane means.
Yep, I agree with that. I thought Claire was great in that. Penny Johnson is a fantastic actress and we've seen in that survival episode and she was the highlight of the holodeck episode as the crazed version!

Io9 had the title and description for the season finale in today's "Morning Spoilers" article.

Ed and Kelly seriously reconsider getting back together. However, while Kelly is on a mission with Isaac and Gordon to investigate the origins of an uncharted star, they suddenly crash-land on a planet from another universe. Kelly then makes a decision with unforeseen long-term consequences for the planet, putting Ed in a difficult position.

"Ed and Kelly reconsider getting back together." I don't know about that, it seemed to me their marriage was deteriorating and on its last legs anyway. Even if Kelly never hooked up with Darulio, I'm sure they would have been divorced soon enough anyway. Indeed, even when rekindling their romance was toyed with when they were stuck in the alien zoo, they were getting on each other's nerves after only a day or so together. So it should be damn clear to them both that their relationship is done. But that's my two cents.

Interesting how quick and easy it is to rationalize answers for things we "like" and be just as quickly dismissive of things we do not.

My whole point was that there was no "defending" herself. As far as I saw, this guy found an alien being (danger unknown, intent unknown btw) on his planet, saved her from more aggressive members of his species, protected her from contracting a weaponized biological pathogen, and even offered to get her antibiotics. In return, she panicked, murdered him brutally, shot a bunch of other people dead, and then lectured her kids on non-violence.

It was inconsistent behavior. Bad writing for an unlikable character. The rest of the episode was fine. But this was whack. If they were going for "mother will protect her young" vibes, they overshot it by a factor of ten.

You are not alone, the writing there was... let's say pretty tone deaf.

He saved her, but it was pretty clear it wasn't an altruistic act. Or else, he wouldn't have locked her in a little room denying her freedom.

It was for her own good. Because, you know, woman.

Which does bring up a interesting point. What if he did save her with no ill intentions but also comes from a culture were women are considered weak and thus he would be sexist and feel like he would need to protect her, never being exposed to concepts like feminism? We don't know what the aliens culture was like before the disease. Still I think Claire did the right thing because she has no way of knowing what his intentions are and even if he didn't mean to he did come off as a potential danger to her life and I think she did ask to be let go. Also she is a doctor and not a soldier so I doubt she has much fighting skills in being able to know some kind of kick or punch that would render him unconscious so she simply fought on instinct more than training.

Just finished Cupid's Arrow. Have to say it's the first one I really, really disliked. A poor man's version of Blood Fever. Won't be watching that one again as a rerun.

Well, if we're rating episodes, mine would be:
Old Wounds: 3/5
Command Performance: 4/5
About a Girl: 5/5
If the Stars Should Appear: 4/5
Pria: 3/5
Krill: 4/5
Majority Rule: 5/5
Into the Fold: 3/5
Cupid's Arrow: 4/5
Firestorm: 4/5

Also, just want to add, this show does a really good job on episode titles.

Cupid's Dagger....Dagger!
