I didn't notice this at the time, but how often did Picard speak before the confirmation that a communication was established..?I love the opening of this - "Open a hailing channel / I haven't done it yet."
Probably a lot of times which is why this joke really hits home.

Alara might be my favorite character on the show.
I already have the first chapter online of what may be the first fan fiction for the show (over at fanfiction.net), and the Krill are a key part of the story. I do some world building on the Kirll for Seth.

It's hilarious. Even after she opens a channel, Mercer wants to double-check before talking again. There is a scene in another preview where Mercer, looking like a Krill, identifies himself as Chris. Chris the Krill.

The communications bit was good. I think overall the show has actually done a pretty good job of giving us jokes and humor like that that arises naturally out of the situations.

I've got to say, this show continues to really, really, impress. It's hard to not compare this show to Star Trek when it's so obviously what it's a tribute to/inspired by but as I have found myself saying after the last few episodes, "That's the best episode of Star Trek I've seen in almost 20 years."
There were some "good" episodes in the later years of Voyager and even in Enterprise but none that really motivated and lifted me, made me feel good about humanity and just gave me that feeling I got when I first watched TNG. And "Discovery" just isn't clicking with me. It's just too dark and seemingly opposed to everything I think Trek is, "stands for" and should be. If people like it, that's fine and great. Who am I to argue? People like Voyager and DS9 and I think both of those series have problems, the latter problems similar to what "Discovery" has in going into stories and themes that "go against" what I think Trek is about.
This show? It's really doing something and really makes me think and feel in a way I've not since the days of TNG. Some aspects still don't work, mostly the humor and anachronisms (there's absolutely no reason, at all, why someone living in the 25th century would know about a 20/21st century rental-car company that most people TODAY probably are barely aware of) but the heart of it really works.
Dealing with a sort of "no-win scenario" here and the point made at the end that by saving the children, by killing the whole rest of the crew, they may have made enemies of/radicalized a group of children. It'd be interesting to see where this goes or how it develops. (If it does, rather than it just being a one-off episodic thing.) Good episode.
Not a fan of MacFarlane's other work but he's really got something here and is making a fan. (Still not going to like/watch Family Guy, Ted, or Million Ways to Die in the West.)

I've been curious what it would be like when we got an episode that was not written by MacFarlane. Noticeably the humor was more of the "parody" type which seems to be a direction that MacFarlane has not been as interested in. Stuff like communications, the fire control panel, alien uniforms and so on. There seemed to be more humor in general and I thought it was integrated well within the episode.
Another episode without a pat resolution which is an interesting change from its TNG progenitor. Ed did not convert the Krill to his way of thinking by the end of the episode, not even the female he had bonded with. Her comment about the children was not comforting either.
I dislike the whole notion that Alara intimidates all her boyfriends' masculinity. It feels really outdated not even in the future of the Orville but even in our world today. It's hard to believe that such an attractive and nice person would turn away so many suitors just because of their chauvinism. Then again, some of the things you see people say and do these days are pretty backwards it seems...
When did Kelly Hu become an older woman? That can't mean that I'm getting ol....nahhhh!
