WB's Justice League 2017 movie pre-discussion thread

Is it? I only got as far as the headline. If they're being kind, I worry about the film. But not much, I wasn't expecting good anyway, so it can't disappoint me! ;)
Justice League” is seamless enough that it’s hard to say where one filmmaker leaves off and the other begins. But the film’s flavor tilts more toward Whedon than Snyder, whose pop grandiosity is radically played down. Every moment feels like it’s been test-driven for our pleasure. As a piece of product, “Justice League” is “superior” to “Batman v Superman,” but it’s also about as close to generic as a sharp-witted high-octane comic-book movie can get. There’s hardly a trope in it you haven’t seen before.

Not gushing but not damning either.

Since reviews are coming out here's just a gentle reminder not to post spoilers without a spoiler tag, if you wish to do so there's another thread where that's allowed.

Just in case I'm ditching both threads till I see the movie tonight, see you on the other side. :techman:

Even though it's still early, it seems like the reviews for this movie are sadly being colored and shaped by "expectation bias" and not anything of real substance, and my hope is that DC and Warner Bros. don't fall into the trap of making rash decisions about the future of the franchise because critics still can't let go of what they expect a DC movie to be and let it succeed or fail strictly on its own merits.

It's the weirdest thing.

Till JL, the DCEU was ripped for not being like Marvel.

Now JL has quips, jokes, is lighter and has all the same frailities the Marvel movies have (cannon fodder armies, CGI, weak villains) and suddenly the DC movies are wrong for copying Marvel. I've noticed a lot of comparisons to the Avengers. With regard to the cast make-up and charactetization. Not the story.

Can't win for losing.

Why should we care what critics are saying? Are people going to continue allowing critics to dictate what they see and don't see/ Is this a case that most moviegoers don't have a mind of their own?

Hypocrisy, thy name is movie critics. Personally, I'm not that thrilled that WB is changing the franchise's style with this film.

Make a good film, get a good review. It's not Rocket Science.

Wanna bet? I've seen some really good films get shitty reviews and shitty films receive good reviews. People seemed to think that film critics are the best source of knowing whether a movie is good or not. I learned a long time ago that they're not.

Why so defensive? You’re ridiculously invested in the idea that people shouldn’t consider reviews before deciding whether or not to see a film. Some people are interested in reviews, some aren’t. As has been stated elsewhere in this thread, due to factors such as time, money and taste, people are not obliged to see every film that is released and may wish to take various matters into consideration before deciding to see them.

The only person who seems to think that critics “dictate” what people will see is you. For me, this film is pretty much critic-proof. Unless the reviews were Fantastic Four (2016) bad, I was going to see it. Seeing as I liked the critically mauled BvS & Suicide Squad but disliked critical darling Wonder Woman, these reviews are no guarantee of how I’ll enjoy this film but I’m still curious to see the feedback.

If you don’t care what critics think, don’t click on the links. Simple as that.

For me, it's not so much that I care about the critical reviews as I do the fact that they feed into a narrative that, at some point, is going to end up harming a film franchise that I'm wholly invested in and that I want to see continue.

Indeed. My friends and I will be going to see it and will be disappointed if the series does not continue.

I’ve a suspicion - nothing more than that, and I may well be proven wrong - that WB will retool their series over the next few years. People can dismiss the Affleck-leaving stories as clickbait but he has been at best non-committal over the last few months. Then you have the Joker origin film that won’t feature Jared Leto, while it’s far from clear that the planned Batgirl or Nightwing films will be in the same continuity as the current series.

If anything, it’s looking like they may take the same approach as their standalone animated movies - some may feature the same actors in the same roles, some may be direct sequels but they will not necessarily all exist in the same overall continuity.

I'm not worried. The movie sounds like it will be fun and a crowd pleaser. As long as families enjoy it, it'll make a lot of money and this sounds like one kids will enjoy more than MoS and BvS.

BvS and Suicide Squad were savaged but I really enjoyed them. No way am I missing out on Justice League because of more of the same.

For me, as someone who has only enjoyed Wonder Woman (a lot!) so far, I have no problems with them figuring out how to make good movies BEFORE figuring out to make a connected universe and starting over. It doesn't have to even be a total reboot. Just make movies with these great characters, cast whoever you want, and connect them or carry on from there if they're good and warrant more.

Kind of like the DC animated movies that don't cast the same actors from movie to movie and they just tell whatever stories they want to tell.

When Nolan's Batman trilogy ended, my hope was that it would open up the door to getting stories, not franchises. That we could get the public to a place where they could accept different actors, and incarnations of Batman (or any other hero) and let directors tell complete stories. You want Batman to die in this one? Great, do it. Because we all know they'll just do another anyway, so why not embrace that and make the best use of it? Then the shared universe concept came in and took over. However I'm hearing that DC will be doing "Elseworlds" films that will allow for one off's, which will entice bigger name talents in front of and behind the camera to do films since they won't have to worry about being locked into a franchise for a decade.

I have some fears that this could be the Episode I to Episode II type of situation. After the uproar over Episode I, Lucas listened to the fans, and made most of the changes that they requested. He also ended up making whole new problems, and the movie was bad for its own reasons.

First you think we shouldn't base our money spending on advertising. Now you say we shouldn't base it on critics. So how should we decide what to see???? By the title?

Yes there are enjoyable movies that were panned by critics. For me, BvS is one of them. However, the things the critics said about the movie were accurate. It was poorly paced, EXTREMELY weirdly edited, and rather dry. It took multiple viewings for me to get what Snyder was going for, get over the awkward style and editing, and finally sink my teeth into it. That shouldn't be a requirement for enjoying a movie - too much of an investment for the GA to make. Meanwhile WW was paced and edited like a normal movie, so people can actually watch it the first time, not be distracted by weird lighting, and jump cuts, and guess what - people liked it! And so did critics!

I don't think people should base their entertainment and spending decisions on critical reviews either. I also don't think trailers should be the SOLE determinative factor in making such decisions.
