I don't like that they're all named after Americans.

Agreed. But at least now I know that the design that I love is (called the) Shepard-class USS Kerala (NCC-1255).

 

I am American and I agree too. Should be more representative of other Earth cultures as well.
I adore that a USS Shran existed though. Hope somehow they can squeeze in a bit role for Jeff Combs on Discovery.

Magee had an American father and a British mother and flew in the Royal Canadian Air Force. So, everyone represented there is an American.

Seeing that list, I can think of several names I would have chosen. For instance, I would have chosen Lydia Litvyak. According to Wikipedia,



Lydia Vladimirovna Litvyak (Лидия Владимировна Литвяк, (August 18, 1921 in Moscow – August 1, 1943 in Krasnyi Luch), also known as Lilya, was a fighter pilot in the Soviet Air Force during World War II. With twelve solo victories and four shared kills over a total of 66 combat missions, over about two years of missions, she was the first female fighter pilot to shoot down an enemy plane, the first of two female fighter pilots who have earned the title of fighter ace, and the holder of the record for the greatest number of kills by a female fighter pilot. She was shot down near Orel during the Battle of Kursk as she attacked a formation of German planes.

 

So not only is Admiral Anderson already so stereotypically militaristic it isn't even funny, his flagship belongs to a class that was named after a US Navy officer.

The guy really is Admiral GI Joe.

I'm not worried about the names - I can always pretend that there was an alien whose name sounds awfully like that of an American.

What I worry about here is how pitifully small the classes must be. NCCs 1648, 1661 and 1683 all come from different classes? "Only a dozen like her" isn't much of a distinction for the Constitution class, it seems...

It is interesting how most of the ships resemble the Miranda class, aside from the one that's kind of Constellation-like with four nacelles. I guess that was a fairly common design for midsize ships in the 23rd century. The Shenzhou was along similar lines, but also looked like it could be a descendant of the NX class. It's nice to get a new sense of Starfleet design lineage in this era. I think some of the Kelvinverse 2250s ships are also along such lines.

And, interestingly, we don't see anything that really fits what we've always thought of as the standard Starfleet design -- saucer, secondary hull, nacelles. I guess the art department is trying to avoid anything too much like the Enterprise so that it remains unique, similarly to how DS9 always avoided using the Sovereign class.

 

I'm sure they're deliberately avoiding the use of any TOS ship classes to get around the problem of how advanced, and therefore anachronistic, they'd have to look. Easier to come up with a whole new ship class, then you don't have to care what it looks like.

 

Except you cannot conclude the number of ships from those registries.

 

Why do the registry numbers have to all be consecutive? If they were producing Mirandas and Excelsiors for the better part of a century plenty of other classes would have come in between individual ships of those two classes, so there would be gaps between registry numbers of ships of the same class, and the number of ships produced could run into the hundreds.

 

We never could do that even before DSC existed.

AFAIK, they just didn't want to confuse viewers or dilute the image of their shiny movie ship. The same reason there was never a Connie in TNG.

 

There almost was.

The first time TNG ever uses the phrase "Constellation class", the character speaking the name - IIRC, it's Geordi - actually says "Constitution" (the Stargazer was originally supposed to be a Constitution-class ship) and the later name was overdubbed. In fact that's why they picked "Constellation", because it sounds so much like "Constitution".

 

I know. And the reason why they changed it was the one I stated earlier.

 

The Nimitz class is one of my favourites now. It does sort of remind me of the basic T3 heavy cruiser in STO, but I like this one just a bit more.

Again, to be honest, the only "new" Fed ship design I don't like is Discovery's.

 

Paramount didn't want the Sovereign class used in a TV show, feeling there had to be a movie exclusive ship in order to get people to the theatres. I remember Ira Behr fought tooth and nail to get a Sovereign class ship into the fleet in WYLB but Paramount wouldn't budge fearing no one would see the next TNG movie in theatres. Ironically, no one saw that movie in theatres anyway.
