Is it me, or is the show LITERALLY insanely dark?

I noticed that somehow, because Netflix streams this as a HDR show, the settings for my tv were slightly different than my standard settings, the backlight was a bit darker. Turned it to the normal settings, but still, it's incredibly dark. The hallway scene in episode 3, and the space scenes are just very dark to me. I'm gonna fiddle with the settings a bit more, but I was wondering...

Am I the only one, or do others feel this show is filmed very dark?

Others certainly have said it, so you're far from alone, I haven't noticed any issues myself. Discovery seems fairly brightly lit in general, away from the Bridge level.

It is dark, but not too dark. Look at daredevil as an example of insanely freaking dark.

Also, ya notice the bridge is bright or brighter when the captain is not there and they gave a reason for that

Lighting is one of those aspects of filmmaking, like camera angles, which I can't say I notice unless it's pointed out. I was busy enjoying the set design and didn't really think about lighting.

Color wise, it's a tad dark, but not distracting to me.

Mood wise, yeah, it's pretty freaking dark. LOL

I've noticed this in other productions of recent years, such as The Wolverine. Dark atmosphere does not mean that the visuals need to be literally lacking in visible light to the point that you can't even tell what's going on! :wtf:

At this point all the Klingons have to do is hack all Federation ships, instantly turn the lighting up to "normal" and they'll have all the oppertunity they need to destroy most of Starfleet while they panic.

there are odd issues with this show, the darkness, and the color blue, that I've never noticed on my TV before.

It's been fine for me (Netflix & panasonic tv or laptop) though I suspect if I were to be watching on my (samsung) tablet, it would be rather too dark.

I for one love the fact that we have cinematic lighting now! There's so much contrast, so when it's dark, it's dark. Love it!

It could very wel vary with differents brands of tv ofcourse. I'll fiddle with my settings a bit more. :) Thanks for the input guys!

haven't tried on my imac, but on our tv in the darkest of dark scenes, there is this odd, blue streaking,

Yeah, it's dark. More futur-y if it's dark with blue lights, you know.

That's the POINT of lighting. You're not supposed to notice it. You're not supposed to think about it. The DP does the thinking so it conveys a mood and tone and helps tell the story.

Not too bad imo - Daredevil season 2 was so dark when I first watched it on Netflilx it drove me mad! It was much clearer when I bought it on blueray I always hated the Next Gen's' 'Ocean liner' set and lighting so it doesn't bother me...

Generally I don't have a problem with the lighting on the show, but the scenes on the Glenn in episode three were almost too dark to see something for me. But then again, I watched it Monday morning with daylight pouring through the windows.
