When I saw the original promo for the DSC ship design, I was unimpressed. However, now seeing it in 8 episodes and liking the spinning saucer section, I think the Discovery is a very cool looking ship. Anyone else feel the same way?
Overall the Discovery design is, to me at least, acceptable. There are literally only two things I would personally change about the ship that wouldn't alter the design too much. First, I'd integrate a cylindrical "Constitution-style" deflector housing into the front of the engineering section and second, I'd raise the nacelle pylons slightly to make it more in line with later ship designs. The nacelles don't need to be elevated much, maybe to just underneath the saucer plane but leaving them parallel to the engineering hull just doesn't appeal to me.
I like the design of the ship because I liked the Planet Of The Titans Enterprise concept art. I wouldn't have liked it as a refit Enterprise. Way too different to be the same ship in any way (the refit was fairly different, but I could imagine a lot of the original still being in there somewhere). But as a new class of ship, no problems.
It was referred to (exactly once) as being for "excess energy cavitation". I guess it churns up the unused spore mojo into a lovely whipped dessert topping. I was hoping the spinning saucer sections were part of an even more secretive "pizza cutter" drive system, allowing Discovery to attack Papa John's restaurants instantly from anywhere in known space.
I think it may have looked better with the saucer layout we saw in the teaser trailer and making the grille portion spin as opposed to the surface of the hull. At least the grille would look more like a conventional flywheel than having the surface plates of the hull spin. Also, if the surface of the saucer takes damage and can no longer spin, does that mean they're stranded or confined to warp only?
I like the finessed version of it that they are using in the series. the original POTT concept art bothered me. The flat wide version that is. I liked the taller narrower version because it evoked the same balance of the TOS E, and it had a sense of speed. I'm glad that they refined the design even further from their original "thrown together" teaser variant. Those long engines look great. I love the shot of Discovery maneuvering away from the sun, and then jumping to warp. Very sleek. I would assume so... But that's no different than taking damage to the nacelles and not being able to jump to warp.
I have to admit I also prefer the Constitution class model better, but the Discovery design has grown on me.
Most of the time the whole ship is not shown. That helps. The spinning of the saucer has to be the dumbest idea for this show so far.
I don't quite love It, but I like it. They've got a very cool look for their version of Starfleet. Darker hulls, bladelike saucers, unique nacelles and bridge windows.
you seriously haven't at least seen the gifs floating around? as much as i want to hate it, i'm always like:
The preview clip a year or so ago made the ship look hideous, in large part to the nacelle placement and the godawful graphics. Since then, the way they've made the nacelles longer and extend behind the pylons help make Discovery much, much more attractive. That said, it looks like a tank in motion and certain angles aren't nice at all. There's been a couple of nice beauty shots (nowhere near enough though), this one is my favourite
Sadly that's pretty much the only nice beauty shot in 8 episodes so far. These two are ok I suppose...
