Colin Trevorrow no longer directing Episode IX.

The butt hurt is rather strong tonight for some folks...

92% RT and $2 billion dollars in bank and people still get annoyed with you.

please don't tell me to "chill". I hate it when people try to dictate my responses.

What about if we offered a different room temperature?

I am just curious, for those of you who do not like this decision, what makes you think this movie or this decision were made for you? It made $2 billion at the box office. Rotten Tomatoes score of 92 critics and 89 audience. Metacritic score of 81. There is a new generation of Star Wars fans, largely though not entirely made by this movie. These movies are now for them, not for you. Of course Disney wanted Abrams back, it was literally the smartest and safest business decision they could possibly make.

Being disappointed with Abrams' viewpoint on Star Wars and the ways that said viewpoint directly influenced The Force Awakens' content, and therefore being disappointed and frustrated with the decision to hire him to co-write and direct Episode IX is not being "butthurt".

because...

I also think some people are really quick to get 'butthurt' over the people who are 'butthurt' about JJ's direction and vision for these types of movies. It's super easy to throw statistics and financial success, but those numbers aren't going to change the subjective view that his writing isn't always solid or that a lot of his passion for capturing the 'feeling' of something old has a tendency to overshadow creating something new or more coherent. I'm not mad that he's directing but I'm not insanely thrilled either.

Nothing at all. The franchise owes me nothing for my love for the last 40 years. You can't argue with $$$ in popular entertainment - it's there to be successful.

By the same token I make no excuse for truly hoping that it would be a movie that I love. Going by my dislike of much of his output so far, his appointment makes that much less likely. There was just so much in Force Awakens that undermined how good the three new young leads were, how fantastic the effects, cinematography, sets and costumes were.

Butt hurt is wailing JJ raped my childhood. All I'm saying is, I unreservedly loved both Star Trek and Star Wars and JJ has taken both and made films I don't like.

I wish he wouldn't.

Let's not forget that Abrams wasn't the sole writer of The Force Awakens: He shared writing duties with Lawrence Kasdan and Michael Arndt. Abrams was also not the executive producer, so he didn't have as much creative control as some people may give him credit for.

And I say this as someone who hates his Star Trek films.

I really liked both Star Trek '09 and Into Darkness, and wanted to like The Force Awakens; unfortunately, Abrams and Kasdan's combined viewpoints on Star Wars made for a film that was ultimately disapointing, and it's therefore harder to maintain optimism about Episode IX with TFA to use as a measuring stick.

I am also not a huge fan of his writing.

I too was under the impression the pretentious dialogue of BVS was all his doing but it wasn't

  • See, what we call God depends upon our tribe, Clark Joe, 'cause God is tribal; God takes sides! No man in the sky intervened when I was a boy to deliver me from daddy's fist and abominations. I figured out way back if God is all-powerful, He cannot be all-good. And if He is all-good, then He cannot be all-powerful. And neither can you.

Who talks like that?

Terrio didn't write BVS he script doctored it. That isn't the same as being the main writer of the film. Terrio was given a script and he tuned what they had given him the best he could in the amount of time he had. It wasn't his baby he was just the babysitter.

There are restaurants whose food I liked in the PAST. But they changed the menu or changed how they prepared the food I used to like. So I do not go there any more. I do not continue to go and eat food I no longer like just to complain and hassle the owners and costumers who do like the food. It's called being an adult and moving on.
Well, I wouldn't either but if it happens to come up in conversation with people like "hey, why don't you go to that restaurant?" I might give an honest opinion in the same way I might give the restaurant a review on Yelp or trip advisor.

Godsdamnit.

Wow, Abrams constantly delaying his movie's release dates really is an old running joke, but postponing the release date as soon as he's selected? This guy really has a problem with deadlines, doesn't he?

Although, another part of me is thinking maybe Han Solo should just get withheld until Christmas 2018 so we can at least maintain a holiday tradition. At this point, it's just going to be weird and out of place to have Solo released in the spring.

I don't care. That means squat to me. Right now, I am no longer looking forward to Episode 9. I haven't enjoyed a J.J. Abrams film since "SUPER 8", some six years ago. And even that film wasn't particularly original.

What's wrong with a December 2019 release? Episode 7 was December 2015 and Episode 8 will be December 2017. It makes sense to me that Episode 9 should be released in December 2019.
