WB's Justice League 2017 movie pre-discussion thread

I would also go to my local large newsagent and read pretty much every film magazine they had. The reviews might sway me for or against films I was borderline on (as they still do) but if it was from a director I loved, an adaptation of a book I loved or had a trailer I liked, I’d probably have gone anyway. Those are still usually the criteria.

Edit - not forgetting the late great Barry Norman from BBC’s Film programme.

I don’t get this “daring you to disagree.” The thing about everyone being a critic - as they are here, on twitter or Facebook - is that there’s such a variety of opinion. I sometimes but not always agree with some critics and some friends. I’ll put more weight on some reviews or word of mouth than others but will still ultimately make my own mind up. As far as I can see, there is anything but uniformity of opinion these days.

Best way to make use of critics is to test their likes against yours. A high degree of correlation points to a strong chance the guidance will be useful.

Or even if critics don't agree with your opinion, after reading a few of their reviews you can generally make an informed decision about a movie. The key for me in a review is always thoughtful, quality writing. I want to be entertained by a review as much as anything else. And Ebert was always entertaining.
 
One of the reviews (No Spoilers) highlights a fear I had about cramming so much in one film, especially a sub 2 hour one.

DC came late to the party, riding the critical and popular success of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy and smarting from the disappointing performance of Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns as they dithered, dallied and didn’t begin planning out the post-Dark Knight campaign until the MCU movie count was past the half-dozen mark.

The late start resulted in a rushed and ununified approach. Justice League arrives with three major characters who haven’t previously been introduced. As a result, this film has a lot of heavy background lifting to do - too much, in fact, for it to be able to tell a worthwhile story. 70% of the movie is set-up for future tales

I liked BvS but it also had a similar problem. WB have rushed large portions of the DCEU with lacklustre and constantly changing planning.

Rotten Tomatoes Leak

The reviews for Justice League dropped early Wednesday morning, with the Warner Bros.-mandated embargo lifting at 2:50 a.m. Eastern time. In the wee hours of the morning, no score appeared on the Rotten Tomatoes site, as was promised, but it seemed that fellow Fandango property Flixster was not informed. The ticket-buying app reportedly listed the Justice League Rotten Tomatoes score in its full glory, standing at a whopping 48%, and later 51%, certified Rotten rating. After checking the app later Wednesday morning, the Rotten Tomatoes score seemed to have been taken down, but the rating had already screenshotted and shared on Twitter.

It does sound like JL will probably be getting the DCEU's 3rd rotten score from 4 movies though probably higher than BvS & SS. More bad news for WB as the opening weekend is set to rake in just $110 Million. While this would top the opening weekend haul for Wonder Woman, it will be behind the $121 million posted by Thor: Ragnarok and way behind Batman V Superman $166 million. It will also be bested by Man of Steel $116.6 million and Suicide Squad $133.6 million. Globally, it’s expected to rake in between $325-$350 Million, which would be the second-highest debut in the DCEU to date but the production budget is rumoured to be almost $300 Million due to the reshoots.

JL will need some legs to make WB happy.

I have Movie Pass, so I’m still going to see it. Looks like a garbage fire though and based on the reviews, it is.
 
From the people who have seen it and didn't like BvS, they all say JL will definitely be a crowd pleaser.

The disconnect with the critics is the issue again.
 
Well personally I like reading movie reviews and find it valuable, since I usually find myself agreeing with the general consensus.

At this point, I think all I can do with JL is just hope it's not the awful, choppy mess that Suicide Squad was (which is the only DCEU movie so far that just did not work at ALL). And that we get another extended cut on blu-ray that improves the movie as much as the BvS one did.

And who knows, maybe this can just be considered a stepping stone to the much better JL2, much like the lackluster first X-Men movie paved the way for the better and richer X2.
 
So I went and saw it today. Could have been a lot better. Seem to flow okay. Much better than SS and BvS, but way below WW.

The second hints to what could be coming as Lex is out of prison. No date for the sequel, but if they go with the injustice gang as villains - what would be interesting, as movie of these team superhero movies have one big bad, and that would be a team of bad
 
Opinion regarding video clip posted earlier in thread if it doesn't get removed.

Lol from that clip it shows how powerful Supes is. Whats the point of the Justice League if he can curb stomp them without breaking a sweat ?. I mean if the big bad is a threat to Supes who just dismantled the League effortlessly, whats the rest going to do other than be a gooey mess on the sidewalk.
