For some reason quotes aren't working for me.

I don't think this show has a main character. I think CBS used that as a selling point. "Hey watch our show, the main character is a woman and black" but I think it's pretty clear that she is no main character and there really isn't one. Which is good.

I think her character is strong, very strong for the show and strong on it's own. She herself is complex and I think the writing is bearing that out.

Rational of thought, impulsive upon action. Empathetic, but with a strong sense of superiority. I love it and her for it. But this episode was definitely a group effort so to speak.

I would say they've pretty much all been about two characters.

The one exception might be DS9, but when you get right down to that even it was mostly Sisko and Kira's story.

This dialogue is execrable - expository, and prolix when it's not on the nose.

I was a little annoyed that Lorca and Tyler managed to subdue the two Klingon guards. Aren't Klingons supposed to be super-strong or something? They broke their necks, somehow. I mean, that was not a well-planned escape plan. They might be well-versed in fighting techniques, but the Klingons like hand-to-hand combat as well, I believe.

Star Trek has a history of impossibly laughable escapes while desperately outnumbered and outmatched.

Why stop now?

A simple medical scan will reveal if he's a Klingon, so it's not like he can hide on the ship forever.
Well, we've learned in this episode that Captain Lorca has been able to refuse medical treatment for quite a while, so it is possible that he will get away with it for a good amount of time if indeed he is a Klingon spy.

Archer was the greatest human explorer of the 22nd century and one of the earliest Presidents of the new Federation. Sure, he got beaten up by every bipedal species known to exist at that time and even some single-celled lifeforms, but those weren't weighed in the criteria.

And Georgiou made a Starfleet delta in the sand, which probably took a lot of work. She leapfrogged right over Erika Hernandez with that maneuver.

I seriously don't know how you can say that, since triads were more common. TOS was Kirk/Spock/McCoy. In TNG it was Picard/Data/Worf. DS9 was such an ensemble that after Sisko I don't think any one character stood out in terms of screen time. Voyager by the end was Janeway/Seven/The Doctor. Enterprise, I guess it was Archer/T'Pol/Trip.

In TOS they weren't that strong. The Enterprise crew did well against them in the Trouble With Tribbles. (Well, maybe not Chekov ;) )

Burnham isn’t horrible but they haven’t done much to develop her as a character.

Of the other characters, I love Captain Lorca, like Stamets and his husband, the doctor, and Tilly is growing on me. I miss Georgiou. It was a real shame that they killed her off.

Saru is just so ugly that I find it hard to watch him when he’s on screen. The neck tentacles make me squeamish. He looks like something out of a horror movie. The actor is fine and the character is likable, as long as I’m just listening to him. I also find the Klingons hard to look at.

Sadly, I find Sarek and Harry Mudd more interesting than Burnham and would gladly sacrifice her airtime so I could watch more of all of the above, except Saru and the Klingons.

One more thought - I'm surprised they didn't bother with the obvious "Lorca reconnects with his crew" scene near the end of this episode. Maybe it would have been just too many quiet closing scenes in a single outing?
