News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

Star Trek actually "borrowed" that name from the US navy, just like the Federation was using the concept of the UN.

If Starfleet could be inspired by the US Navy to name a ship The Enterprise in Star Trek's universe, there's no reason why "Starfleet" in the Orville universe couldn't do the same.

While technically legal as long as the ship doesn't look like our Enterprise (saucer and nacelles), CBS would feel compelled to challenge the usage anyway to prevent the weakening of their trademark and thus reduce the risk of losing it in the future.

That was a remarkable improvement on the last episode and lot of damn fun. Plenty of great jokes ("Ensign Parker, go away now"), character development, and world building. I'm still a little worried what episode 3 will bring based on the reviews, but the show is already showing the kind of growth that I'd hope for.

I'm glad the show quickly delved into the inevitable set-up of Alara being placed in a position over her head, and while the arc was largely predictable, it was a lot of fun and much of that goes to Halston Sage's performance. She brought the right balance of vulnerability, nervousness, and intelligence to make the story believable. I also greatly approve of her solution to rescue Ed and Kelly from the zoo, as well as her sarcastic "Woof!"

As soon as we saw Ed and Kelly in Ed's quarters on Earth, not only did I figure it was a holodeck and not time travel, I immediately thought of Futurama's "Fry and Leela's Big Fling," where they were also lured into a zoo without their knowledge. I'm sure Futurama didn't come up with the idea (in fact, it sounds like the kind of thing The Twilight Zone would do), but it's still a great set-up. This is probably just me, but the zookeeper reminded me of Jeff on People of Earth, which added humor to the whole scenario.

Bortus laying and roosting an egg wasn't just a conceit to place Alara in command but was also a nice bit of character development. And I'm glad it won't be treated as a throwaway with the surprise development that he and his husband produced the first female in the race's history. I look forward to seeing more of that story.

And how can I forget Holland Taylor and Jeffrey Tambor as Ed's parents? What a crack pair they are! I hope we see plenty more of them because the chemistry was palpable between each other and with MacFarlane and Palicki.

One thing I'm liking is the use of pop culture references. Trek was always afraid of that.
I especially loved Ed's description of Kermit and how he got all choked up about it. The casual pop cultural references remind me of Farscape, although at least here some people get the references as oppose to everyone looking weird at Crichton. We still get the "huh?" reaction from people like Alara and Bortus, so it's the best of both worlds.

I guess the greyshirts are enlisted?
The enlisted always get the short end of the stick. :wah:

Kari Byron and Tory Belleci of Mythbusters and The White Rabbit Project fame appeared in tonight's episode.

Oh, nice! I had no idea that was them. Hopefully they get the chance to show up on Discovery, too, as different aliens. :D

Played effectively by Ron Canada, no less (Martin, Ch'Pok, Fesek).
I was amused he played a grumpy, insufferable admiral. A play on his own characters and Starfleet admirals.

Just a question..it goes without saying that there has to be a ship named Enterprise in the Orville Universe....So can they have it appear or be mention or does CBS/StarTrek own the rights to spaceships named Enterprise?
I seriously doubt it considering the Enterprise has a long history in naval tradition. In the Orville universe, the callback would be the same as Star Trek.

I'm surprised at how many people are referencing Twilight Zone's "People Are Alike All Over" more than "The Cage" or "The Menagerie". We all know that the human-in-zoo thing was an original idea by Roddenberry, even if Twilight Zone came first. And the references to the area being forbidden and Mercer throwing himself against the force field make it clear that MacFarlane knew what he was doing.

Next week, a bad batch of Xeleyan tequila kept in a freezer morphs into a substance that severely lowers inhibitions. Much swordplay and singing of Irish songs result.

So, The Orville's share and demo ratings held up pretty good in overnights. Comparing with the initial overnights from the premiere week

Adults 18-49 rating
week 1: 2.3
week 2: 2.6

Overall viewers (millions)
week 1: 7.3
week 2: 7.64

The premiere numbers were revised upward throughout last week. We'll see what happens. :)

Also, they're doing another "encore showing" Tuesday at 9 PM EDT.

Two episodes in a row now, the Orville incurs serious damage and next episode looks to be more of the same. The Orville sure gets beat up a lot. That is one tough little ship.

I thought the same, but I like that you're seeing damage from mishaps or misjudgments. This happened in TOS, too, but budget for effects couldn't allow it to be seen.

It isn't the Trek movie syndrome, where the ship gets destroyed every other time, thankfully.

Looks like it's following in the ultimate grand traditional conceit of science fiction tropes - the weekly magically regenerating starship.

Hell, Space Battleship Yamato's poor old third bridge got blown/scraped/melted off the keel every other episode!

So why the hell not, anyway? :)

My random thoughts from the episode:

They used a Star Trek red alert sound in the zoo! How has nobody mentioned that yet?!?

I really like how they confirmed they don't have a transporter. That bit of tech got a bit much to work around over the years.

Interesting how they have a holo-camoflauge device now. Hopefully it won't end up forgotten like all of the gadgets they discovered or created over the years on Trek.

The mess hall looks neat, but those chairs really look like cheap plastic. I hope they'll replace them at some point.

Windows in sick bay! Somebody actually thought the patients and/or doctors might actually want to look out a window!

Looked like they might have been going for a reconciliation between Ed and Grayson, but then they kicked that right out the window the next morning.

Also, for future episodes, could we create a separate thread please? This one is getting a bit overwhelming to sift through. We've done the same for other non-Trek shows.

Holding numbers just below the premiere, up against two big things on Sunday night, I think is really good! That was a good test that people waited out the delay on FOX and watched or tuned over to it from something else.

Actually, the overnights are a little higher than the overnights from last week.

The Emmys were considered a ratings disappointment, the latest in a downward audience trend for the show. So it may not have been big competition.
