I get that it's out of respect for the artist that they allow him to name the ships and classes, and offscreen class names are not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, but John Eaves' hard-on for all things American aerospace related is really getting out of hand when Alan Shepard's name supersedes Yuri Gagarin's as the first and name ship in the class. Why would a non-American space agency 240 years in the future give preference to the second astronaut in space over the first one?

Yeah, that jumped out at me, too. Feels like a bit of a slap in the face.

...And not the irresponsible drug use?

Actually that's a good comparison for Burnham's mutiny, except that Archer didn't care to dredge up the... Wait, were the future versions of T'Pol in Twilight and E2 off their tits too?

Earth was destroyed in one of those timelines, and T'Pol was Drunk on Trellium D through out all.

Not really a fan of this one. The whole deal with the planet felt lame, Saru was made to look like a massive chump, the Stamets stuff was dropped too quickly, Burnham/Tyler melodrama made me roll my eyes and the Klingon plot wasn't handled too deftly.

Positives: the attempt to save the Gagarin; ending was cool and set up the "fall finale" (sigh) nicely; shades of Errand of Mercy in the plot.

Keep in mind this was supposed to be the last episode before the break, up until after the first 2 episodes were already released (well after Mack's tweet).

I think what may have happened was it was originally one episode (by Beyer), then re-edited so the second half was part of episode 9. That would also explain why this one is shorter.

According to After Trek, the next episode is written by Erika Lippoldt and Bo Yeon Kim (and Ted Sullivan said it's as good as Balance Of Terror, take from that what you want). So it wasn't 1 episode split into 2. Instead it seems that for some reason a lot of this episode was left on the cutting room floor.

To clarify, I think the second part of 8 was incorporated into 9, not that 8 was expanded into two full episodes. So the original Bo Yeon Kim episode is still there - which originally would have been the beginning of the "second chapter" of season 1 - and is now more of a teaser for chapter 2 combined with Beyer's conclusion of chapter 1.

Yeah, I suggested this earlier in the thread. It seems reasonable given what we know.

The question now is where does that leave the the mid-season finale. Did they extend parts of it and split it into one weak story (this one) but we still have a great one to look forward to? Or, did they split one excellent story into two weaker stories?

I'm hoping they had too much good story for one episode but not quite enough for two. But, I'm puzzled because they edited out what sounds like great content from this episode "for time."

We'll know soon enough.

I just forced myself to watch the episode. I can't even get up the energy to rant. It was a crap episode, with mostly crap characters. I hope Stamos dies in a very painful way before the season is over. Burnham is now just here to have a romance because obviously that's the story they're going to do with her. Lorca is ok but nothing special. Really, if everyone but Tilly die I'll be fine with it. I'm not even that big a fan of Tilly (party girl Tilly from last episode really soured me to the character), but she's the only semi-main cast member who isn't an ass or just boring. Havingseason 2 start with Tilly waking up on a real starship (that has actual lights and real Star Trek uniforms and doesn't have terribnle interior design) with the whole first season being a dream is really the only way to save STD at this point.

Oh, and the "klingons" are still the worst aliens in the entire franchise. Nothing much elkse to say about their sections. Overall this episode was a bit less insulting then the "Harry Mudd is a literal deity" episode from last week, but that is a low bar. I rated this episode a 3/10.

Yeah, that jumped out at me, too. Feels like a bit of a slap in the face.

It’s like having a spaceship named “Neil Armstrong” but the class is named after one of the dudes on Apollo 15.

Gagarin wasn’t just the first man in space, he also did the first orbital flight. (Shepherd’s flight was suborbital.)

Gagarin is also vastly more recognized around the world. The USSR used to send him to a bunch of Eastern Block countries and India for parades and recognition. For millions of people around the world, Gagarin was the personification of space flight.

...And not the irresponsible drug use?

Earth was destroyed in one of those timelines, and T'Pol was Drunk on Trellium D through out all.

I always thought that was rather odd. Not so much the drug abuse, but the fact that she got high off some spaceship insulation material. Instead of Klingon Cocaine extract or Palladian Methoheroin or something, she got hooked on insulation material, like some Brazilian street kid huffing glue.

If anyone is interested, we just posted our weekly cast on this episode of discovery, this one contains an interview with an actress from episode three. The link to listen is on my profile page here, for soundcloud , we're searchable on iTunes as well. It was a pretty interesting interview.

The problem with using the Klingons is twofold:

1: They’re hard to make interesting and it’s even harder to avoid turning them into one dimensional cliches.

A 9th century Viking or a Moslem Pashtun in today’s Afghanistan or the tribal areas in Pakistan, would understand the honor concept perfectly, and understands why it’s better to sacrifice your life or your child’s life, rather than to lose your honor. But for people living in a modern, Western culture, it’s just too far from their frame of reference, and quickly becomes silly.

2: The Klingons have been used so much, it’s hard to do a prequel show, without constantly bumping into canon and fanon. It’s an even bigger problem, since the Klingons got a sorta goofy portrayal in DS9 and TNG.

But no worries! The writers got this, no? We’ll just redo the Klingons! That opens a whole new can of worms. Such as: “What happened with the ridges?!” And “Why do they look different?!”

Of all the people I’ve watched the show with, none of them realized right away they were Klingons, and all of them wondered why they looked different.

A new race/enemy would probably have been a better idea. With Klingons in the background occasionally.

Going back to actual thoughts on the episode:

(1) USS Gagarin is super schmexy ship
(2) Hooray for Lorca doing rescue work and not just being hyper-focused on victory
(3) Sux that the super schmexy ship was borked by the Klinks
(4) Thumbs up for the junior officers on the bridge in the opening battle
(5) Planet of Harmony is... okay? Guess IDIC applies here.
(6) L'Rell-velation about Kol being a ho... we already saw the lead-up to this in an earlier episode so that makes sense
(7) Admiral getting her cranium thumped around sux but good attempt by L'Rell to get them out
(8) Aliens of Harmony from Planet of Harmony trying to harmonize the inharmonious aliens from far away... saw that one coming.
(9) Saru losing it just tells me more of what I already suspected: he's really not the best choice for leadership
(10) Any episode with good ships and pew-pew action gets an up vote from me. I'm in it for the ships 1st and everything else 2nd. :P

Couldn't find anything in Memory Alpha about it. I don't think this is correct. There may have been some mention of it in one of the books, but the short answer to your question, I think, is, "it's not." :)
I guess the data in my head was corrupted and I was thinking of something else, and/or my memory processor needs an upgrade. In any case, I suppose Spock was a first something at some point. :)

That's a really cool shot of Airiam. It's nice to get a clear, detailed look at her. She's definitely one of the bridge officers I'm interested in knowing more about at some point.
