I get the feeling both the federation and the Klingons will represent the current political atmosphere in the world. The Klingons with their crazed paranoia and fear of loss of their individuality. The Federation meanwhile will probably have a population that's increasingly prejudiced when it comes to Klingons, especially the main character.

Gotta say this about Discovery-- prefaced with the fact that Worf has always been my favorite character, the Klingon stories always among my most favorites-- but after seeing the Klingons in just two episodes, the paper thin "warrior race" we've seen in TNG/DS9, across 14 seasons, no longer seems that interesting.
Rewatching some DS9 this week, and while it's all still wonderful, the Klingons now just seem like angry humans with a sense of honor, while Discovery's Klingon's truly come across as alien, with a unique and inhuman culture.

For me it's ok that they reference through Klingons whatever they want, but I don't want to see this Klingons being completly different than those in other shows. What Discovery Klingons are for now missing is some honor, something for viewers to relate them to the Klingons we know.
Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't their a pretty substantial case of institutionalized racism in the USSR? Im positive they had a "we are Russian! We are the best! No one compares!" Attitude. If that's the case, it's really NOT THAT BAD. Im pretty forgiving of retcons as long as there is some actual work and effort put into it. Like augment virus for example, I kind of shrugged at that. Was it a retcon? Yes, but boy I have seen ALOT worse retcons in my time. And im only 27 lol
The Klingons are clearly an allegory for Conservatives. I mean just look at the striking resemblance to Margaret Thatcher.
I *am* a white Republican, and I take no offense at how the Klingons are being depicted here. It's just a TV show, after all. A bit of allegory never hurt anyone.

You so picked the wrong person to pull that card on!
If they were it was more subtle than what you might have seen in season 2 of "Supergirl." I think it's Starfleet that is going to represent America were you have two sides dealing with how to treat the Klingons who will represent refuge's and Muslims. The klingons and their many houses might mean you have some houses that represent the terrorist and other houses that represent refuge's and are basically the victims of those other houses.
With Starfleet or the Federation I think Lorca might represent a Trump supporter and Burnham will eventually represent the left and lines will be divided among the crew as to which side they are on.

I think the Klingons are supposed extreme xenophobes in this series, compared to the more open Federation.
We have far right parties across the West and groups like ISIS that are also xenophoic, I think the Klingons represent something broader then Trump.
I also don't think this a radical change for the Klingons, this is just a more extreme version of the warrior Klingons from TNG.

No. Mostly see them as sad. They talk a great game about their guns and revolution. But, at the end of the day, they like their cushy lives and have no real stomach to fight a war.
I am using those words in different contexts, I said the changes to the Klingons is not a radical change for them conceptually. They are just a more extreme version of the TNG era Klingons. Their mindset in more extreme, but its easy to see how they are same on conceptual level, so I don't think they are that different from the other Klingons we have seen before, so its not a radical change for them on a conceptual level.
Much of my family and friends would disagree with you. Different strokes and all that, I guess.
